Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: With Moore County, author Richard Schloegl has created an enticing look back at the past of a region rich in local lore and tradition. Readers journey back to a fascinating time when the introduction of the railroad spurred great developments throughout the towns and virgin pine forests of Moore County. The coming of the Raleigh and Augusta Railroad in 1877 dramatically changed the face of virtually every community in the region. Small towns sprang up along its route to serve as shipping points for the expanding lumber and turpentine industries--trades that would energize and sustain the region for over two decades. When the forest resources began to show signs of exhaustion, the resort industry took hold. The timbered-over land was inexpensive and the communities of Jackson Springs, Southern Pines, Pinebluff, and Pinehurst quickly developed. These areas became health resorts, known for the medicinal qualities of their mineral water, fresh air, and gentle climate. The introduction of golf in 1897 changed the face of the region once again. Pinehurst was soon established as a golfing mecca of international renown, where names like Donald Ross, Glenna Collett, Francis Ouimet, and Harry Varden were forever etched into golf legend.

Book The Families of Northern Moore County Abstract of Miscellaneous and Rare Records

Download or read book The Families of Northern Moore County Abstract of Miscellaneous and Rare Records written by Morgan Jackson and published by . This book was released on 2019-11-05 with total page 622 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Moore County, NC has long been a challenging place to do genealogical research, even more so if your family lived in Northern Moore County. Due to the immense loss of records in the 1889 Moore County courthouse fire combined with Northern Moore's large mix of Scotch-Irish, German, Swiss, English and other settlers who often kept to themselves and left very little evidence behind - genealogical and historical research on these families generally leaves researchers with no shortage of dead ends, brick walls and ancestors who disappear into genealogical black holes. With this series, Morgan Jackson (www.MooreCountyWallaces.com) seeks to shine a light on these families and piece together the records that survived the fire and the test of time. Utilizing over thirty years of personal research and a multitude of information from numerous sources, he abstracts rare and hard to find land grants, deeds, church records, school records, wills, estates, tax lists, pension records, family bibles, newspaper accounts and court records. This second volume abstracts thousands of these records in a timeline format dating from 1831-1929 including several hundred images and hard to find maps. A full name index includes over 11,000 individuals and over 900 place names.

Book Aaron McDuffie Moore

Download or read book Aaron McDuffie Moore written by Blake Hill-Saya and published by UNC Press Books. This book was released on 2020-03-02 with total page 276 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Aaron McDuffie Moore (1863–1923) was born in rural Columbus County in eastern North Carolina at the close of the Civil War. Defying the odds stacked against an African American of this era, he pursued an education, alternating between work on the family farm and attending school. Moore originally dreamed of becoming an educator and attended notable teacher training schools in the state. But later, while at Shaw University, he followed another passion and entered Leonard Medical School. Dr. Moore graduated with honors in 1888 and became the first practicing African American physician in the city of Durham, North Carolina. He went on to establish the Durham Drug Company and the Durham Colored Library; spearhead and run Lincoln Hospital, the city's first secular, freestanding African American hospital; cofound North Carolina Mutual Life Insurance Company; help launch Rosenwald schools for African American children statewide; and foster the development of Durham's Hayti community. Dr. Moore was one-third of the mighty "Triumvirate" alongside John Merrick and C. C. Spaulding, credited with establishing Durham as the capital of the African American middle class in the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries and founding Durham's famed Black Wall Street. His legacy can still be seen on the city streets and country backroads today, and an examination of his life provides key insights into the history of Durham, the state, and the nation during Reconstruction and the beginning of the Jim Crow Era.
