Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Engineering Geology is a multidisciplinary subject that interacts with other disciplines, such as mineralogy, petrology, structural geology, hydrogeology, seismic engineering, rock engineering, soil mechanics, geophysics, remote sensing (RS-GIS-GPS) and environmental geology. This book is the only one of its kind in the Indian market that caters to the students of all these subjects. Engineers require a deep understanding, interpretation and analyses of earth sciences before suggesting engineering designs and remedial measures to combat natural disasters, such as earthquakes, volcanoes, landslides, debris flows, tsunamis and floods. This book covers all aspects of engineering geology and is intended to serve as a reference for practicing civil engineers, geotechnical engineers, marine engineers, geologists and mining engineers. Engineering Geology has also been designed as a textbook for students pursuing undergraduate and postgraduate courses in advanced/applied geology and earth sciences. A plethora of examples and case studies relevant to the Indian context have been included for better understanding of the geological challenges faced by engineers. New in this Edition • The concept of watershed and the depiction of watershed atlas of India • Latest findings by the Indian Bureau of Mines • Recent developments in coastal engineering and innovative structures • New types of protective structures to guard against tsunamis • Role of geology in building smart cities • Environmental legislation in India
Download or read book The Stone Vessel Industry in the Second Temple Period written by Izchak Magen and published by . This book was released on 2002 with total page 224 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Hundreds of chalk stone vessels have been found during excavations at Second Temple period sites within Jerusalem. Originally linked to Jewish religious laws where the vessels were used in religious ceremonies concerned with purity, they eventually became everyday domestic vessels. This volume reports on the discovery of a quarry and workshops at Hizma, northeast of Jerusalem, which provided important evidence on production techniques and chronology, showing the vessels to have been produced between the later 1st century BC and c.70AD until the destruction of Jerusalem. This in turn enabled a typology to be constructed. The distribution of chalk stone vessels is also mapped. This book is an upated English version of an earlier book published in Hebrew in 1976 by Magen, and includes up-to-date evidence from recent excavations.

Download or read book Chicago in Stone and Clay written by Raymond Wiggers and published by Cornell University Press. This book was released on 2022-09-15 with total page 344 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Chicago in Stone and Clay explores the interplay between the city's most architecturally significant sites, the materials they're made of, and the sediments and bedrock they are anchored in. This unique geologist's survey of Windy City neighborhoods demonstrates the fascinating and often surprising links between science, art, engineering, and urban history. Drawing on two decades of experience leading popular geology tours in Chicago, Raymond Wiggers crafted this book for readers ranging from the region's large community of amateur naturalists, "citizen scientists," and architecture buffs to geologists, architects, educators, and other professionals seeking a new perspective on the themes of architecture and urbanism. Unlike most geology and architecture books, Chicago in Stone and Clay is written in the informal, accessible style of a natural history tour guide, humanizing the science for the nonspecialist reader. Providing an exciting new angle on both architecture and natural history, Wiggers uses an integrative approach that incorporates multiple themes and perspectives to demonstrate how the urban environment presents us with a rich geologic and architectural legacy.
