Further eastward, near the Palace Gateway, is the Chantry House of Nicholas Lord Cantilupe, founded for a college of priests. Formerly there were twenty of these Chantry foundations attached to the Cathedral, each having endowments of lands, or revenues, for the maintenance of one or more priests, to say mass for the souls of the founder and his relations and benefactors sometimes at a particular altar, and oftentimes in little chapels, added to Cathedrals or Parochial Churches. THE PALACE RUIN. This once noble structure, and now interesting ruin, claims peculiar interest as the ancient episcopal residence. The shell of p the magnificent hall was commenced by Hugh the Burgundian, and completed by Hugh de Wells, who built its famous kitchen. When entire, the roof of this great hall was supported by two rows of purbeck marble pillars, portions of the pilasters and corbels still remaining. The windows, grand entrance, &c., were equally superb with the other portions of this sumptuous apartment. The tower on the west side of the carriage-way was erected by Bishop Alnwick; and at the north-west corner yet remains the fine spiral staircase which led to the upper apartments: the roofs have long since fallen in; and those gorgeous apartments where the princely prelates of ancient times dwelt, surrounded with all the magnificence and luxury that the rich revenues derived from thirty-two manors could command, have long become the abode of the owl and the bat: where purple-robed dignitaries entertained the early monarchs in a manner so magnificent and profuse, that the most gorgeous pictures of imagination can scarcely exaggerate the reality--the tables groaning beneath massive services of pure gold, and knights...
