This book was released on 2018-02-05 with total page 208 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Story of the Earth's Atmosphere I have desired in the present little work to put forward the main features of our knowledge of the conditions which prevail in our atmosphere as they are interpreted through the science of to day. The Atmosphere, unlike its solid partner, contains no gold or coal mines with which to stimulate scientific research. Its study has con sequently been somewhat neglected until of late years, and is even now only just emerging from the stage of myth and speculation into that of fact and certainty. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Mechanics of the Earth's Atmosphere: A Collection of Translations In general it was concluded that air and water alike swerve in curved paths in front of such obstacles and flow towards the free openings. In the latter and directly adjoining the outer ends of the obstacle the strongest current is formed which here retains its direction unaltered, therefore free from all variations. The deviation in front of the obstacle does not take place at any definite distance from it, but rather extends up to the. Obstacle itself and even when the plate faces the current it is seen that a feeble motion still exists immediately adjoining it. Download or read book The Story of the Earth Classic Reprint written by Carleton W. Washburne and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-02-07 with total page 124 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Story of the Earth The science of our schools is, in a word, quantitative. That is, it concerns itself with exact measurements, accurate data, rigorous experiments, and demonstrations of laws which have to do with quantitative relationships. Hours are spent, for instance, in some of our high school laboratories, in the exact deter mination with a vernier caliper of the coefficient of expansion of aluminum. Such experiments are liable to be tedious, require much time, and thereby greatly limit the scope of the sciences taught. They are, moreover, entirely out of the reach of our elementary schools. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Atmosphere I may add that the task of editing has not been a light one; besides the necessity for compression and the consequent selection of the mat ter to be included, I have been obliged to exercise some sort of censor ship over the facts contained in the work. It is impossible for any one man to have a complete knowledge of so great a variety of subjects as are treated of by M. Flammarion, and the compiler of such a book must include many things taken from others, of the accuracy of which he is not fully competent to judge. In cases where a statement contained in the original work appeared to me clearly erroneous, I have corrected it. Book The Story of Earth and Sky Classic Reprint

Download or read book The Story of Earth and Sky Classic Reprint written by Carleton Washburne and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-02-16 with total page 430 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Story of Earth and Sky Studies of children's spontaneous questions show that beginning at about the age of nine and lasting at least until early adolescence, there is a keen interest in the origin of things, in the whys Of natural phenomena, and in the stars. Schools nowadays adjust their curricula to such interests, and try to give children that mental food and those activities which are suitable to their stage Of development. Hence the story of the earth - its probable origin, its evolution, and its place in the solar system - and the story of the imagination-stretching starry universe are becoming important parts Of the course Of study in elementary schools and junior high schools. This book was begun nearly twenty years ago in the science department of the San Francisco State Teachers College, where it was worked out with the children in the training school. Some of the geological stories were published, in 1916 in a little book called The Story of the Earth. Some of the star stories were published in a syndicated newspaper series, and were mimeographed for school use. Later, for over a decade, these early materials were used, with continuous revisions and additions, in the Winnetka public schools. Here the authors and their associates were able to watch the reactions Of the children, and note where their interests were abused, or where they lagged, which points were clear and which needed clarification. From these observations grew the preparation Of the present book, The Story of Earth and Sky. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book Air and Water Classic Reprint

Download or read book Air and Water Classic Reprint written by Vivian Byam Lewes and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-06-28 with total page 214 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Air and Water IN this little book I have attempted to bring before my readers the wonderful changes and actions which are going on around them in our atmosphere, and the even more marvellous work which water is performing in nature. A knowledge of the relations which exist between our health and the air we live m, and of the effects which water and its various impurities have upon our system, is so important, and has so wide a bearing upon the comfort and well-being of the human race, that this knowledge should form an important factor in our National Education. Unfortunately it is only of late years that the true import ance of natural science has been recognized, and it is Often found that amongst the well-educated classes but little is known of the subject, whilst in an ordinary commercial education the time devoted to science is small indeed. Book The Sun and the Phenomena of Its Atmosphere Classic Reprint

Download or read book The Sun and the Phenomena of Its Atmosphere Classic Reprint written by Charles Augustus Young and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-02-06 with total page 80 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Sun and the Phenomena of Its Atmosphere The following pages contain the substance of a lecture delivered at New Haven last January before the Yale Scientific Club. In its preparation for the press however considerable alteration and addition has been necessary, as the original delivery was mainly extemporaneous, and interspersed with numerous experimental illustrations, which cannot be reproduced in the printed form. It is of course impossible to include within such limits anything like a complete statement of our present knowledge concerning the sun: for this, one must have recourse to such works as Proc tor's Sun or Secchi's Le Soleil. The new German edition of the latter book, revised and edited by Dr. Schellen, is especially to be commended as a most complete and admirable exhibition of the present state of Solar Science, and it is greatly to be hoped that it may soon appear in an English dress. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Earth Science: A Physiography The introductory chapter gives a general idea of what has hap pened on the earth and what is going on now, so that the pupil is made aware of the aim of the entire subject. This is followed by a study of the materials of which the earth is made, rocks, and of the forces acting upon those materials. Having learned that much, the pupil is in a position to understand how these forces have modified the earth's surface and made it what it is today. The land is studied first, because pupils are more likely to know something about land, to begin with. It is for that reason they find land studies easier than the rest of the subject. This is followed by a short history of the earth, designed to teach the student how the earth came to its present condition. The chapter is optional, but the author feels that many of the better students will be eager to read it. The study of the land will probably occupy the first half of a year. The pupils who have successfully completed the first half will then study the earth's relations in space, seasons, latitude, longitude, time, the atmosphere and associated phenomena like weather and climate. And the year's work is brought to an end by the study of the sea with special emphasis on harbors. The text is printed in type of two sizes: larger type for the essential material and smaller for the Optional. Each chapter has a completion summary which the pupil is required to Copy and complete. This avoids the objection that many teachers have to the ordinary summary: that some pupils read only the summary. The completion summary acts as a self-test, for if the pupil is able to fill in the blanks, he knows that he has learned his lesson and this knowledge carries with it a sense of mastery and hence a feeling of satisfaction. At the end of each chapter are questions on every important point in the text and the teacher may well use these questions as a chief part of his assignment. There is also a set of optional questions which will challenge the best students to extend themselves. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books.
