Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Stories of the Pilgrims A desire to know more of a story than these lessons gave, was another valuable result. For this desire on the part of the children to see a story in its natural setting, and to know what came before and what followed after, showed that they had reached the period which is a happy time for laying a strong foundation upon which to build later work; a. Time in which the awakened interest in people and events should be used to establish a firm basis for future reading and study in both biography and history. The Pilgrim Stories as originally written were read in a number of schools with the same satisfactory results. Now, carefully revised and graded in vocabulary, they are offered in book form with the hope that other pupils and teachers may use them with equal benefit and pleasure. Download or read book The Pilgrims and Their History Classic Reprint written by Roland G. Usher and published by . This book was released on 2015-07-11 with total page 348 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Pilgrims and Their History I have attempted a new study Pilgrims and their history from the sources. While I was unable to find much new evidence of prime importance, I have perhaps been able to exclude from further consideration the possibility of ascertaining information about the Pilgrims from the evidence concerning the Puritan Movement in England from 1580 to 1610, and from that regarding the history of the Established Church for the same period. But I have been able to place the older material about the Pilgrims in its relation to the more recent evidence concerning English church history, and have as well utilized for the first time the Plymouth First Church records and many Plymouth wills, which contain much of great value on economic and social history. No further accession of evidence is now probable and it is therefore an important fact, though due to no merit of mine, that the narrative presented in these pages possesses a certain aspect of finality. A new study of old evidence and the use of some new material has made possible certain differences in interpretation, in emphasis, and in judgment, the importance of which must not be unduly exaggerated. I have felt it possible to show that the Pilgrims were not subject to active persecution in England from Church or State; that Robinson's Congregation at Leyden was considerably smaller than most students have estimated; and that the really significant achievement was not the emigration itself, but the economic success of the years 1621 to 1627. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Mary of Plymouth: A Story of the Pilgrim Settlement The purpose of this series of stories is to show the children, and even those who have already taken up the study of history, the home life of the colonists with whom they meet in their books. To this end every effort has been made to avoid anything savor ing of romance, and to deal only with facts, so far as that is possible, while describing the daily life of those people who conquered the Wilderness whether for conscience sake or for gain. That the stories may appeal more directly to the children, they are told from the viewpoint of a child, and purport to have been related by a child. Should any criticism be made regarding the seeming neglect to mention important historical facts, the answer would be that these books are not Sent out as histories, - although it is believed that they will awaken a desire to learn more of the building of the nation, and only such incidents as would be particularly noted by a child are used. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Young People's History of the Pilgrims One of many correspondents complains that "the trouble with Americans seems to be that they consider that the Pilgrims are a unique creation of their own and that they had 'cornered' the market of the world on them - like the American Indians. It is somewhat hard for them to realize that these Puritans were bonafide, every-day Englishmen." Too true! I have tried to avoid this Yankee tendency, to sketch rather the historical backgrounds, to remember the meanings of words as used in former days, and, in picturing the past, to unshackle our minds from the present. The contents of this work were collected by my father, the late Dr. Henry M. Dexter. To this task he devoted much of his time for many years. Of Pilgrim descent and born almost within sight of Plymouth Rock, he desired to give to the world a more complete record than any which had been written of the religious and ecclesiastical movement in England that made the Pilgrims what they were, and of their emigration to Holland and their life there before they came to America. But he died in 1890, leaving his chosen task unaccomplished. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Pilgrims: A Story of Massachusetts This volume is designed to cover the history of New England, in the form of a story, from 1620 to 1644, the period at which the New England colonies formed their first confederation for mutual protection. Mathew Stevens, a youth born at St. Augustine of Spanish and French parents, had been abducted and carried to England, in the year 1586, by Sir Francis Drake, and was there pur chased by Mr. John Robinson, who had compas sion on the child, and brought him up in the fear of the Lord. Thus Mathew Stevens (mattheo Estevan), though born of a Catholic father, became an English Puritan. By transferring the Estevan family from Florida to England, they are changed from Spanish to English, without breaking the lineal descent from the first youth who sailed with Columbus to Mathew Stevens the young Puritan. His romantic adventures and singular love affair form the chief groundwork for this story. In order that the reader may have a better idea of the Pilgrims and their peculiar persecutions, the story Opens with their flight into Holland. Just a glimpse of their life in Leyden is given, and they are hastened on board the Mayflower, where will be found as full and accurate an account of their memorable voyage as can be given without weary ing one with useless detail. Though the Pilgrims and the colony of. Massachusetts form the main features of the story, it embraces the history of North America from the time at which the novel Pocahontas left off, to the year when the col onies of New England were united. Book excerpt: Excerpt from In the Days of the Pilgrim Fathers Just as there is great confusion between Pilgrims and Puritans, so it is far from clear to most Ameri cans that, for more than sixty years, that is from 1628 to 1691 when the Colony at Plymouth and that centering about Salem, Charlestown, and Boston, were merged' under one Constitution what we now call Massachusetts, consisted of two distinct colonies, two centers of life and influence, which, though separated geographically by only forty miles, were in every other respect very far apart. This book was released on 2018-03-20 with total page 324 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Story of the Canterbury Pilgrims The chief season for pilgrimages was Spring, when the sweet showers of April had put to flight the dryness and cold weather of March. At that time of the year the west wind with his sweet breath is giving new life to all the plants and flowers. The young sun has just left the sign of the Ram in the heavenly Zodiac, and the little birds are beginning to sing again, and to sleep all night with one eye open. Men, too, like the flowers and birds, feel new strength in their veins, and early spring in those far-off days, five centuries and more ago, seemed to bid them leave their homes and use their fresh vigor in a journey to some distant place, to renew their vows and repent of their sins.
