Book excerpt: When Organisations talk about leadership, they mark out a journey that is 10,000 steps long. Quiet Leadership is about the first three steps. It's an exploration of leadership in the smallest of things: our mindset, our words and our actions, in every single day. It's not about a grand aspiration, about formal objectives, or big development programmes. It's not about the formal power you have been given, your ability to influence at scale, or the varied ways you exert control. It's not about 'one' way of leading, but rather about a multitude of ways, and specifically about how you find 'your' way. Quiet Leadership is about the ways we are with each other in every moment, and how those varied 'ways' of being come together to give us the thing we call culture today. It's a practice that recognises that all cultures have edges, all communities have boundaries, and our impact is felt more in the shadows than in the light that we face. Quiet Leadership is a reflective practice, not to see the version of ourselves that we already know, but, rather, to discover ourselves in how others see us. Leadership in our reflection; leadership in our shadow. Leadership in our impact, through every action every day.

Book Finding Our Fire Enhancing Men s Connection to Heart Passion and Strength

Download or read book Finding Our Fire Enhancing Men s Connection to Heart Passion and Strength written by Martin Brossman and published by Lulu.com. This book was released on 2008 with total page 398 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "Finding Our Fire" opens a window into a world that most people do not know exists. The frank and fascinating conversation about what it means to be a man serves as a mirror for both sexes to see family history in a new light or take a more enlightened look at a current relationship. This book is a virtual tool kit for resolving issues from the past and installing insight for creating a compelling and passionate future. Because without freedom from our past and clarity about our future, it is difficult to connect to the passion and fire of our life--and without that fire connection, a man either gives up his dreams or feels he has to dominate and control his environment.

Book Changing Connectomes

    Book Details:
  • Author : Marcus Kaiser
  • Publisher : MIT Press
  • Release : 2020-09-08
  • ISBN : 0262044617
  • Pages : 271 pages

Download or read book Changing Connectomes written by Marcus Kaiser and published by MIT Press. This book was released on 2020-09-08 with total page 271 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: An up-to-date overview of the field of connectomics, introducing concepts and mechanisms underlying brain network change at different stages. The human brain undergoes massive changes during its development, from early childhood and the teenage years to adulthood and old age. Across a wide range of species, from C. elegans and fruit flies to mice, monkeys, and humans, information about brain connectivity (connectomes) at different stages is now becoming available. New approaches in network neuroscience can be used to analyze the topological, spatial, and dynamical organization of such connectomes. In Changing Connectomes, Marcus Kaiser provides an up-to-date overview of the field of connectomics and introduces concepts and mechanisms underlying brain network changes during evolution and development. Drawing on a range of results from experimental, clinical, and computational studies, Kaiser describes changes during healthy brain maturation and during brain network disorders (including such neurodevelopmental conditions as schizophrenia and depression), brain injury, and neurodegenerative disorders including dementia. He argues that brain stimulation is an area where understanding connectome development could help in assessing long-term effects of interventions. Changing Connectomes is a suitable starting point for researchers who are new to the field of connectomics, and also for researchers who are interested in the link between brain network organization and brain and cognitive development in health and disease. Matlab/Octave code examples available at the MIT Press website will allow computational neuroscience researchers to understand and extend the shown mechanisms of connectome development.

Book Learning and Memory

    Book Details:
  • Author : W. Scott Terry
  • Publisher : Routledge
  • Release : 2017-10-16
  • ISBN : 1317224051
  • Pages : 410 pages

Download or read book Learning and Memory written by W. Scott Terry and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2017-10-16 with total page 410 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This thoroughly updated edition provides a balanced review of the core methods and the latest research on animal learning and human memory. The relevance of basic principles is highlighted throughout via everyday examples to ignite student interest, along with more traditional examples from human and animal laboratory studies. Individual differences in age, gender, learning style, cultural background, or special abilities (such as the math gifted) are highlighted within each chapter to help students see how the principles may be generalized to other subject populations. The basic processes of learning – such as classical and instrumental conditioning and encoding and storage in long-term memory in addition to implicit memory, spatial learning, and remembering in the world outside the laboratory – are reviewed. The general rules of learning are described along with the exceptions, limitations, and best applications of these rules. The relationship between the fields of neuropsychology and learning and memory is stressed throughout. The relevance of this research to other disciplines is reflected in the tone of the writing and is demonstrated through a variety of examples from education, neuropsychology, rehabilitation, psychiatry, nursing and medicine, I/O and consumer psychology, and animal behavior. Each chapter begins with an outline and concludes with a detailed summary. A website for instructors and students accompanies the book. Updated throughout with new research findings and examples the new edition features: A streamlined presentation for today’s busy students. As in the past, the author supports each concept with a research example and real-life application, but the duplicate example or application now appears on the website so instructors can use the additional material to illustrate the concepts in class. Expanded coverage of neuroscience that reflects the current research of the field including aversive conditioning (Ch. 5) and animal working memory (Ch. 8). More examples of research on student learning that use the same variables discussed in the chapter, but applies them in a classroom or student’s study environment. This includes research that applies encoding techniques to student learning, for example: studying: recommendations from experts (Ch. 1); the benefits of testing (Ch. 9); and Joshua Foer’s Moonwalking with Einstein, on his quest to become a memory expert (Ch. 6). More coverage of unconscious learning and knowledge (Ch. 11). Increased coverage of reinforcement and addiction (Ch. 4), causal and language learning (Ch. 6), working memory (WM) and the effects of training on WM, and the comparative evolution of WM in different species (Ch. 8), and genetics and learning (Ch. 12).
