Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Winner: Joseph Brant Award (2014), Ontario Historical Society Winner: Clio Prize (Ontario) (2014), Canadian Historical Association Winner: The James S. Donnelly Sr. Prize (2014), American Conference for Irish Studies Winner: Geographical Society of Ireland Book of the Year Award (2013-2015) In Between Raid and Rebellion, William Jenkins compares the lives and allegiances of Irish immigrants and their descendants in one American and one Canadian city between the era of the Fenian raids and the 1916 Easter Rising. Highlighting the significance of immigrants from Ulster to Toronto and from Munster to Buffalo, he distinguishes what it meant to be Irish in a loyal dominion within Britain’s empire and in a republic whose self-confidence knew no bounds. Jenkins pays close attention to the transformations that occurred within the Irish communities in these cities during this fifty-year period, from residential patterns to social mobility and political attitudes. Exploring their experiences in workplaces, homes, churches, and meeting halls, he argues that while various social, cultural, and political networks were crucial to the realization of Irish mobility and respectability in North America by the early twentieth century, place-related circumstances were linked to wider national loyalties and diasporic concerns. With the question of Irish Home Rule animating debates throughout the period, Toronto’s unionist sympathizers presented a marked contrast to Buffalo’s nationalist agitators. Although the Irish had acclimated to life in their new world cities, their sense of feeling Irish had not faded to the degree so often assumed. A groundbreaking comparative analysis, Between Raid and Rebellion draws upon perspectives from history and geography to enhance our understanding of the Irish experiences in these centres and the process by which immigrants settle into new urban environments.

Download or read book Modest Hopes written by Don Loucks and published by Dundurn. This book was released on 2021-09-14 with total page 406 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Celebrating Toronto’s built heritage of row houses, semis, and cottages and the people who lived in them. Despite their value as urban property, Toronto’s workers’ cottages are often characterized as being small, cramped, poorly built, and in need of modernization or even demolition. But for the workers and their families who originally lived in them from the 1820s to the 1920s, these houses were far from modest. Many had been driven off their ancestral farms or had left the crowded conditions of tenements in their home cities abroad. Once in Toronto, many lived in unsanitary conditions in makeshift shantytowns or cramped shared houses in downtown neighbourhoods such as The Ward. To then move to a self-contained cottage or rowhouse was the result of an unimaginably strong hope for the future and a commitment to family life. Through the stories of eight families who lived in these “Modest Hopes,” authors Don Loucks and Leslie Valpy bring an important but forgotten part of the Toronto narrative to life. They illuminate the development of Toronto’s working-class neighbourhoods, such as Leslieville, Corktown, and others, and explain the designs and architectural antecedents of these undervalued heritage properties.

Download or read book The Story of St Paul s Parish Toronto Classic Reprint written by E. Kelly and published by . This book was released on 2015-07-18 with total page 334 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Story of St. Paul's Parish Toronto On being asked by the Very Reverend Dean Hand to take up the compilation of the history of St. Paul's Parish, the undersigned made use of material gathered for years simply as a hobby. As some of this was the outcome of personal interviews with men of prominence who have since passed away, the information thus gained might otherwise have been lost forever. He also made use of other sources of information, a detailed list of which will be found at the end of this volume. When the end of Chapter XII. had been reached, sickness delayed the work for some time. On resuming his task, the writer found that part of Chapter XIII., all of Chapters XIV., XV., XVI., XVII., XIX., XX had been prepared, so that he can claim but editorship for this part of the work. A deep debt of gratitude is due the Very Rev. Dean Harris and Rev. M. J. Oliver, C. S. B., who read the proofs of the work; also of the clergy of the Cathedral of Kingston; of the parishes of St. Raphael and St. Andrews, in the diocese of Alexandria, and especially to the Very Rev. Geo. Corbett, V. G. That the work was not delayed indefinitely by reason of the illness of the writer is due to the indefatiguable labors of Mr. James O'Hagan, who, in addition to work of publication, had charge of the whole matter for more than two months. Book Governing Charities

Download or read book Governing Charities written by Paula Maurutto and published by McGill-Queen's Press - MQUP. This book was released on 2003 with total page 214 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Maurutto details how welfare bureaucracies, as they began to expand during the 1930s and 1940s, did so by building stronger links with private voluntary agencies, not by disabling them. Far from being shunted aside, voluntary organizations such as Catholic charities became increasingly entrenched within the expanding welfare state. Standardized reports, state inspections, financial audits, and social work case records, to name only a few, were emblematic of the social scientific impulse that permeated the operations of Catholic charities and enabled them to more systematically police, discipline, and regulate the lives of relief recipients and those designated as moral and social deviants. Notably, they allowed church authorities and the state to exercise greater control and supervision over the internal operations and procedures of charities, in effect enabling these institutions to govern the daily affairs of the voluntary sector.
