Book Clarity Cut and Culture

Book excerpt: "Images of diamonds appear everywhere in American culture. And everyone who has a diamond has a story to tell about it. Our stories about diamonds not only reveal what we do with these tiny stones, but also suggest how we create value, meaning, and identity through our interactions with material culture in general.Things become meaningful through our interactions with them, but how do people go about making meaning? What can we learn from an ethnography about the production of identity, creation of kinship, and use of diamonds in understanding selves and social relationships? By what means do people positioned within a globalized political-economy and a compelling universe of advertising interact locally with these tiny polished rocks? This book draws on 12 months of fieldwork with diamond consumers in New York City as well as an analysis of the iconic De Beers campaign that promised romance, status, and glamour to anyone who bought a diamond to show that this thematic pool is just one resource among many that diamond owners draw upon to engage with their own stones. The volume highlights the important roles that memory, context, and circumstance also play in shaping how people interpret and then use objects in making personal worlds. It shows that besides operating as subjects in an ad-burdened universe, consumers are highly creative, idiosyncratic, and theatrical agents"--

Book The Diamond Invention

Download or read book The Diamond Invention written by Edward Jay Epstein and published by London : Hutchinson. This book was released on 1982 with total page 290 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This is a popular and somewhat superficial account of the international diamond industry, written by an American journalist. The book is based on extensive reading and investigations, including visits to several mines in Southern Africa, but contains a number of inaccuracies and is not as reliable and informative as the similar account by T. Green (The world of diamonds, London 1981). The major part of the book deals with the role of De Beers and the Central Selling Organization, and chapter 4 "Holding back the ocean" - is devoted to the operations in Namibia. The author describes how the cartel organizes production and marketing on a global scale, and how it has repeatedly interfered in the internal political affairs of African states. He predicts a collapse of the monopoly and the disintegration of the industry, with profound effects on a country like Namibia which depends heavily on income from the export of diamonds. There is also a bibliographic guide to the vast literature on diamonds, mining and marketing (p. 239-56). (Eriksen/Moorsom 1989).

Book Rocks Ice and Dirty Stones

Download or read book Rocks Ice and Dirty Stones written by Marcia Pointon and published by Reaktion Books. This book was released on 2017-03-15 with total page 272 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The king of stones, valued since antiquity for their unrivalled hardness, diamonds today are both desired and deplored. Once faceted and polished they glitter on the fingers of brides-to-be and in the ornaments of the super-rich, but their extraction from some of the world’s poorest countries remains contentious. Immensely valuable for their size, diamonds can be easily hidden and transported, making them perfect contraband. Diamonds have been widely used in industry since the nineteenth century and have long been valued for their pharmaceutical and prophylactic properties. This entertaining and richly illustrated book examines the history of the diamond trade through the centuries from India and Brazil to South Africa and Europe and investigates what happens to diamonds once they reach the cutters and polishers. Marcia Pointon takes the reader on a unique tour of the ways in which the quadrahedron diamond shape has inspired design, architecture, and painting, from the symbolism of medieval manuscripts to modern-day graffiti. She questions the etiquette of engagement rings, and she reminds us why and how lost, stolen, or cursed diamonds create suspense in so many classic novels and films. This compelling and fascinating account of the history of sparklers around the world will appeal to all who covet, as well as all who despise, the unparalleled brilliance and glitter of the diamond.
