Book Beethoven for a Later Age

Download or read book Beethoven for a Later Age written by Edward Dusinberre and published by . This book was released on 2016 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Using the history of the composition of Beethoven's string quartets as the backbone to his story, Edward Dusinberre - leader of the Takacs Quartet - recounts the life of the Quartet from its inception in Hungary, through emigration to the US and its present-day life of world renown. He also describes what it was like for him, as a young man fresh out of Julliard, to join the quartet as its (non-Hungarian) leader - a challenging task. Beethoven for a Later Age takes the reader inside the life of a quartet, vividly showing how four people make music together over a long period of time without becoming stale, or falling out. The key, the author argues, is in continual change and experiment - and these are at the heart of Beethoven's remarkable compositions for quartet.

Book The String Quartets of Beethoven

Download or read book The String Quartets of Beethoven written by William Kinderman and published by University of Illinois Press. This book was released on 2010-10-01 with total page 361 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "We do not understand music--it understands us." This aphorism by Theodor W. Adorno expresses the quandary and the fascination many listeners have felt in approaching Beethoven's late quartets. No group of compositions occupies a more central position in chamber music, yet the meaning of these works continues to stimulate debate. William Kinderman's The String Quartets of Beethoven stands as the most detailed and comprehensive exploration of the subject. It collects new work by leading international scholars who draw on a variety of historical sources and analytical approaches to offer fresh insights into the aesthetics of the quartets, probing expressive and structural features that have hitherto received little attention. This volume also includes an appendix with updated information on the chronology and sources of the quartets and a detailed bibliography.

Book Six String Quartets Op 16

Download or read book Six String Quartets Op 16 written by Emanuel Aloys Förster and published by A-R Editions, Inc.. This book was released on 2016-01-01 with total page 329 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Emanuel Aloys Förster (1748–1823) was among the most significant composers of Viennese chamber music at the turn of the nineteenth century. The three sets of six string quartets that he published are exemplary works in the genre at that time, fine examples of the intellectually and emotionally engaging nature of classical string quartets. Yet these works are not part of the standard chamber music repertoire, nor are they much discussed by musicologists, except in terms of the supposed “influence” between Förster and Beethoven. Thus our assessment of this important composer in general, and his contributions to Viennese string quartet culture around 1800 in particular, is hampered by a narrowness of vision. This new edition of Förster’s op. 16 (1798) shows that, like Haydn, Mozart, and Beethoven, he found the string quartet to be an ideal medium for trying out new compositional experiments, novelties that would appeal especially to the connoisseur. These innovations include rich and varied use of imitation in sonata form movements, songful unfolding in the slow movements, and humorous use of register and articulation in minuet and trio movements.

Various musical and pictorial illustrations and informative appendixes, including a chronology of the most significant works, complete this indispensable guide. Written for all string quartet enthusiasts, this Companion will enrich readers' understanding of the history of the genre, the context and significance of quartets as cultural phenomena, and the musical, technical and interpretative problems of chamber music performance. Book Haydn String Quartets Op 50

    Book Details:
  • Author : W. Dean Sutcliffe
  • Publisher : Cambridge University Press
  • Release : 1992-03-12
  • ISBN : 0521391032
  • Pages : 128 pages

Download or read book Haydn String Quartets Op 50 written by W. Dean Sutcliffe and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 1992-03-12 with total page 128 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Op. 50 string quartets contain some of the purest writing Haydn ever accomplished. In this first full account of these six quartets Dean Sutcliffe evaluates the Op. 50 in relation to Haydn's more frequently performed quartets and considers their relevance to the composer's wider output. A lucid and accessible discussion of the music emphasises the unity of each quartet: not only motivic unity, but unity also of texture, articulation, harmony and syntax. Each quartet is described in detail. The informative background provided by Dr Sutcliffe includes a brief history of the string quartet, and an assessment of Haydn's earlier works in this genre and of his role at Esterhaza. The description of the composition and publication of the Op. 50 quartets is based on the evidence of Haydn's surviving letters and the recently discovered autograph copies of Nos. 3 to 6 - a discovery which is vividly documented here for the first time.
