He meets Johanna McKenna on a westward wagon train; they marry and strike out on their own to build a family along the Comanche Trace, the ancient Comanche war trails. Their first son, Cole, seems born to the gun. It is a wild, untamed, lawless land in an era where every mother's son carries a gun and knows how to use it. Some are better than others and with the reputation come stories about those who bear the title gunfighter. Cole's travels put him in contact with ruthless, savage men who are used to having their own way and taking what they want from hapless victims. He is forced to defend himself, and does so with fire in his soul. Out of necessity, he becomes a lonely man, drifting from town to town, untrusting except to himself. From child on the Texas frontier to adulthood as a man behind the gun, Cole Stockton searches for his destiny, struggles with his direction in life, and emerges as a gunfighter whose moral code makes him a man of justice.

Book Stockton s Path to Bankruptcy

Download or read book Stockton s Path to Bankruptcy written by Dennis Cochran and published by Dorrance Publishing. This book was released on 2019-08-21 with total page 141 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Stockton’s Path to Bankruptcy How our city government grabbed and abused power and partnered with the newspaper to mislead the community By: Dennis Cochran Stockton, California, grew out of the Gold Rush of 1849. It became a thriving city through agriculture and manufacturing. It boasts excellent schools and colleges and has a world-renowned symphony and art museum. But, in July 2012, it was the largest American city to file for bankruptcy and currently is # 8 on Forbes Most Dangerous Cities in America. Stockton’s Path to Bankruptcy is an insider look at how the city fell apart. In 1993, Stockton won enterprise zone designation from the state government to be used to revitalize the depressed city center. Dennis Cochran was one of several locals invited to submit an incentive idea. He proposed a volunteer-staffed graffiti cleanup program. Cleaning graffiti is an easy, cost-effective way to discourage crime and promote beautification. Initially encouraged by the enterprise zone, Cochran soon learned that it was corrupt and mismanaged with unclear policies, skyrocketing permit fees, and local businesses bullied until they abandoned the center entirely. Like many citizens, Cochran was on the outside of the local government – his offers of help ignored and his good advice rejected. In just under twenty years, Stockton’s local government, protected by a local newspaper, destroyed the trust of its citizens. Cochran chronicles every bureaucratic twist and depravity – from the city losing $43,000 a day, plundering public safety funds to finance a ballpark, to stealing land from a local church. Stockton didn’t become bankrupt because of the financial bubble or housing crisis. Stockton went bankrupt because of its public officials’ abuse of power and attitude of hostility towards the community. Exposing mistakes acts as a disinfectant – and Stockton’s Path to Bankruptcy is a powerful aid to helping heal Stockton and serves as a warning to citizens of other cities.

Book Porter and Ike Stockton

Download or read book Porter and Ike Stockton written by Michael R. Maddox and published by Michael R. Maddox. This book was released on 2014-05-14 with total page 530 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Renowned historian of the American West, Frederick Nolan, author of "The West of Billy the Kid" and "The Lincoln County War: A Documentary History, " noted that with the publication of this new book Maddox has "written a whole new chapter in outlaw history." -- During the first week of May 1881 the "Santa Fe New Mexican" carried two reward notices from Governor Lew Wallace. One was for $500 for William Bonney, "alias The Kid" and directly below that was another reward notice for $2250 for Ike Stockton and his gang. Like Billy the Kid, Ike had a price of $500 on his head. Compared to the Kid, few have ever heard of Ike Stockton. Fewer still have heard of his older brother, Porter. Yet it was Porter Stockton who was by far the most dangerous and deadly of the brothers. In March 1881 the "Las Vegas (New Mexico) Optic" described Porter Stockton as "one of the most hardened murderers and desperadoes that ever darkened the pages of history and annals of crime." Countless hours of research over a period of six years have resulted in this thorough and entertaining account of the turmoil caused by the Stockton brothers. From cattle kings to cowboys, from cow towns to hell on wheels railroad camps and from shootouts to lynchings, their story encompasses all of the legends of the mythic American West. Take hold of this book like you would the reins of a skittish horse, find the sweet spot in the saddle, or better yet your easy chair, and settle in for a hell of a ride. NOTE: Non-fiction, softcover, 530 pages. This book includes a bibliography, endnotes and an index. It contains black and white illustrations, photos and maps. EXCERPT: Driving cattle across large stretches of the arid portions of Texas and New Mexico, through territory inhabited by free roaming and combative Indians required men who would never back down from any challenge. Even Oliver Loving lost his life as the result of an Indian bullet received while hunkered down in the mud of the Pecos River. Inevitably, some of the herders stepped over the line and became desperadoes. One of the tempests coming out of Texas would brew and build around Stephenville before moving west and north along with the suffocating dust cloud stirred up by the hooves of thousands of Texas cattle. Erath County residents would figure prominently as the storm regained strength in Colfax County, New Mexico. The same Erathians would be present when the storm grew to reach its cyclonic and climactic outburst in the San Juan country of New Mexico and Colorado. Porter and Ike Stockton were at the epicenter of this final blast. Book excerpt: Here, for the first time, is the private and most intimate correspondence of one of America's most influential and incisive journalists--Hunter S. Thompson. In letters to a Who's Who of luminaries from Norman Mailer to Charles Kuralt, Tom Wolfe to Lyndon Johnson, William Styron to Joan Baez--not to mention his mother, the NRA, and a chain of newspaper editors--Thompson vividly catches the tenor of the times in 1960s America and channels it all through his own razor-sharp perspective. Passionate in their admiration, merciless in their scorn, and never anything less than fascinating, the dispatches of The Proud Highway offer an unprecedented and penetrating gaze into the evolution of the most outrageous raconteur/provocateur ever to assault a typewriter.
