We record lots of books and autographs, which is a considerable increase over any previous season since our compilation was begun. While our record aims to show all important books and manu scripts selling for over three dollars for the lot, a good many items, necessarily, are thrown out, to keep the volume within reasonable size. Current books which can still be had of the publishers are generally excluded, and in cases where remainders are being worked off by throwing Copies into numerous sales, a selection only is shown. In other cases, also, where more than three or four Copies of the same book have been sold, a representative selection only is generally introduced. Some other items selling at about our limit, more especially books in foreign languages, as well as occasional cases where the catalogue description was too meagre to identify the book, have been excluded. Taking it for granted that this condensation is uniform through the seven volumes of our work, it is interesting to see the growth Of this particular department Of the book business in America. Our initial volume for'1895 recorded only 6025 lots 1896 reached 741 I 1897, 8562; 1898, 7547; 1899, 8859; 1900, 9662; and 1901, The growth has been constant with the exception Of the single set back in 1898. The ultimate pinnacle of book collecting will have been attained. He may fill out and broaden his collection, but greater heights he cannot achieve. We who watched the dispersal of the Hoe collection have marvelled at the huge advances upon the prices paid by him. But in counting up the profits we have left out of our reckoning that larger profit, not of dollars, but of months and years of Joy in possession which made up Mr. Hoe's half century of collecting. Mr. Hoe had a rough and unpleasing exterior and an overbearing manner, but back of that and back of the rest less, energetic business man there was the true collector, the true bibliophile, and we may be certain that the happiest hours of his long and busy life were those spent among his books. To a certain extent also this hobby of collecting fine books brings with it its own reward. The collector has the joys of acquisition and of possession, and at the end, if he has collected with discrimination, his library will sell for as much, or nearly. As much as he has paid - this at least (allowing for exceptions enough to prove the rule) is the record of the book-market for the last century. In other words he can eat his cake and have it too. The auction season of 1916-17, however, was far advanced' when the final step was taken; and the change from neutrality to active participation came so gradually that its effects had been largely discounted, and the records made at the few re maining important sales show little or no falling off from the high figure set earlier in the season. The Robinson sale of rare Americana held on April 30 and May 1 at the Anderson Galleries is a case in point. This was, with perhaps one exception, the most important sale of the season, and the prices realized at it were remarkably high. Colonel Robinson was a heavy buyer at the Hoe sale, and, in most instances, the records at his sale showed an increase over cost. The sale of the library of the late Samuel H. Austin at the American Art Galleries, one week earlier, was also one of the most successful of the season, with prices holding well above the average.
