Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Truth About the Tsar: And the Present State of Russia IN Russia As It Really Is I pointed out the red smoke issuing from the Tsar's chimney. In The Truth About the Tsar I pointed out that the edifice was on fire, and that if it was to be saved Nicholas must abandon his inheritance of autocracy, side with the people, and give to them the reality, not the shadow of freedom. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Russia's Message: The People Against the Czar Realising the immensity of the task that lay before me, I have confined my attention in the present work largely to the Russian part of Russia, leaving aside entirely all Asiatic Russia, the Caucasus and the Baltic Provinces, Poland, and Finland. The Polish and Finnish situations are of such exceptional importance in relation to the Russian that I spent several wee/es in visiting both countries, but I have not made them a part of my work. One feature of the book needs perhaps a special explanation. The crimes of the Russian Government are so monstrous and so mani fold that I have quite despaired of giving any satisfactory picture of them as a whole. In my first chapters I have dwelt at some length with this subject, but I have devised the economical measure of taking the yews as my central theme, not because I consider that their per secutions are any worse than other peoples' in Russia, nor because they are more important than other nationalities, as for instance the Tartars or the Poles, but because they have themselves been selected by the Government as the centre of the whole persecution system. In other parts of the book I have tried to portray not merely the central feature but the whole situation. To-day my message of friendship from the Russian to the English-speaking peoples is of a different character. The late Sir Robert Morier, one of the ablest of English Ambassadors, was accustomed to say that no man should be more than 5 per cent, ahead of the people he sought to influence; if he was 10 per cent, in advance of current opinion he was considered a crank; if 20 per cent, a fanatic or even a madman. My two books on Russia contained nothing but sober fact, but they were ahead of public opinion. My predictions have been fulfilled. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Downfall of Russia: Behind the Scenes in the Realm of the Czar In this volume is presented to American readers an unbiased description of the real state of affairs in Russia to-day. The sketches here brought together are the result of a special visit to Russia by Mr. Hugo Ganz, the well-known writer of Vienna, who was furnished with the best of introductions to the various circles of Russian society, and had thus exceptional opportunities to acquire reliable information. Were not the reputation of the author and the standard of his informants alike absolutely above suspicion, it would seem incredible that such conditions as those depicted could exist in the twentieth century in a country claiming a place among civilized nations. Indeed, whereas Japan has incontestably proved that she is emerging from the darkness of centuries, Russia is content to remain in a state of semi-barbarism which might be looked for in the Middle Ages. Download or read book The Story of Russia Classic Reprint written by Robert Van Bergen and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-12-19 with total page 152 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Story of Russia Russia in Europe, however, with the exception Of Poland and Finland, is a country with one religion and one language: that is, the czar and his government recog nize and admit no other. That is the cause Of the perse cution Of the Jews, four fifths of whom dwell in the Southwest Of Russia in an area covering square miles, which is sometimes mentioned as the jewish terri tory. Every succeeding czar has tried to make all his subjects think and act in the manner prescribed by him. The process is known as Russianizing. And goes on incessantly in its different stages. Immediately after the conquest of a country, its people are assured that their religion, institutions, and language, shall be respected: the only difference is that the native Officials are displaced by Russians. This continues until Russian rule is firmly established, and no one dreams of resisting the czar. Then the Russian language displaces the native tongue, and if disturbances occur, the military is called in to inflict a terrible punishment. The loss of the native language carries with it that Of old institutions, and when the people have submitted to their fate, it is the turn of their religion. The Russian is in no hurry; he has a conviction that time has no changes in store for his empire, hence he bides his time, and is likely to succeed in his purpose. This process is now carried on in Central Asia where Russian power has found its greatest expansion in modern times. It is but fair to admit that Russian absorption there has been highly beneficial because robber tribes were reduced to law and order. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Men and Things Russian: Or Holiday Travels in the Lands of the Czar This book, descriptive of a visit paid to Russia during his annual furlough, in the autumn of this year, is given to the public, because the author has reason to believe that the publication would be acceptable to not a few friends, and because of the interest at present felt by many in 'Men and Things Russian.' The author states nothing in the book that has not been matter of his own observation or experience, or with regard to which he has not obtained information from what would be considered the most reliable sources. He has set down nothing in prejudice, or to serve any end but that of truth; and, beyond everything, he seeks by his work to foster friendly feelings with a great people, whose well-being is bound up with our own. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Downfall of Russia: Behind the Scenes in the Realm of the Czar We wonder at its great writers, but we cannot conceive how their greatness is possible under the existing conditions of public life, which remind one of a penitentiary rather than Of a civilized state. And the question that persistently arises is whether our conception of these conditions corre sponds to reality, or whether we are laboring under such a delusion as would befall one attempting to judge public life in Germany from the speeches of Bebel and other radicals. In truth, we know only the opposition or revolutionary literature of Russia; and, as far as appearances go, it is hardly credible that a system such as it describes and brands for its inhuman wickedness can long retain the as cendency. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from From Czar to Bolshevik The inquiry which took me to Russia last year had an economic rather than a political character. Within a very short space of time, however, it became evident that very little progress could be made with the former aspect until I had become conversant with the political conditions of the New Russia, so entirely at variance with the old, and thus be in a position to gauge their effects economically upon this country. The study so made, as day by day the extraordinary kaleidoscopic events passed before the eyes, proved of absorbing interest, and left me deeply impressed with their extreme importance alike to this country and to Russia herself. The occurrences which led directly to the present position are set down in diary form in these pages. I have refrained from criticism. For the sequence of events appears to furnish its own answers to the thoughtful man. But in the national interests the diary has a further object. It is of the highest importance that the true causes for the present appalling condition of Russia should be understood, and the question be regarded with that breadth of view and the clarity and coolness in passing judgment with which our race has become credited by the foreigner. At present there is a strong feeling amongst the peoples of the Entente that Russia has "let us in." That the loss of the Eastern front has proved a disaster of the first magnitude is obvious to all. As a direct consequence we are now engaged upon the greatest battle in history and fighting for our lives, or, which we value more, our national honour.
