Book Ping Meets Pang

    Book Details:
  • Author : Mary Jane Begin
  • Publisher :
  • Release : 2021-07-06
  • ISBN : 9781954332089
  • Pages : 36 pages

Download or read book Ping Meets Pang written by Mary Jane Begin and published by . This book was released on 2021-07-06 with total page 36 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Ping and Pang are both Pandas, but they don't look a thing like one another and that's a problem. Each maintains they possess the true qualities of being a Panda; the correct color, the size and shape of their ears, the even fluffiness of their tails. It is only when they realize what they have in common do they slowly appreciate each other's differences. The analogy to today's political and racial climate points to acceptance of the other side's differences and finding common ground. PING MEETS PANG is an educational tool. It is an allegory about inclusiveness and acceptance of "the other" told through two pandas. The story is meant to spark discussions about multiculturalism and body positivity, and inspire the protection and conservation of pandas. Includes conversation starters for further instruction and participation! Author/illustrator Mary Jane Begin says of PING MEETS PANG: "While on a recent trip to China I had the chance to visit the world-famous Chengdu Panda Research Base. My hope was to have a glimpse these roly-poly creatures in person. While on tour through the sanctuary, I spotted a section with Red pandas. I thought these don't look like pandas, they look more like red raccoons! I immediately imagined that the Red Panda would have a bit of a chip on its shoulder because everyone thinks a panda looks like a Giant Panda. When I came back to the States, I started sketching. Slowly the story transformed to be about two pandas who don't believe the other is actually a panda because they look and act so differently from each other." Mary Jane is an award-winning illustrator and author of numerous children's books, and professor in the Illustration Department at Rhode Island School of Design. She's also the Chair of Illustration in the M.F.A for Children's Literature at Hollins University. Her previous books include A MOUSE TOLD HIS MOTHER (Little Brown 25,000 HC, 131,00 PB), LITTLE MOUSE'S PAINTING (Morrow/Sea Star 120,100 HC, 21,000 PB). Mary Jane recently won the prestigious Big Xin Children's Literature Award in China for her book, Willow Buds; the Tale of Toad and Badger. She has received awards from the Society of Illustrators, Awards of Excellence from Communications Arts, and the Critici Erba Prize at the Bologna Book Fair as well as the Erma Simonton Black Award from the Bank Street College.

Book excerpt: Reviews Reviewed by Jordan Raanan, ESPN reporter A fascinating look at the life of an incredible man. Who else has gone from communist China to representing players in the NFL? The journey is jaw-dropping, but it still pales in comparison to the man he has become. A lot of lessons to be learned from these pages. Reviewed by Tom Pellisero, NFL Network host and reporter From a near-death experience as a boy in Bangkok to representing pro football players and putting on charity events, Doc Ping's story is an inspiring one - a reminder that anyone can make a difference in this world. Reviewed by David Birkett, Detroit Free Press, Lions NFL reporter Doc Ping is the NFL agent's version of Forrest Gump, a genuine man who has been connected to some remarkable events over the course of his extraordinary life. t's a fascinating story, and one that gives the reader a glimpse into what's made him so successful. Reviewed by Aaron Wilson, Houston Chronicle, Texans NFL reporter The Legend of Doc Ping is an apt description of his life's story and provides an outstanding peek behind the curtains of both the NFL and Doc's life. Well-done! Book Summary After witnessing the beheading of his Uncle, a very young Doc Ping and his family escaped from China on foot in fear for their lives. They left everything behind, including his father's position in the nationalist Chinese government and all of their possessions, and fled the country--first to Bangkok, and then to Taiwan. When Doc was nine, his father secretly arranged for him to travel on a freighter with 15 other civilians to the USA to live with the woman who helped resuscitate him from drowning a few years prior. Instead of offering him a better life, the woman was abusive, and after leaving her home, Doc lived in four more foster homes before joining the US Marine Corps after high school. In the Marines, Doc played football in Japan before deploying to Vietnam to fight for his country. Following his time in the Corps, Doc earned a Master's degree, coached Little League baseball, worked as an assistant principal, became a master of Jishukan-Ryu Jujitsu, and founded his own professional sports agency representing NFL players. As a result of the (highly) eventful life he's led, more than one of Doc's friends have referred to him as a "real life" Forrest Gump--and they might be right. Both overcame difficult childhoods, achieved athletic glory, fought for their country in Vietnam and shook JFK's hand. Both then went on to achieve great things in life, including finding love and having a family. The main difference here is that Forrest Gump is a work of fiction. Doc's stories, on the other hand, are actual accounts of his real life. This memoir contains some of the compelling stories from his remarkable journey.
