Book excerpt: ISSN: 2397-9607 Issue 410 In this 410th issue of the Baba Indaba’s Children's Stories series, Baba Indaba narrates the Brazilian Fairy Tale "THE STORY OF THE YARA”. The Brazilian Yara, also called a water-witch, is said to lure young men by her marvellous singing, much as the mermaids on the Rhine’s Lorelei Rock would lure sailors to run their barges aground with their singing. After seeing her, the youth would become melancholy and would haunt the river day and night where he had first beheld her. His friends and people would remonstrate with and warn him of the enchantress "whose smile is the smile of death", but the youth, be he chief or tribesman would not listen and he would go to the river. There the beautiful being would appear and as he rushed to embrace her the waters would divide, and the two would disappear, never to be seen again." In this story, the young lover Alonzo struggles to heed the warnings of his beloved fiancée, Julia, and stay away from the river where he encountered the Yara. The fact that he has seen the Yara causes him to act differently, to even laugh differently, and despite his intentions to listen to Julia, he is tempted back to the river. Julia, not at all happy with this situation decides to take action…….. What happened next you ask? Does true love conquer all? Well, to find the answers to this and other questions you may have, you will have to download and read this story to find out? This is a delightful story. Enjoy! Book excerpt: Brazil, the largest South American nation and the land of Football, golden beaches and the Amazon is a thriving centre of propagating universal lessons to children and the young at heart alike, via a varied set of stories and fables that have survived as legends among the lore-loving populace since time immemorial. The sincere efforts of Elsie Spicer Eells to communicate these stories to the English speaking world by retaining the coffee-induced flavour of the originals has been lauded throughout the previous century as well as at present. Bringing yet another realm of life to the stories are the superlative illustrations by Helen M. Barton, which are instrumental in creating the magical world of Brazilian folklore.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Once upon a time, in a fishing village along the Amazon, there lived two sisters struggling to find their "happily ever after." Helena is dreading her sister Belmira's wedding. The groom, Duarte, should have been hers. And she knows that her sister only wants to escape their sleepy Brazilian town for an exciting new life in the city. But three days before the wedding, fishermen pull a mysterious stranger out of the river - a man with no past who offers both sisters an alluring, possibly dangerous future. Brazilian folklore and lyric storytelling blend into a heartrending tale of true love, regret, transformation, and the struggle to stay true to your family while staying true to yourself. "An incredibly original and affecting night at the theater... nuanced and well-crafted, and peppered with poetic lyricism." - Houston Press "A haunting and beautifully constructed theatrical experience... A work of striking originality... Orta has a wonderful ear for dialogue, and paints complex characters that we care about, and has come up with a modern fable set deep in the heart of the Amazon." - The Siskiyou Daily News "A bittersweet dream of love... It's a simple tale, well told, that invites the viewer to ponder the mysteries of romance. Are there such things as true love, as soulmates, as fate? And where does human choice fit into the equation?" - - AZ Central "A story of folklore, love, resentment and regret... as delightfully entertaining as it fascinating." - Latin Life Denver

Book excerpt: It is late afternoon in my Brazilian garden. The dazzling blue of sea and sky which characterises a tropical noonday has become subdued and already roseate tints are beginning to prepare the glory of the sunset hour. A lizard crawls lazily up the whitewashed wall. The song of the sabie, that wonderful Brazilian thrush, sounds from the royal palm tree. The air is heavy with the perfume of the orange blossom. There is no long twilight in the tropics. Night will leap down suddenly upon my Brazilian garden from out of the glory of the sunset sky.

Book Rejected Princesses

Book excerpt: Blending the iconoclastic feminism of The Notorious RBG and the confident irreverence of Go the F**ck to Sleep, a brazen and empowering illustrated collection that celebrates inspirational badass women throughout history, based on the popular Tumblr blog. Well-behaved women seldom make history. Good thing these women are far from well behaved . . . Illustrated in a contemporary animation style, Rejected Princesses turns the ubiquitous "pretty pink princess" stereotype portrayed in movies, and on endless toys, books, and tutus on its head, paying homage instead to an awesome collection of strong, fierce, and yes, sometimes weird, women: warrior queens, soldiers, villains, spies, revolutionaries, and more who refused to behave and meekly accept their place. An entertaining mix of biography, imagery, and humor written in a fresh, young, and riotous voice, this thoroughly researched exploration salutes these awesome women drawn from both historical and fantastical realms, including real life, literature, mythology, and folklore. Each profile features an eye-catching image of both heroic and villainous women in command from across history and around the world, from a princess-cum-pirate in fifth century Denmark, to a rebel preacher in 1630s Boston, to a bloodthirsty Hungarian countess, and a former prostitute who commanded a fleet of more than 70,000 men on China’s seas.
