Book The Story of the Otago Church and Settlement Classic Reprint

Download or read book The Story of the Otago Church and Settlement Classic Reprint written by C. Stuart Ross and published by . This book was released on 2015-07-12 with total page 466 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Story of the Otago Church and Settlement The following pages make no pretensions to deal exhaustively with the subjects of which they treat. They are offered merely as a contribution towards a fuller knowledge than now obtains, of the planting and progress of the first and only Free Church colony in the world. To myself it has been a pleasant and congenial task to look back across the years that have passed over us since the first adventurous bands of pioneers set foot on Otago, and to watch the social convulsions which supervened upon the discovery of gold; to mark the organization and the rapid growth of the churches, which arc now so marvellously multiplied in the land; and to note the more important public events which awakened a general interest, and affected, more or less remotely, the social and religious life of the people. All the accessible literature on Otago has been read, and put, to some extent, under contribution. I have used just so much of it as I believed to be suitable for the purpose which I had in view. I have to acknowledge my indebtedness to the early files of the daily and weekly papers of Dunedin and Southland; especially am I under obligation to the Otago Colonist, the Otago Daily Times, The Evangelist, and the New Zealand Presbyterian, for information which has been largely used in the following pages. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Education and Educationists in Otago This Volume is complementary to The Story of the Otago Church and Settlement which was recently issued from the Press, and is designed to give some information regarding the far-reaching and enlightened views of the Founders of Otago, and the wise and patriotic efforts which they made to promoto the educational interests of tho people. It traces the growth and gradual expansion of the Common School System, and of the leading educational Institutions and Agencies which have been in active operation within the province from the period of its settlement, in 1848, until the present year; and it touches briefly on the services renderod to the Cause by those who have stood in the van of the movement, and have stamped, in some measure, their own personality upon it. For kind help rendered to mo in this undertaking I make grateful acknowledgment of my indebtedness to the Hon. George MacLean; Dr. John Hislop, of Dunedin; Dr. James Copland, of Gore; Rev. A. H. Stobo, of Invercargill; P. G. Pryde, Esq., Secretary of the Otago Education Board; and all other friends who have courteously replied to my inquiries, and furnished me with useful information on the subjects treated in the following pages. Download or read book Tahiti Nui written by Colin W. Newbury and published by University of Hawaii Press. This book was released on 2019-03-31 with total page 384 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Tahiti Nui is an account of the survival of a Polynesian society in the face of successive settlements of missionaries, traders, and administrators. Beginning with the first explorers and Captain Cook's scientific observations at Point Venus, Dr. Newbury has separated the various strands interwoven in the fabric of Tahitian society, tracing their development and showing how they interacted at successive stages. Missionaries and foreign traders, administrators and Polynesians, planters and immigrant Chinese have all contributed to the distinctive flavor of French Polynesia, with Tahiti and Tahitians becoming increasingly dominant, not just as the focus of the French administration in Pape'ete, but in the social networks and trading patterns that have evolved.
