Book excerpt: In July 1976, a twenty-four-year-old white woman, Margo Olson, was found in a shallow grave in Stamford, Connecticut, with an arrow piercing through her heart. A few weeks later, Howie Carter, her black boyfriend, was killed by the police. Howie and Margo's interracial relationship held a distorted mirror to the author's own, with Howie's best friend, Joe. Joe's theory was that the police didn't have any evidence to arrest Howie; operating on the assumption that the black man is always guilty, they killed him instead. Margo's murder was never solved. Looking back at what might have happened in 1976, the author discovers a Bicentennial year steeped in recession, racism, and unrelenting violence. It was also a time of flourishing second-wave feminism, when young women were encouraged to do anything, if only they knew how. Stamford was in the midst of urban renewal, destroying historically black neighborhoods to create space for corporations escaping a bankrupt and dangerous New York City, just forty miles away. Organized crime followed the money, infiltrating Stamford at all levels. The author reveals how racism, misogyny, the economy, and corruption affected the young people's daily lives, and helped lead Margo and Howie to their deaths.

Book excerpt: If ever there was a year of destiny for the British Isles, 066 must have a strong claim. King Harold faced invasion not just from William and the Normans across the English Channel but from the Dane, King Harald Hadrada. Before he faced the Normans at Hastings in October he had fought and defeated the Danes at York and neighboring Stamford Bridge in September. What dramatic changes of fortune, heroic marches, assaults by land and sea took place that year! This book explains what really happened and why in what is arguably the 'best-known' but worst understood battle in British history.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from History of Stamford, Connecticut: From Its Settlement in 1641, to the Present Time, Including Darien, Which Was One of Its Parishes Until 1820 In doing so, I could wish its omissions and its faults were fewer: yet I am most of all content, that Whatever of either are noticed, were unavoidable. For one omission, ren dered necessary both by the size and the expense of the volume, and still more by the merits of the subject itself, demanding fuller and more careful treatment, I trust my readers will find the best possible compensation in the forthcoming stamford soldiers' memorial. Of its mechanical execution, the History will Speak for itself. For the few typograph ical errors here found, the considerate reader will surely find large amends in the general accuracy of the work; and both the author and his townsmen have just occasion for pride, that our local press has been able to send forth so large a volume, to which so few exceptions can be taken. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: When the Beatles emerged on the world scene, a generation of musicians followed. Across America, millions of them created the soundtrack to their generation. "The Boomers" is the truer-than-fiction story of one band - five young men from the Northeast and the memorable characters who shared their journey towards the top in the late 1970s. They played alongside legends. Emblematic of their generation- The Baby Boomers- they helped define their times through the shared experiences of millions in pop music. "The Boomers" - often graphic and tense, often funny and human, is filled with recollections and stories of hope, triumph and tragedy. Facing their mid-life crisis' thirty years later, three "survivors" of the 70s music scene decide to reunite, and write music about their lives. In doing so, they are unprepared for what they encounter: decades-long angst and resentments that haunt their relationships- and their music. This, alongside unresolved tragedies they faced, and differing views of their past and its failures, they are forced to consider the meaning in life's great disappointments Their reconciliations bring about a renewal- not only of their relationships, but at the unexpected and untimely death of a bandmate, the realization of the brevity of life and the finality it holds. "The Boomers" is a must-read for everyone that lived through history's greatest popular culture revolution, and the times that bind.
