Book The Strength of the Mormon Position

Download or read book The Strength of the Mormon Position written by Orson Ferguson Whitney and published by Library of Alexandria. This book was released on 2020-09-28 with total page 222 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: History, tinged with tradition, affirms these to be the circumstances under which those words were uttered: The Savior had chosen Twelve Apostles, and had commissioned them to go into all the world and preach the Gospel to every creature. Obedient to the divine mandate, they had gone forth, and within fifty years had lifted the Gospel standard in every considerable city of the Roman Empire, which then had sway over the known world. One by one the Apostles had been taken: James was slain with the sword at Jerusalem; Peter was crucified, and Paul beheaded, at Rome; all had suffered martyrdom for the word of God and the testimony of Jesus—all save one, concerning whom Peter had inquired: "Lord, what shall this man do?" And the Savior, answering, had said: "If I will that he tarry till I come, what is that to thee?" (St. John 21:21-22.) Modern revelation confirms the ancient tradition that John, the beloved disciple, did not die, but obtained a promise from the Lord that he should remain upon earth, not subject to death, and bring souls to Him. He was to "prophesy before nations, kindreds, tongues and peoples", and continue till the Lord came in His glory. (Doctrine and Covenants, Section 7.) An attempt was made upon John's life, but it proved ineffectual. He was thrown into a cauldron of boiling oil, but escaped miraculously.

Book excerpt: This exquisitely produced volume presents the official LDS edition of the Book of Mormon in an attractive, accessible, readable version that brings to Latter-day Saints the helpful features that have been part of standard Bible publishing for decades: paragraphs, quotation marks, poetic stanzas, section headings, and superscripted verse numbers. The latest LDS scholarship is reflected in its brief, thoughtfully considered footnotes, although the focus is always on the text itself¿its wording, structure, and interconnections¿allowing the book¿s sacred message to be heard anew. The Maxwell Institute Study Edition, produced by believing scholars, is ideally suited to both new readers of the Book of Mormon and also those who know the book well and have loved its teachings and testimony of Christ for many years.

Book Lights and Shadows of Mormonism Classic Reprint

Download or read book Lights and Shadows of Mormonism Classic Reprint written by Josiah Francis Gibbs and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-01-11 with total page 542 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Lights and Shadows of Mormonism When the Revolutionary Fathers adopted the Constitution of the United States they believed that the safeguards which they had reared between the respective spheres of civil and religious activities would be ample for all time. The province of each of i those moral forces was so clearly and sharply defined that it was thought no serious clash could be possible. And the religious forces of those years were such that the Fathers were justified in their belief. Notwithstanding the safeguards which were thrown around the civil rights of the people, the Government of the United States is today confronted by a religio-political force which, if not sternly rebuked, rather than encouraged as it is, will become a problem Of such complexity and magnitude as will tax the wisdom and strength Of the Government to solve. Even now the conflict between the civil and religious forces has become acute in the States of Utah and Idaho. With stealthy persistence this thee-civil power is creeping over the States Of Wyoming, Nevada and Colorado, and is now the dominant poli tical force in the Territories of Arizona and New Mexico, which, in time, will be forced into the Union by that same ecclesiastical power which, by political intrigue, is compelling recognition in the Senate of the United States, and through that body is rapidly assuming a position Of power under the protection Of the Federal Government. The conflict in Utah and Idaho is the most unique and unequal struggle of modern times. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book Return to the City of Joseph

Download or read book Return to the City of Joseph written by Scott C. Esplin and published by University of Illinois Press. This book was released on 2018-11-15 with total page 248 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In the mid-twentieth century, the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints (LDS) returned to Nauvoo, Illinois, home to the thriving religious community led by Joseph Smith before his murder in 1844. The quiet farm town became a major Mormon heritage site visited annually by tens of thousands of people. Yet Nauvoo's dramatic restoration proved fraught with conflicts. Scott C. Esplin's social history looks at how Nauvoo's different groups have sparred over heritage and historical memory. The Latter-day Saint project brought it into conflict with the Community of Christ, the Midwestern branch of Mormonism that had kept a foothold in the town and a claim on its Smith-related sites. Non-Mormon locals, meanwhile, sought to maintain the historic place of ancestors who had settled in Nauvoo after the Latter-day Saints' departure. Examining the recent and present-day struggles to define the town, Esplin probes the values of the local groups while placing Nauvoo at the center of Mormonism's attempt to carve a role for itself within the greater narrative of American history.
