Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Story of Algiers, Now Fifth District of New Orleans, 1718-1896: The Past and the Present These reminiscences of the past it has seemed to me a duty to record. An actor therein, circumstances afforded me exceptional advantages for a better rieu. I have, in many cases, been a witness to the first alleged, or have obtained them from reliable sources. The story extends from French Bienrille to American Claiburnes and thence to the present day. Commencing from the period when superstitution cast a weird reil of mystery over the great river which surrounds us, and Indian legends propled every nook of the section with fantastic creations of untutored fancy. Jesuit and Cavalier. Frenchman and Spaniard, Canadian and Yankee, natives of all climes, after this record, that it is so richly raried, so charming, so unique? History simply repeats itself - as sound mores in waves. I have confined my story, and not attempted, for fear of tiring the reader, to relate every incident of the past. It has been written after many a weary day, duties have ceased, when the residents of our busy district were in slumber. If the personal of these pages proves of interest to the reader, then they may I hope the story and other data have not been given in rain. Book The West Bank of Greater New Orleans

Download or read book The West Bank of Greater New Orleans written by Richard Campanella and published by LSU Press. This book was released on 2020-05-06 with total page 344 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Winner of the SESAH Book Award The West Bank has been a vital part of greater New Orleans since the city’s inception, serving as its breadbasket, foundry, shipbuilder, railroad terminal, train manufacturer, and even livestock hub. At one time it was the Gulf South’s St. Louis, boasting a diversified industrial sector as well as a riverine, mercantilist, and agricultural economy. Today the mostly suburban West Bank is proud but not pretentious, pleasant if not prominent, and a distinct, affordable alternative to the more famous neighborhoods of the East Bank. Richard Campanella is the first to examine the West Bank holistically, as a legitimate subregion with its own story to tell. No other part of greater New Orleans has more diverse yet deeply rooted populations: folks who speak in local accents, who exhibit longstanding cultural traits, and, in some cases, who maintain family ownership of lands held since antebellum times—even as immigrants settle here in growing numbers. Campanella demonstrates that West Bankers have had great agency in their own place-making, and he challenges the notion that their story is subsidiary to a more important narrative across the river. The West Bank of Greater New Orleans is not a traditional history, nor a cultural history, but rather a historical geography, a spatial explanation of how the West Bank’s landscape formed: its terrain, environment, land use, jurisdictions, waterways, industries, infrastructure, neighborhoods, and settlement patterns, past and present. The book explores the drivers, conditions, and power structures behind those landscape transformations, using custom maps, aerial images, photographic montages, and a detailed historical timeline to help tell that complex geographical story. As Campanella shows, there is no “greater New Orleans” without its cross-river component. The West Bank is an essential part of this remarkable metropolis.

Book Eyes of an Eagle

Download or read book Eyes of an Eagle written by Christopher Everette Cenac Sr. and published by Univ. Press of Mississippi. This book was released on 2011-08-12 with total page 305 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Selected Book for the Louisiana Bicentennial Celebration, 2012 In the year 1860, Jean-Pierre Cenac sailed from the sophisticated French city of Bordeaux to begin his new life in the city with the second busiest port of debarkation in the U.S. Two years before, he had descended the Pyrenees to Bordeaux from his home village of Barbazan-Debat, a terrain in direct contrast to the flatlands of Louisiana. He arrived in 1860, just when the U.S. Civil War began with the secession of the Southern states, and in New Orleans, just where there would be placed a prime military target as the war developed. Neither Creole nor Acadian, Pierre took his chances in the rural parish of Terrebonne on the coast of the Gulf of Mexico. Pierre's resolute nature, unflagging work ethic, steadfast determination, and farsighted vision earned him a place of respect he could never have imagined when he left his native country. How he forged his place in this new landscape echoes the life journeys of countless immigrants--yet remains uniquely his own. His story and his family's story exemplify the experiences of many nineteenth century immigrants to Louisiana and the experiences of their twentieth century descendants.

Book IDI Amin Hero Or Villain His Son Jaffar Amin and Other People Speak

Download or read book IDI Amin Hero Or Villain His Son Jaffar Amin and Other People Speak written by Jaffar Amin and published by . This book was released on 2010-04 with total page 590 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Idi Amin ruled the East African country of Uganda from January 1971 to April 1979 when he was ousted from power by a combined force of the Tanzania Peoples' Defence Force and Ugandan exiles operating through Tanzania. He left a controversial and conflicted legacy, as depicted by Oscar-winning film star Forest Whitaker in the hit movie "The Last King of Scotland"; but have authors and filmmakers who have attempted to tell his story to date really told the whole truth? Have they delved deep enough to uncover everything there is to know about Idi Amin, everything there is to tell about him and what actually happened during his rule and after he was forced to live in exile, first in Libya and then in Saudi Arabia? "No" says his son Jaffar Amin and other people! Was Idi Amin "Framed" or "Guilty as Charged"? Was something "insidious" going on during his rule in Uganda as alleged by many? What role did racism, colonialism, neocolonialism, classism, religion, tribalism and greed play in "creating" Idi Amin? In this unprecedented series devoted to telling Idi Amin's story in its entirety and not just "selected" parts, Margaret Akulia engages his son Jaffar Amin and other people in candid "conversation" about his legacy. As the world continues to pronounce "A Guilty Verdict" on Idi Amin after "finding him guilty beyond reasonable doubt," many people are adamant in asserting that "others" and not Idi Amin committed the "mass murders" attributed to him in Uganda which begs the question: Was Idi Amin a Hero or a Villain? This is a series devoted to uncovering Idi Amin's story in its entirety, layer by layer, telling all the truth and shedding light on the untruths! Compiled and co-written by Jaffar Amin and Margaret Akulia.
