Book excerpt: It started with one night out with the boys. She was the hot diner waitress putting herself through school. I was the rich, arrogant player everyone misjudges. On paper we didn't match. Yet all it took was one day. One single day to change her mind. She wasn't planning to spend her day off with me.She wasn't supposed to fall for my charm. But one day, one smile, turned into several nights of her calling out my name. I'm not the guy she should end up with. I'm jealous, possessive. Not here for a long time - just a good time. She's changed me. But, for some reason, I feel her slipping through my fingers and no matter what I do, I fear I'm going to strike out with the one and only girl I've ever fallen for.

Praise for Strike Zone: *"Lupica skillfully addresses the timely and complicated topic of living as the child of undocumented immigrants and the uncertainty facing many American families....This exceptional baseball novel delivers both lively sports action and critical subject matter." --Kirkus Reviews (starred review) --"Lupica's action sequences are thrilling and fast-paced....[a] solid purchase where Mike Lupica and the Yankees are popular." --School Library Journal --"As he did in Heat, Lupica skillfully juggles the baseball drama with the larger social issues that swirl around it, vividly putting a human face on the immigration crisis." --Booklist --"Strike Zone brings the game of baseball to life, but moreover, it addresses immigration, a current issue in U.S. culture and politics. Teens will choose to read Strike Zone as a "sports book" but will root for Nick both on and off the field. Book excerpt: In his first novel, Tim Hassett-Salley introduces the reader to young Joe Davis who has coasted through his seemingly banal childhood as the younger brother of a loving family in a rural New England town in the early 1970's. A combination of bad choices, bad luck, and at times, a bad attitude conspire to crumble the cortex of his personality. Joe tumbles through his conflicted life seemingly oblivious to ample life lessons he could be learning. A lack of introspection throughout most of his life compounds Joe's relationship difficulties, neither healing his psyche enough to live a genuine life nor allowing him to move past the bad choices and traumatic events of his earlier years. Joe survives Vietnam, a few cycles of love lost and love found, organized religion, racism, and even the Catholic clergy sexual abuse scandal. He is focused on his future, but his past is ever present. Joe is in a race against time and fate, and time is running out.
