Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Charlie Mullins, a divorced executive at a large company, falls in love with a woman who he initially doesn't know could destroy his entire career. Charlie is convinced that she is his true soul mate and will not give her up even though it would mean the loss of his job and career if it became public knowledge. The company he works for has military defense contracts and he would not be given a security clearance once his relationship to Gina was known. He will have to choose between the woman and his career. While he faces this choice, a couple of busybody housewives from the small town in which he was raised and still lives have taken to stalking him because of his secret relationship and their interest in marrying him off to a local woman. They feel threatened by his behavior, and their response threatens his ability to keep the relationship secret while he devises a plan to marry the woman of his dreams. If the relationship becomes known before Charlie is ready and has worked out his plan, all will be lost. About the Author This is Jim Wygand's third book and his first novel. Jim is a business consultant who has worked in and with large corporations during his long and varied career. In his first novel, Jim has pitted parochial small town gossips against the desire for privacy of a native son and the inner workings and politics of a large multinational corporation. The admixture could prove disastrous to Charlie Mullins and his professional and personal plans.

Book Worthless Impossible and Stupid

Download or read book Worthless Impossible and Stupid written by Daniel and published by Harvard Business Press. This book was released on 2013-06-18 with total page 256 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Introducing the global mind-set changing the way we do business. In this fascinating book, global entrepreneurship expert Daniel Isenberg presents a completely novel way to approach business building—with the insights and lessons learned from a worldwide cast of entrepreneurial characters. Not bound by a western, Silicon Valley stereotype, this group of courageous and energetic doers has created a global and diverse mix of companies destined to become tomorrow’s leading organizations. Worthless, Impossible, and Stupid is about how enterprising individuals from around the world see hidden value in situations where others do not, use that perception to develop products and services that people initially don’t think they want, and ultimately go on to realize extraordinary value for themselves, their customers, and society as a whole. What these business builders have in common is a contrarian mind-set that allows them to create opportunities and succeed where others see nothing. Amazingly, this process repeats itself in one form or another countless times a day all over the world. From Albuquerque to Islamabad, you will travel with Isenberg to discover unusual yet practical insights that you can use in your own business. Meet the founders of Grameenphone in Bangladesh, PACIV in Puerto Rico, Sea to Table in New York, Actavis in Iceland, Studio Moderna in Slovenia, Hartwell Metals in Hong Kong and Southeast Asia, Given Imaging in Israel, WildChina in China, and many others. You’ll be moved by the stories of these plucky start-ups—many of them fueled by adversity and, more often than not, by necessity. Great stories, stunning successes, crushing failures—they’re all here. What can we, in the East and West, learn from them? What can you learn—and what will these entrepreneurial stories, so compellingly told, inspire you to do? Let this book open doors for you where you once saw only walls. If you’ve ever felt the urge to turn a glimmer of an idea into something extraordinary, these stories are for you.

Benji Cooper is one of the few Black students at an elite prep school in Manhattan. But every summer, Benji escapes to the Hamptons, to Sag Harbor, where a small community of Black professionals have built a world of their own. The summer of ’85 won’t be without its usual trials and tribulations, of course. There will be complicated new handshakes to fumble through and state-of-the-art profanity to master. Benji will be tested by contests big and small, by his misshapen haircut (which seems to have a will of its own), by the New Coke Tragedy, and by his secret Lite FM addiction. But maybe, just maybe, this summer might be one for the ages. Look for Colson Whitehead’s new novel, Crook Manifesto, coming soon!

Mullins leav[es] readers with an expansive, no-regrets appreciation of art and the human story."--Meghan Cox Gurdon, Wall Street Journal "A fresh take on art history as we know it."--Katy Hessel, The Great Women Artists Podcast Charlotte Mullins brings art to life through the stories of those who created it and, importantly, reframes who is included in the narrative to create a more diverse and exciting landscape of art. She shows how art can help us see the world differently and understand our place in it, how it helps us express ourselves, fuels our creativity and contributes to our overall wellbeing and positive mental health. Why did our ancestors make art? What did art mean to them and what does their art mean for us today? Why is art even important at all? Mullins introduces readers to the Terracotta Army and Nok sculptures, Renaissance artists such as Giotto and Michelangelo, trailblazers including Käthe Kollwitz, Pablo Picasso, Frida Kahlo, and contemporary artists who create art as resistance, such as Ai Weiwei and Shirin Neshat. She also restores forgotten artists such as Sofonisba Anguissola, Guan Daosheng and Jacob Lawrence, and travels to the Niger valley, Peru, Java, Rapa Nui and Australia, to broaden our understanding of what art is and should be. This extraordinary journey through 100,000 years celebrates art's crucial place in understanding our collective culture and history.

Book Lives of the Great Artists

Download or read book Lives of the Great Artists written by Charlie Ayres and published by Thames and Hudson. This book was released on 2008-10-14 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: An original and delightful approach: imagined visits to artists' studios bring art vividly to life for children. Through the pages of this book, young readers step into a famous artist's studio in medieval Germany, Renaissance Italy, or nineteenth-century France. As the making of a particular work is described, the child smells the paint, hears the chisel chipping into marble, or experiences the wonders of a working printing press. The twenty artists are featured in easy-to-follow chronological order: Giotto, Leonardo da Vinci, Albrecht Dürer, Michelangelo, Raphael, Titian, Hans Holbein the Younger, El Greco, Caravaggio, Artemisia Gentileschi, Bernini, Velázquez, Rembrandt, Goya, Jacques-Louis David, Turner, Delacroix, Manet, Monet, and van Gogh. All have remarkable life stories that will entrance any child. Beautifully produced illustrations include an introductory portrait or self-portrait of each artist, followed by reproductions of some of their greatest works. Both paintings and sculptures are represented, offering children an inspiring insight into the visual arts. The artworks—Michelangelo's colossal statue of David, van Gogh's self-portrait with bandaged ear, Velázquez's Las Meninas with little Infanta at center stage, Delacroix's dramatic Liberty Leading the People—have all been chosen specifically to appeal to a young audience. Extended picture captions offer further information, focusing on key details or telling memorable anecdotes, and the book includes a listing of where the artworks can be seen.
