Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Story of "Old Hickory" Andrew Jackson IN 1765, two years after the French and Indian War had closed, a man named Andrew Jackson, with his good wife and two bright little boys named Hugh and Robert, came from the north of Ireland and settled in South Carolina. They landed at the port of Charleston and made a long journey through the wilderness, one hundred and sixty miles to the northwest. They came to a settlement, called the Wax haw Settlement, after a tribe of Indians of that name. Here Mr. Jackson made his home. He was not a rich man, but had means enough left to purchase a little farm, on which he built a little log-house and' began to clear away the forest. The family rejoiced to have a home of their own though it was a rude one. In his native country Mr. Jackson had been only a tenant. Book Old Hickory Andrew Jackson and the American People

Download or read book Old Hickory Andrew Jackson and the American People written by Albert Marrin and published by Penguin. This book was released on 2004-12-16 with total page 240 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: From a childhood steeped in poverty, violence, and patriotic pride, Andrew Jackson rose to the heights of celebrity and power. The first popularly elected president, he won admiration by fighting corruption, championing the common man, shaping the power of the executive office, and preserving the fragile union of the young United States. Yet Jackson's ruthless pursuit of what he believed to be "progress" left indelible stains on the nation's conscience: broken treaties and the Trail of Tears are among Old Hickory's darker legacies. Vivid detail and unflinching analysis characterize Albert Marrin's fascinating rendering of the adventurous life, painful complexity, and continuing controversy that define the Age of Jackson.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Andrew Jackson has the dubious honor of being the first President to have an assassination attempt made upon his life. Picture this: Sixty-three year old Andrew Jackson is walking across the Capitol Rotunda. Richard Lawrence, an unemployed house painter moves to the front of the crowd. He fires two pistol shots into the President. By luck, both pistols misfire. The aging Jackson charges the attempted assassin, beating him to the ground with his cane. Jackson was no stranger to death or weapons. In his lifetime he fought three duels, faced down the Creek Indians, and ultimately fought the final battle of the War of 1812 at New Orleans. Thomas Jefferson wrote: "I feel very much alarmed at the prospect of seeing General Jackson President. He is one of the most unfit men I know of for the place. He has had very little respect for laws or constitutions, and is, in fact, an able military chief. His passions are terrible. He has been much tried since I knew him, but he is a dangerous man." During the 1828 Presidential campaign Jackson's opponents took to calling him "jackass." Being the bad-ass he was Jackson liked the idea, and used it as his own for a while. Years later the donkey was adopted as the symbol of the Democratic Party. This short - 40 - page illustrated guide will tell you all you need to know to understand the Jacksonian Era in America... even if you know absolutely nothing about the South Carolina Nullifiers, the National Bank Crisis, or Indian Removal. In less than an hour, you'll learn all you need to know to impress your friends about Andrew Jackson, the Battle of New Orleans, the Creek and Seminole Indian Wars, and more...
