Female StoryTellers was born. Five years later, we're still going strong! To honor FST!'s fifth anniversary, we have compiled this anthology, featuring some of the funniest, most memorable, and thought-provoking stories that FST!ers have brought to our stage so far. We're thrilled to share their unique, fierce, and personal brilliance with the world beyond Tucson. We hope you find your inspiration and your voice within. Welcome to the FST!erhood!

Book The Storyteller Essays

Download or read book The Storyteller Essays written by Walter Benjamin and published by New York Review of Books. This book was released on 2019-07-23 with total page 129 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A new translation of philosopher Walter Benjamin's work as it pertains to his famous essay, "The Storyteller," this collection includes short stories, book reviews, parables, and as a selection of writings by other authors who had an influence on Benjamin's work. “The Storyteller” is one of Walter Benjamin’s most important essays, a beautiful and suggestive meditation on the relation between narrative form, social life, and individual existence—and the product of at least a decade’s work. What might be called the story of The Storyteller Essays starts in 1926, with a piece Benjamin wrote about the German romantic Johann Peter Hebel. It continues in a series of short essays, book reviews, short stories, parables, and even radio shows for children. This collection brings them all together to give readers a new appreciation of how Benjamin’s thinking changed and ripened over time, while including several key readings of his own—texts by his contemporaries Ernst Bloch and Georg Lukács; by Paul Valéry; and by Herodotus and Montaigne. Finally, to bring things around, there are three short stories by “the incomparable Hebel” with whom the whole intellectual adventure began.

"A beautiful book about family, memories, and the power of stories." —BuzzFeed "Mystical, masterful storytelling." —Ms. Magazine A gorgeously written family saga about a Puerto Rican woman who finds herself gifted (or cursed?) with a strange ability. There was always an old woman dying in the back room of her family's house when Isla was a child... Isla Larsen Sanchez's life begins to unravel when her father passes away. Instead of being comforted at home in New Jersey, her mother starts leaving her in Puerto Rico with her grandmother and great-aunt each summer like a piece of forgotten luggage. When Isla turns eighteen, her grandmother, a great storyteller, dies. It is then that Isla discovers she has a gift passed down through her family's cuentistas. The tales of dead family storytellers are brought back to life, replaying themselves over and over in front of her. At first, Isla is enchanted by this connection to the Sanchez cuentistas. But when Isla has a vision of an old murder mystery, she realizes that if she can't solve it to make the loop end, these seemingly harmless stories could cost Isla her life. Book excerpt: The #1 New York Times Bestseller * Named one of Variety's Best Music Books of 2021 * Included in Audible's Best of The Year list * A Business Insider Best Memoirs of 2021 * One of NME's Best Music Books of 2021 So, I've written a book. Having entertained the idea for years, and even offered a few questionable opportunities ("It's a piece of cake! Just do 4 hours of interviews, find someone else to write it, put your face on the cover, and voila!") I have decided to write these stories just as I have always done, in my own hand. The joy that I have felt from chronicling these tales is not unlike listening back to a song that I've recorded and can't wait to share with the world, or reading a primitive journal entry from a stained notebook, or even hearing my voice bounce between the Kiss posters on my wall as a child. This certainly doesn't mean that I'm quitting my day job, but it does give me a place to shed a little light on what it's like to be a kid from Springfield, Virginia, walking through life while living out the crazy dreams I had as young musician. From hitting the road with Scream at 18 years old, to my time in Nirvana and the Foo Fighters, jamming with Iggy Pop or playing at the Academy Awards or dancing with AC/DC and the Preservation Hall Jazz Band, drumming for Tom Petty or meeting Sir Paul McCartney at Royal Albert Hall, bedtime stories with Joan Jett or a chance meeting with Little Richard, to flying halfway around the world for one epic night with my daughters…the list goes on. I look forward to focusing the lens through which I see these memories a little sharper for you with much excitement.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: An anthology amplifying the voices of the figures reshaping art histories across disciplines and a range of fluid practices. With a focus on gender, race (including whiteness), class, sexuality, and transnationality--all of which are often marginalized in dominant art histories--each individual has provided short, often personal contributions detailing how they become passionate about their practice. The contributors' offerings are varied and surprising, appealing equally to people enmeshed in the field through their work as well as those with a beginner's interest. Their pieces take various forms--epistolary, children's fable, interview, coauthored narrative, pastiche, memoir, manifesto, and apology--and a number of the essays perform in their structure or content the theories they explore about publishing, curating, and archival work.
