Book The Story of an American Dedicated to the Memory of Theodore Roosevelt Classic Reprint

Download or read book The Story of an American Dedicated to the Memory of Theodore Roosevelt Classic Reprint written by Charles F. Clarke and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-01-31 with total page 410 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Story of an American, Dedicated to the Memory of Theodore Roosevelt In the leadership that we have had in America dur ing the past decade, I have considered the Roosevelt leadership as best adapted to the problem of carrying the race of men on and up. I have indeed considered it a very wonderful leadership and I think that by all means all of us who believed in it should attempt so far as possible, to carry that leadership or rather the things for which it stood, on and up. Such is the purpose of this story, or of this narrative and collection of essays combined, or whatever else it may be called. The story is without literary merit for the reason that it is a combination of narratives, essays and orations. It is the story told as a personal narrative of an old man who has lived considerably beyond the allotted three score and ten, and who has lived his entire life upon the American continent and who has learned to passionately love America and the things for which America stands. This book was released on 2019-02-02 with total page 404 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from American Boys Life of Theodore Roosevelt The life of Theodore Roosevelt is one well worth studying by any American boy who wishes to make something of himself and mount high on the ladder of success. The twenty-sixth President of our country is a fine type of the true American of to-day, full of vim and vigor, quick to comprehend, and equally quick to act, not afraid to defend his opinions against all comers when satisfied that he is in the right, independent, and yet not lacking in fine social qualities, physically and morally courageous, and with a faith in himself and his God that is bound to make for good so long as he clings to it. Theodore Roosevelt comes from countless generations of fighting stock, both in this country and abroad. And yet as a youth the future hero of San Juan Hill was a delicate lad, and many fears were entertained that he might not live to manhood. But life in the open air, with judicious athletic exercise, accomplished wonders, and he became strong and hardy to an astonishing degree. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Story of Theodore Roosevelt When one thinks of the kind of man that Americans want an American to be one naturally thinks of Theo dore Roosevelt. He was in so many ways an example of fine citizenship that he is held up to the youth of our land as a type of what they may well strive to be. And he won this place in the hearts of our people by hard work. He did not easily become a sturdy, active, strenuous leader of his fellows. His whole life was a struggle: first, a struggle to become physically fit, then a struggle to become mentally fit, and finally a struggle to become politically fit. Things did not come easily to young Roosevelt. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book Theodore Roosevelt s Ghost

Download or read book Theodore Roosevelt s Ghost written by Michael Patrick Cullinane and published by LSU Press. This book was released on 2017-12-11 with total page 303 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A century after his death, Theodore Roosevelt remains one of the most recognizable figures in U.S. history, with depictions of the president ranging from the brave commander of the Rough Riders to a trailblazing progressive politician and early environmentalist to little more than a caricature of grinning teeth hiding behind a mustache and pince-nez. Theodore Roosevelt’s Ghost follows the continuing shifts and changes in this president’s reputation since his unexpected passing in 1919. In the most comprehensive examination of Roosevelt’s legacy, Michael Patrick Cullinane explores the frequent refashioning of this American icon in popular memory. The immediate aftermath of Roosevelt’s death created a groundswell of mourning and goodwill that ensured his place among the great Americans of his generation, a stature bolstered by the charitable and political work of his surviving family. When Franklin Roosevelt ascended to the presidency, he worked to situate himself as the natural heir of Theodore Roosevelt, reshaping his distant cousin’s legacy to reflect New Deal values of progressivism, intervention, and patriotism. Others retroactively adapted Roosevelt’s actions and political record to fit the discourse of social movements from anticommunism to civil rights, with varying degrees of success. Richard Nixon’s frequent invocation led to a decline in Roosevelt’s popularity and a corresponding revival effort by scholars endeavoring to give an accurate, nuanced picture of the 26th president. This wide-ranging study reveals how successive generations shaped the public memory of Roosevelt through their depictions of him in memorials, political invocations, art, architecture, historical scholarship, literature, and popular culture. Cullinane emphasizes the historical contexts of public memory, exploring the means by which different communities worked to construct specific representations of Roosevelt, often adapting his legacy to suit the changing needs of the present. Theodore Roosevelt’s Ghost provides a compelling perspective on the last century of U.S. history as seen through the myriad interpretations of one of its most famous and indefatigable icons.

Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Tribute in Rhyme to Theodore Roosevelt The larger Americanism demands that we refuse to be sundered from one another along lines of class or creed or sectional or national origin; that we judge each American on his merits as a man; that we work for the well being of our bodily selves and also for the well being of our spiritual selves; that we consider safety, that we put honor and duty above safety. Only thus shall we stand erect before the world, high of heart, masters of our own souls, fit to be the fathers of a race of freemen who shall make and shall keep this land all that it seemed to the prophetic vision of the mighty men who founded and the mighty men who saved it. This book was released on 2015-07-01 with total page 544 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Theodore Roosevelt and His Time, Shown in His Own Letters, Vol. 1 Five years or more before his death Theodore Roosevelt said he wished me to write the history of the period which covered his public career. His reason was that I had been in his close confidence during the greater part of that period and knew the inside of ever movement nearly as well as he knew it himself. We talked often on the subject and in the early spring of 1918 the project took definite form. He turned over to me for exclusive use all his personal and official correspondence together with other material relating to his public career from the time he was elected to the New York Legislature in November, 1881, till his life ended. I began work at once, and at the time of his death I had completed the first draft of the story of his public life down to the year 1905, and had received his approval of it. At different stages of the work I went over with him what I had written and had the inestimable advantage of his suggestions, obtaining from him incidents and anecdotes which added immeasurably to the interest and historical value of the narrative, making it virtually his own. Between us we evolved a general plan for the history, which was to let the story of his career be told, as far as possible, in his own letters, utterances and acts. This was an arduous but not a difficult task to perform. It was arduous because the material was virtually inexhaustible, but it was not difficult because of the quality of Roosevelt's letters. One of his private secretaries has estimated that during his public career he wrote 150,000 letters. Copies of these have been preserved.
