Download or read book Elemental Ecocriticism written by Jeffrey Jerome Cohen and published by U of Minnesota Press. This book was released on 2015-12-23 with total page 383 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: For centuries it was believed that all matter was composed of four elements: earth, air, water, and fire in promiscuous combination, bound by love and pulled apart by strife. Elemental theory offered a mode of understanding materiality that did not center the cosmos around the human. Outgrown as a science, the elements are now what we build our houses against. Their renunciation has fostered only estrangement from the material world. The essays collected in Elemental Ecocriticism show how elemental materiality precipitates new engagements with the ecological. Here the classical elements reveal the vitality of supposedly inert substances (mud, water, earth, air), chemical processes (fire), and natural phenomena, as well as the promise in the abandoned and the unreal (ether, phlogiston, spontaneous generation). Decentering the human, this volume provides important correctives to the idea of the material world as mere resource. Three response essays meditate on the connections of this collaborative project to the framing of modern-day ecological concerns. A renewed intimacy with the elemental holds the potential of a more dynamic environmental ethics and the possibility of a reinvigorated materialism.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Much past Canadian poetry described our people and landscape in lyrical terms. Combining research and wonder, Looking Through Stone burrows deeper -- the first collection of poems in Canada devoted exclusively to geology and mining. Quite literally, it goes underground. From volcanoes to vitamins, the book presents a wealth of factual information. It also explores past, more fanciful notions about how rocks, metals, and minerals fit into our human picture. In its pages, knowledge and imagination meet. Part I introduces a little basic geology. Part II focuses on the seven metals of the ancients, linked to the planets and days of the week, plus platinum and uranium. Part III delves into myths and legends about the power of gemstones. Part IV looks at the history and technology of mining, and its social and economic impact. A helpful glossary concludes this unique book that brings science and poetry together.

Book Doing and Being

Download or read book Doing and Being written by Jonathan Beere and published by Oxford University Press. This book was released on 2009-10-29 with total page 382 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Doing and Being confronts the problem of how to understand two central concepts of Aristotle's philosophy: energeia and dunamis. While these terms seem ambiguous between actuality/potentiality and activity/capacity, Aristotle did not intend them to be so. Through a careful and detailed reading of Metaphysics Theta, Beere argues that we can solve the problem by rejecting both "actuality" and "activity" as translations of energeia, and by working out an analogical conception of energeia. This approach enables Beere to discern a hitherto unnoticed connection between Plato's Sophist and Aristotle's Metaphysics Theta, and to give satisfying interpretations of the major claims that Aristotle makes in Metaphysics Theta, the claim that energeia is prior in being to capacity (Theta 8) and the claim that any eternal principle must be perfectly good (Theta 9).

This book was released on 2014-01-29 with total page 146 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Our understanding of nature, and in particular of physics and the laws governing it, has changed radically since the days of the ancient Greek natural philosophers. This book explains how and why these changes occurred, through landmark experiments as well as theories that - for their time - were revolutionary. The presentation covers Mechanics, Optics, Electromagnetism, Thermodynamics, Relativity Theory, Atomic Physics and Quantum Physics. The book places emphasis on ideas and on a qualitative presentation, rather than on mathematics and equations. Thus, although primarily addressed to those who are studying or have studied science, it can also be read by non-specialists. The author concludes with a discussion of the evolution and organization of universities, from ancient times until today, and of the organization and dissemination of knowledge through scientific publications and conferences.

Book The Way of the Four Elements

Download or read book The Way of the Four Elements written by John Michael Greer and published by Aeon Books. This book was released on 2024-04-30 with total page 134 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A one year course for students of the occult to expand their horizons through the study of fire, air, water, and earth. Based on an ancient understanding of the cycles of nature, John Michael Greer invites students of occult to continue their training with the study of the four elements. The four elements are one of the foremost themes of Western occult tradition and have been used across history as a basic template for the process of initiation and seasonal ritual. The pattern of study assigns each element to one of the four seasons of the year (spring, summer, autumn, winter), based upon traditional associations. The lessons are intended to be worked through in sync with each season, and there is no fixed starting point so students can begin with any of the four elements by following whichever season begins next. Each chapter includes both the theory and practice of an elemental education such as symbols and teachings relating to the elements, suggestions for further reading, exercises for awakening the etheric senses, and astral clairvoyance. The Way of the Four Elements is the quintessential next step for students of the occult to continue developing and honing the skills essential for a magical education.
