Book excerpt: The overall objective of this 10-year Regional Queen Conch Fishery Management and Conservation Plan is to guide the implementation of a set of identified management measures that can be applied at the regional or sub-regional level for the sustainability of queen conch populations and for the maintenance of a healthy fishery and livelihood of the people involved in the fishery. The ecosystem approach forms the basis of this Regional Queen Conch Fishery Management and Conservation Plan, enhanci ng partnerships and collaboration throughout the Wider Caribbean region to improve the long-term governance of queen conch fisheries across the Caribbean. The Regional Queen Conch Fishery Management and Conservation Plan was formulated with the following specific objectives: 1. To improve the collection and integration of scientific data needed to determine the overall queen conch population status as the basis for the application of ecosystem-based management. 2. To harmonize measures aimed a t increasing the stability of the queen conch population and to implement best-management practices for a sustainable fishery. 3. To increase coordination and collaboration toward achieving better education and outreach, monitoring and research, co-management and strengthening, optimizing and harmonizing regional governance arrangements. 4. To adopt regional management measures, which incorporate the precautionary approach

Book Proposal for Conservation of Queen Conch Strombus Gigas in the Alacranes Reef

Download or read book Proposal for Conservation of Queen Conch Strombus Gigas in the Alacranes Reef written by Alberto De Jesus Navarrete and published by . This book was released on 2014 with total page 13 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "Coral reefs are highly complex and high diversity systems that are distributed in tropical and subtropical areas of the Planet (Ault et al., 2005). From the economic point of view, are highly productive in terms of tourism and production of fishery resources, and other supplies for human consumption. One of the fishery resources reefs Mexico is the queen conch (Strombus gigas L.) that is widely distributed from the Mexican Caribbean to the Gulf of Mexico in the state of Veracruz, but is currently limited to some reefs of the Gulf of Mexico and Caribbean sea (Baqueiro, et al. 1999). This conch represented the second fishery resource, surpassed only by the spiny lobster (Panulirus argus) (Jesus-Navarrete et al., 1992). Despite the different management strategies that include catch quotas, bans reproductive, and protected natural areas, as the Alacranes reef itself, resource recovery in Mexico and elsewhere in the Caribbean, has not been visible"--Introduction.

Book Restocking and Stock Enhancement of Marine Invertebrate Fisheries

Download or read book Restocking and Stock Enhancement of Marine Invertebrate Fisheries written by Johann D. Bell and published by Elsevier. This book was released on 2005-12-07 with total page 400 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Annotation Many of the world's fisheries are in trouble - they no longer yield the catches, and potential profits, they once did. The habitats that support fisheries have been damaged by pollution and other irresponsible use of coastal land. Destructive fishing methods like trawling and blast fishing have also changed fish habitats resulting in support of fewer fish. The authors draw on more than 1000 scientific papers covering 11 groups/species of marine invertebrates. From this large literature, they distill 20 lessons for assessing and guiding the use of restocking and stock enhancement in the management of invertebrate fisheries. · Written by 7 expert authors · Covers 11 groups/species of marine invertebrates · Reviews over 1000 scientific papers · Identifies 20 lessons that can be learned from past restocking and stock enhancement initiatives · Proposes a new approach to assess the potential value of hatchery releases to complement other forms of management · Assesses progress of disciple against the blueprint for a responsible approach.

This book was released on 2021-01-27 with total page 118 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Fish and fish products are amongst the most highly traded food items in the world today, with most of the world’s countries reporting some fish trade. This assessment of commercial trade in CITES-listed marine species occurs within a broader context of globalization and a more general rapid expansion of the international trade in fish and fish products. It summarizes ten years (2007–2016) of trade in a subset of commercially exploited marine taxa listed in CITES Appendix II. We examine both CITES trade data reporting processes (including information on the practical elements of reporting by CITES Parties) and analyse CITES trade records. The analysis shows how, for Appendix II CITES-listed marine species, the overall number of direct export transactions reported by CITES Parties has increased sevenfold during 1990–2016 and how trade for each CITES-listed marine species sub-group has changed through time. An assessment is made, with assistance from species and trade experts, on the strengths and challenges of collating and reporting on trade in CITES-listed marine species. Additional datasets of relevance to marine species trade are highlighted, and recommendations for further refining and improving CITES trade reporting for marine species are provided.

Book Analysis of Agricultural and Fisheries Policy in The Bahamas

Download or read book Analysis of Agricultural and Fisheries Policy in The Bahamas written by Olga Shik and published by Inter-American Development Bank. This book was released on 2018-09-21 with total page 86 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Although agriculture and fisheries account for only 1.6% of the GDP of the Bahamas, they produce 3% of all jobs and are important for the diversification of the economy. The Government of the Bahamas supports agriculture through a combination of value chain development measures, research and extension services, infrastructure development, and border protection. Support to producers averaged 19.08% of gross farm receipts in 2012-2014, and a significant share of support (29%) was provided in the form of transfers to general services. At the same time, total transfers arising from agricultural policy reached only 0.28% of the national GDP. Reducing barriers to trade, reducing regulations and streamlining access to incentives for farmers, and improving information services will help increase the efficiency and competitiveness of the agricultural sector.

Book excerpt: During the last decades there has been an increasing evidence of drastic changes in marine ecosystems due to human-induced impacts, especially on benthic ecosystems. The so called “animal forests” are currently showing a dramatic loss of biomass and biodiversity all over the world. These communities are dominated by sessile suspension feeder organisms (such as sponges, corals, gorgonians, bivalves, etc.) that generate three-dimensional structures, similar to the trees in the terrestrial forest. The animal forest provide several ecosystem services such as food, protection and nursery to the associated fauna, playing an important role in the local hydrodynamic and biogeochemical cycles near the sea floor and acting also as carbon sinks. The present book focus its attention on these three dimensional animal structures including, for the first time, all the different types of animal forests of the world in a single volume.
