Book Religious Instruction in State Schools

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Religious Instruction in State Schools: Statement Prepared by the Rev. Canon D. J. Garland for the Education Committee of the Parliament of New Zealand Contrast this settlement with New Zealand, where there have been agitations, more or less continuous, since 1877, asking for religious instruction, seven Bills in Parliament. Attempting to deal with the problem. Not one Bill for repea'. Or even for modification in the Australian States after the system was established, and no agitation except from the Roman Catholic Church, which in New Zealand also has agita ted, though there is no religious instruction in State schools. It is not urged by the League that there is complete and universal satisfaction, or even that the system is abso lately perfect, for there is nothing under the sun which gives complete and universal satisfaction - objectors are to be found to anything and everything. It is admitted, and never has been claimed to the contrary, that the Roman Catholic Church opposes the system of religious instruction advocated by the League; but it is pointed out that that Church is also opposedto the secular system of education, and advocates a system of denominational schools supported by the State. On the other hand, every other Christian Church which has expressed itself in Australia stands by the national school system, provided it includes the religious instruction system referred to. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Religion and the State: Or the Bible and the Public Schools The object of this volume is to answer these questions. As to the correctness of the conclu sion, and the pertinency and power of the argu ment to sustain it, the reader can fairly judge only by perusing the entire series of essays. If he will turn to the last number, entitled The Conclusion, he will find a summary of the whole discussion, and be the better able to judge of the relations of its several parts to each other. No one aspect of the question exhausts it and no examination of it can be deemed at all thorough or complete that does not carefully consider the principles and ends of civil government, especially as constitutionally es tablished in this country. Book The Barsden Memoirs 1799 1816

Download or read book The Barsden Memoirs 1799 1816 written by Grant Rodwell and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2022-02-27 with total page 223 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Covering the life of Josephus Henry Barsden from his birth in 1799 through his childhood to 16 years of age, the Barsden memoirs describe events from a Sussex smugglers’ inn, a convict ship to the colony of New South Wales, sealing and whaling expeditions to Van Diemen’s Land, and Barsden’s participation in a Tahitian civil war. The author assesses the value of memoirs, and of these memoirs in particular to students of history in respect to the transnational paradigm. He tests the historicity and veracity of their contents, and provides an engaging exegesis and graphical supplement of its contents. Of central importance is Barsden’s account of the Battle of Fe’i Pi, which was in many respects the Pacific’s equivalent to the contemporaneous Battle of Waterloo, such was its lasting impact on Pacific geopolitics. This was no ordinary childhood, and poses many questions about a transnational adolescent’s impact on major events. A fascinating read for scholars and students of Australian, Pacific, and British Colonial History, written with academic rigour but accessible to non-specialists.
