Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: I shall write of a remarkable man, an interesting man, a man of power, of initiative, of will, of persistence; a man who plans vastly and who realizes his plans; a man who not only does things himself, but who, even more important than that, is the constant inspiration of others. I shall write of Russell H. Conwell. As a farmer's boy he was the leader of the boys of the rocky region that was his home; as a school-teacher he won devotion; as a newspaper correspondent he gained fame; as a soldier in the Civil War he rose to important rank; as a lawyer he developed a large practice; as an author he wrote books that reached a mighty total of sales. He left the law for the ministry and is the active head of a great church that he raised from nothingness. He is the most popular lecturer in the world and yearly speaks to many thousands. He is, so to speak, the discoverer of "Acres of Diamonds," through which thousands of men and women have [Pg 64]achieved success out of failure. He is the head of two hospitals, one of them founded by himself, that have cared for a host of patients, both the poor and the rich, irrespective of race or creed. He is the founder and head of a university that has already had tens of thousands of students. His home is in Philadelphia; but he is known in every corner of every state in the Union, and everywhere he has hosts of friends. All of his life he has helped and inspired others.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Acres of Diamonds by Russell Conwell - The original inspiration for "Acres of Diamonds", his most famous essay, occurred in 1869 when Conwell was traveling in the Middle East. The work began as a speech, "at first given," wrote Conwell in 1913, "before a reunion of my old comrades of the Forty-sixth Massachusetts Regiment, which served in the Civil War and in which I was captain." It was delivered as a lecture on the Chautauqua circuit prior to his becoming pastor of the Grace Baptist Church in Philadelphia in 1882 and was first published in book form in 1890 by the John Y. Huber Company of Philadelphia. Before his death in 1925, Conwell would deliver it over 6,152 times around the world. The central idea of the work is that one need not look elsewhere for opportunity, achievement, or fortune; the resources to achieve all good things are present in one's own community. This theme is developed by an introductory anecdote, credited by Conwell to an Arab guide, about a man who wanted to find diamonds so badly that he sold his property and went off in futile search for them. The new owner of his home discovered that a rich diamond mine was located right there on the property. Conwell elaborates on the theme through examples of success, genius, service, or other virtues involving ordinary Americans contemporary to his audience: "dig in your own backyard!" In A People's History of the United States, historian Howard Zinn comments that the message was that anyone could get rich if he tried hard enough, while implying that Conwell held elitist attitudes by quoting the following from his speech: I say that you ought to get rich, and it is your duty to get rich ... The men who get rich may be the most honest men you find in the community. Let me say here clearly ... ninety-eight out of one hundred of the rich men of America are honest. That is why they are rich. That is why they are trusted with money. That is why they carry on great enterprises and find plenty of people to work with them. It is because they are honest men. ... I sympathize with the poor, but the number of poor who are to be sympathized with is very small. To sympathize with a man whom God has punished for his sins ... is to do wrong. ...

Book excerpt: The question was, “What am I supposed to do in life?” The answer: “Be generous.” Think about the most successful people you know—those with wealth, power, and status. Are they happy? Are they enlightened? Are they fulfilled? Maybe . . . and maybe not. Sometimes, the glitz of a social media façade hides a lonely, unfilled, and unrewarding life. Chances are, the happiest, most grateful, and most graceful people you know are the ones who have prioritized more than simple “success.” Instead, these are the women and men who have chosen a different path—an others-first perspective that prioritizes giving over self-gratification and self-promotion. And not just generosity—WISEgenerosity. In this landmark work, Chris Gabriel presents the guidebook on generosity for the modern age. Forgoing outdated and superficial assumptions about vague, undirected, merely “feel-good” giving, Chris brings laser focus to generosity that is W.I.S.E.: Well-grounded Inspired Satisfying Effective Filled with practical instruction, uplifting stories, challenging self-examination exercises, and detailed models, WISEgenerosity cuts through the confusion surrounding why to give, how to give, what to give, when to give, and where to give. Then, it takes you by the hand and walks you down a thoughtful, proven path to a purposeful and productive life—your best life—with generosity that is meaningful and effective for both the giver and the receiver. This is WISEgenerosity.
