Book excerpt: "The Stage Struck Me!" is a funny, informative and sometimes sad account of the life of a jobbing actor and writer in the 1940s and 1950s, full of anecdotes about the famous, the infamous, the charming and the downright loopy people he met along the way. After joining the South African Army and serving as a gunner in the coastal artillery, Neville Phillips was transferred to the entertainment unit where he spent four years doing shows for the Allied troops in North Africa and Italy. In 1946 he was demobbed to London and it was here that Neville Phillips met and got to know some truly remarkable people, as well as writing West End reviews, pantomime, cabaret, and a musical starring Pat Kirkwood. "The Stage Struck Me!" is a fascinating and sometimes poignant account of times, places and people that played such an important part in a young aspiring actor's life.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Stagestruck traces the making of a vibrant French theater industry between the reign of Louis XIV and the French Revolution. During this era more than eighty provincial and colonial cities celebrated the inauguration of their first public playhouses. These theaters emerged as the most prominent urban cultural institutions in prerevolutionary France, becoming key sites for the articulation and contestation of social, political, and racial relationships. Combining rich description with nuanced analysis based on extensive archival evidence, Lauren R. Clay illuminates the wide-ranging consequences of theater's spectacular growth for performers, spectators, and authorities in cities throughout France as well as in the empire's most important Atlantic colony, Saint-Domingue. Clay argues that outside Paris the expansion of theater came about through local initiative, civic engagement, and entrepreneurial investment, rather than through actions or policies undertaken by the royal government and its agents. Reconstructing the business of theatrical production, she brings to light the efforts of a wide array of investors, entrepreneurs, directors, and actors-including women and people of color-who seized the opportunities offered by commercial theater to become important agents of cultural change. Portraying a vital and increasingly consumer-oriented public sphere beyond the capital, Stagestruck overturns the long-held notion that cultural change flowed from Paris and the royal court to the provinces and colonies. This deeply researched book will appeal to historians of Europe and the Atlantic world, particularly those interested in the social and political impact of the consumer revolution and the forging of national and imperial cultural networks. In addition to theater and literary scholars, it will attract the attention of historians and sociologists who study business, labor history, and the emergence of the modern French state.

Book Poel Granville Barker Guthrie Wanamaker

Download or read book Poel Granville Barker Guthrie Wanamaker written by Cary M. Mazer and published by A&C Black. This book was released on 2013-12-04 with total page 262 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: All four figures in this volume have been canonized as central to 'stage-centred' Shakespearean scholarship and stage practice. From William Poel's reproductions of early modern stages in the late nineteenth century to Sam Wanamaker's reconstruction of the Globe on London's South Bank, they all viewed Shakespeare's plays as being enmeshed in the social and historical dynamics of theatremaking and theatregoing. The volume considers how their attempts to recapture early modern performance conditions can be considered progressive.
