Not illustrated. 1833 edition. Excerpt: ... CHAPTER IX. Villiers was right: day after day passed; no notice was taken of the advertisement, and our hero quietly ate his way to the bar in comparatively great penury. He was not, however, pinched into such desperation, as when his allowance from Mr. Pearl ceased; but still he was extremely poor, and often submitted to feel the pressure of poverty rather than apply to Mrs. Servit, who resided in London solely on his account, and whose little income was entirely at his disposal till he was called to the bar. But his intimacy continued to ripen more and more into friendship with Villiers, whose peculiar character improved as he was better known, and his stingless misanthropy was always interesting and often amusing, as he had predicted; however, the confluence of events, which had so surprised Troven, passed into a slower and easier stream; but there was a mystery about the man which could never be fathomed. During term-time he regularly attended the hall, although he declared that he never intended to be called to the bar. Sometimes, on the evening of the last day of term, he went out of town, in what direction was never mentioned; and, although with Troven, when in town, he was a constant companion, he never asked him to come with him. He confessed that his circumstances were straightened, and that he was of no trade or profession, yet he pursued no business which occupied his leisure. All about his conduct was impenetrable; but in his chambers in town he was superior to most men; even in his eccentricities there was a show of rational purpose that made him distinguished as at once an odd and far-forecasting person. Troven frequently sought his company for his good sense, though tinged with melancholy. From one of those undivulged...

Book excerpt: NATIONAL BESTSELLER • A haunting fable about identity and the illusory innocence of childhood that moves from small-town America deep into the forest of humankind's most basic desires and fears. • "Utterly absorbing ... a luminous and thrilling novel about our humanity." —The Washington Post “I am a changeling—a word that describes within its own name what we are bound and intended to do. We kidnap a human child and replace him or her with one of our own....” The double story of Henry Day begins in 1949, when he is kidnapped at age seven by a band of wild childlike beings who live in an ancient, secret community in the forest. The changelings rename their captive Aniday and he becomes, like them, unaging and stuck in time. They leave one of their own to take his place, an imposter who must try–with varying success–to hide his true identity from the Day family. As the changeling Henry grows up, he is haunted by glimpses of his lost double and by vague memories of his own childhood a century earlier. Narrated in turns by Henry and Aniday, The Stolen Child follows them as their lives converge, driven by their obsessive search for who they were before they changed places in the world.

Book excerpt: From the author of the critically acclaimed The Mermaids Singing comes a haunting, luminous novel set on an enchanted island off the west coast of Ireland where magic, faith, and superstition pervade the inhabitants’ lives and tangled relationships—perfect for fans of Eowyn Ivey, Sarah Waters, and Angela Carter. May 1959. From one side of St. Brigid’s Island, the mountains of Connemara can be glimpsed on the distant mainland; from the other, the Atlantic stretches as far as the eye can see. This remote settlement, without electricity or even a harbor, has scarcely altered since its namesake saint set up a convent of stone huts centuries ago. Those who live there, including sisters Rose and Emer, are hardy and resourceful, dependent on the sea and each other for survival. Despite the island’s natural beauty, it is a place that people move away from, not to—until an outspoken American, also named Brigid, arrives to claim her late uncle’s cottage. Brigid has come for more than an inheritance. She’s seeking a secret holy well that’s rumored to grant miracles. Emer, as scarred and wary as Rose is friendly and beautiful, has good reason to believe in inexplicable powers. Despite her own strange abilities—or perhaps because of them—Emer fears that she won’t be able to save her young son, Niall, from a growing threat. Yet Brigid has a gift too, even more remarkable than Emer’s. As months pass and Brigid carves out a place on the island and in the sisters’ lives, a complicated web of betrayal, fear, and desire culminates in one shocking night that will change the island, and its inhabitants, forever. Steeped in Irish history and lore, The Stolen Child is a mesmerizing descent into old world beliefs, and a captivating exploration of desire, myth, motherhood, and love in all its forms. “Steeped in dark Irish mythology, The Stolen Child is a piercing exploration of regret and desire, longing and love. It is a gorgeously written, inventive, and compelling novel.”—Ayelet Waldman Kirkus Most Addictive Books of 2017

As sirens blare all around, the Shawbrook family take refuge in a packed shelter.
