Book excerpt: For the first time ever, author Gordon Cucullu gives readers an explosive inside look at modern military police units and their role in defending our freedom. America has been at war on several fronts since the 9/11 attack. While public attention has focused on Marines, conventional Army units, and Special Operations Forces, a lion's share of the war-fighting has been done, under media radar, by Military Police units. These squad and platoon-sized units patrol dangerous urban streets, build up local police units to improve neighborhood stability, and conduct civic action missions. On many occasions they have rushed into a vicious firefight to come to the assistance of infantry units in desperate straits. They keep villages Taliban-free, monitor balloting sites, and interdict drug shipments. In detention centers at Camp Bucha, Iraq, Bagram, Afghanistan, and Guantanamo, Cuba they guard some of the most dangerous terrorists in history. The story is told by the soldiers themselves, recounting what they have seen and experienced, along with historical context and first-hand field observations by the author team who were provided with unique inside access. Warrior Police takes readers into the bloody streets of Iraq, the dangerous back-country of Afghanistan, and wherever our Military Police are needed.

Book excerpt: Military Police contains a brief introductory historical essay and the lineage and honors for 109 Regular Army, Army Reserve, and Army National Guard military police units-commands, camps, centers, brigades, groups, and battalions, the echelons authorized distinctive heraldic items. Based on official records attesting to the history of the respective units, Robert K. Wright Jr. ably captures the organizational evolution of the Military Police Corps. Unit pride is critical for blending the Army's many specialized branches into the combined arms team needed to cope with today's contingency operations, and this volume contributes directly to the MP's esprit de corps. To his credit, Wright has provided an invaluable reference tool for anyone interested in the organizational history of the Military Police Corps.

It further honors military police everywhere who have served America in the honorable tradition of military service, exemplifying high levels of esprit de corps. It brings recognition to one of the oldest units in America¿s military history. More specifically, this book recognizes and pays tribute to a small group of men: the MP Platoon of the 2nd Infantry Division who fought in Europe in World War II. From ¿D-Day Plus 1¿ (the day after the initial wave of troops came ashore) at Omaha Beach, through the defeat of Hitler and Nazi Germany, to their final destination of Pilsen, Czechoslovakia, on May 7, 1945, and the conclusion of the war, this small group of men performed above and beyond their call of duty, earning the Meritorious Unit Service plaque for their contributions to the war effort. This MP unit had a large role in supporting and participating in combat operations and in the eventual defeat of a determined enemy.

Using official records and the personal accounts of battalion veterans of all ranks and ages, it takes you on a chronological tour from their first day in-country until their last. Learn of the history of the Vietnamese people, its military, civil police, and the ever-elusive enemy, the Allies, subordinate units, geography, and areas of operation. In South Vietnam, the tactical approach to war changed drastically with the new concept of the nonlinear battlefield. The Military Police took the initiative and through its speed and mobility, the tenacity and bravery of its troops, it quickly learned to adapt to the new style of counterinsurgency hit-and-run guerilla warfare by an always-elusive enemy. Follow their combat support missions, convoy escorts, discipline-law-and-order duties, and POW security and transport missions that made the 720th the workhorse go-to Battalion of the 89th MP Group in III and IV Corps Tactical Zones. A separate chapter is also dedicated to their dangerous and unique Operation OVERTAKE mission of day and night convoy escorts along Rocket Alley of Highway-1A between Long Binh and the Newport Docks. Book History of the 720th Military Police Battalion Book II

Download or read book History of the 720th Military Police Battalion Book II written by Thomas T. Watson and published by . This book was released on 2014-06-10 with total page 602 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The story of the three--year history of a traditional Army--level Military Police battalion assigned the previously unheard of mission responsibility of light infantry counterinsurgency warfare in South Vietnam. This was the first time in the history of the United States Armed Forces that a military police battalion was tasked with such a mission and placed in direct operation control of a Tactical Area Of Responsibility (TAOR) and authority for the direct control of infantry, air, armor, and artillery elements when called upon for support. At the time there was no precedent for it. Long Binh Post was the new home for the USARV Headquarters complex, and a dedicated proactive U.S. unit was needed to deny the enemy access to its traditional southern approach routes to Bien Hoa and eliminate their close-in strike capability of Long Binh Post and USARV. USARV tasked the mission to the 18th Military Police Brigade, and they assigned it to the 89th Military Police Group's go--to battalion, the 720th. Follow the exploits of the Battalion's Village Outpost's Liaison staff, River Patrol, Ambush & Reconnaissance, and Civic Action patrols as they first clear, pacify, and defend the four villages within the 22 square mile area within the III Corps Tactical Zone of Bien Hoa Province, South Vietnam. Their ability to quickly adapt and improvise to their new and unique infantry mission in the villages, jungles, and rice paddies, and on the roadways and back rivers of the TAOR showed that they not only fulfilled their primary security mission along the southern border of Long Binh Post, but also returned the area to the control of the local government and people. If you are a battalion veteran of the Vietnam era, it will finally provide you and the Military Police Corps with a clear and concise documentation of a history of service to be proud of.
