Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A History of the United States Navy IN preparing this volume the writer has been animated by a desire to tell, in one convenient volume, that might be sold at a moderate price, the whole story of our navy - to describe all the important naval battles, and to show how the nation has been affected at certain times by the work of its naval ships, and at other times by the want of such a force. All battles that have had any influence upon the wars in which the nation has been engaged, or upon the evolution of ships of war, or upon the character of our naval men, or of the nation, have been deemed important herein. Any con sideration of the facts shows that our sailors were animated, in most of their battles, by the knowledge that they were fighting for the very life of the nation, and it is therefore not too much to say that a description of such a fight must be a hero story, however told. Frankly, it was in the be lief that every history of our navy claims attention first of all as a hero story that this one was written. Captain Sloat, who preceded Stockton in command, had seized Monterey, taken possession of San Francisco Bay and the surrounding country, and garrisoned Sutter's Fort on the Sacramento River. When Stockton arrived all seaports, of which there are few on the California coast, were in control of the United States navy. His operations, therefore, were conducted inland, and his sailors fought far from the ships. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. This book was released on 2015-07-12 with total page 334 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Story of Our Navy From Colonial Days to the Present Time, Vol. 1 This volume is a history, told in popular, narrative form, of the United States Navy, from its beginning to May 1, 1916. Within its compass is not space for all the events, or even for the mention of all the figures in America's defence of her honors upon the seas. Rather does it aim to give a running narrative of the course of the development of the United States Navy, from its earliest beginnings to the present time, and to tell the story of the picturesque features of its early struggles and its later triumphs. The author desires to express his thanks to the Hon. Theodore Sutro for permission to use the copyrighted reproductions of certain paintings by the distinguished marine artist, Edward Moran. The fine examples represented in this book are chosen from thirteen paintings to typify thirteen chapters in the History of America on the Sea. Nothing is better adapted to educate and stimulate American interests upon the ocean than a careful study of the reproductions of these remarkable paintings. Book Our Navy and the Next War Classic Reprint

Download or read book Our Navy and the Next War Classic Reprint written by Robert Wilden Neeser and published by . This book was released on 2015-07-01 with total page 218 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Our Navy and the Next War If ever the navy of the United States needed the intelligent support of the American people, it is at the present moment. And it is fortunate that interest is now growing, and that a disposition on the part of our citizens to force action toward the meeting of the needs of the service is beginning to show itself. On one point there seems to be no difference of opinion - that if we are to have a navy at all, it should be as efficient as it possibly can be made. We have to-day individual ships that are the admiration of foreign naval architects. We have officers and men on board of them that we believe are the equal of those in any other service. We have certain materials of war that are as good as those manufactured for other fleets. But what we have not appreciated is that efficient individual ships and efficient crews do not alone make a powerful navy. These units must be welded into an efficient whole by an organization and administration which co-ordinate their capabilities and direct their efforts toward a common end. Book A Short History of the United States Navy Classic Reprint

Download or read book A Short History of the United States Navy Classic Reprint written by George R. Clark and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-10-11 with total page 542 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Short History of the United States Navy This history owed its origin to the need of a work suit able in scope and treatment as a text-book for the midship men of the United States Naval Academy. Since, in a tentative form, it has been used by them with gratifying results, there is hope that it may prove of interest and value to others whose time for this subject is limited. It has been written with certain definite aims, the principal of which are the following: First, to present a record of exactly what happened, without personal, sectional, or national prejudice. Second, to regard naval events from the professional rather than the picturesque point of view; for example, to emphasize the maneuvering and gunnery in an action rather than the smoke and blood. Third, to suppress the trivial and bring o'ut the important, not neglecting the services of officers in time of peace. Fourth, to give, whenever possible, the original sources, such as letters from secretaries of the navy, and official reports of officers. These official reports, we feel, are of singular value. The fighter writes as he shoots - straight to the mark. He may be prejudiced in favor of his own flag, but his account is usually more sportsmanlike than are the corresponding accounts of his countrymen who were not there to see, and has a unique interest that no rewriting ever attains. In the following pages will be found reports by both friends and foes. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. This book was released on 2018-04-24 with total page 446 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The History of Our Navy, Vol. 2 of 4: From Its Origin to the Present Day; 1775-1897 That more than two men would be SO im pressed without having a protest filed, to every one for whom such a protest was filed, is a matter of course. And what is the moderate conclusion drawn from these facts? It is that more than twenty thousand free American men were forced into the service of the British navy by the press-gangs. Their fate, save in a few cases, is unrecorded, but we know that some met the perils of the deep and were lost. Many were sent to the fever coasts of Africa and there died. Some were flogged to death at the order of officers who laughed at their tortures. And of the rest - the few - we Shall read farther on. For their cries to righteous heaven for help, and the wails of mothers and wives and children left helpless by these aggres sions, were to be heard at last. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Our Many-Sided Navy To my friends in the service I trust no apology is needed, except to express a most genuine sense of temerity in treading upon ground so full of pitfalls for the civilian. My only excuse is the ungrudging help, frank criticism, and encourage ment which I have constantly received from them both a oat and ashore. To them belongs the credit for whatever technical merits this work may possess; the errors are assuredly my own. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Navy as I Have Known It: 1849-1899 In speaking of half a century I am strictly correct, as I entered the Navy 8th May '49, and my last active appointment as commander-in-chief at Plymouth expired on June 1899, though I remained on the active list till 15th June 1901, when I attained the age of sixty five, and in accordance with the Orders in Council, I was placed on the retired list. I was accordingly over fifty two years on the active list. It was a great gratification to me to be able to celebrate my fiftieth anniversary of entry into the Navy while still on active service in high command, an experience which can naturally fall to the lot of few Naval, and of still fewer Military officers. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Naval History of the Civil War Since that era the Navy of the United States has been making history for the country on a scale almost bewildering, and could the Old pioneer captains of 1812 have been permitted to look on from their present abode (wherever that may be), we doubt not but that they would have been astonished at the large fleets we were putting afloat with such wonderful rapidity; and they would also have acknowledged that their descend ants had nobly borne themselves in the war for the salvation of this Union, which was as dear to our forefathers as it is to us at the present time.
