Book Inverse Solutions for Laminar Boundary layer Flows with Separation and Reattachment

Download or read book Inverse Solutions for Laminar Boundary layer Flows with Separation and Reattachment written by James Edward Carter and published by . This book was released on 1975 with total page 72 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Numerical solutions of the laminar, incompressible boundary-layer equations are presented for flows involving separation and reattachment. Regular solutions are obtained with an inverse approach in which either the displacement thickness or the skin friction is specified; the pressure is deduced from the solution. A vorticity--stream-function formulation of the boundary-layer equations is used to eliminate the unknown pressure. Solutions of the resulting finite-difference equations, in which the flow direction is taken into account, are obtained by several global iteration schemes which are stable and have unconditional diagonal dominance. Results are compared with Klineberg and Steger's separated boundary-layer calculations, and with Briley's solution of the Navier-Stokes equations for a separated region. In addition, an approximate technique is presented in which the streamwise convection of vorticity is set equal to zero in the reversed flow region; such a technique results in a quick forward-marching procedure for separated flows.

Book Lecture Series boundary Layer Theory

Download or read book Lecture Series boundary Layer Theory written by H. Schlichting and published by . This book was released on 1949 with total page 148 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The subject of turbulent flow is treated in detail. The available data on flow through pipes and over flat plates are presented. Turbulent wakes and jets are treated by means of the Prandtl mixing length theory. A section is devoted to the Gruschwitz method for calculating turbulent boundary layers in accelerated and retarded flows. The methods of Betz and Jones for determining profile drag from wake surveys are given. A chapter on the theory of the stability of the laminar boundary layer, developed from the point of view of small oscillations, is also included.

Book Stability of Time Dependent and Spatially Varying Flows

Download or read book Stability of Time Dependent and Spatially Varying Flows written by D.L. Dwoyer and published by Springer. This book was released on 1987 with total page 372 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume is the collection of papers presented at the workshop on 'The Stability of Spatially Varying and Time Dependent Flows" sponsored by the Institute for Computer Applications in Science and Engineering (lCASE) and NASA Langley Research Center (LaRC) during August 19- 23, 1985. The purpose of this workshop was to bring together some of the experts in the field for an exchange of ideas to update the current status of knowledge and to help identify trends for future research. Among the invited speakers were D.M. Bushnell, M. Goldstein, P. Hall, Th. Herbert, R.E. Kelly, L. Mack, A.H. Nayfeh, F.T. Smith, and C. von Kerczek. The contributed papers were by A. Bayliss, R. Bodonyi, S. Cowley, C. Grosch, S. Lekoudis, P. Monkewitz, A. Patera, and C. Streett. In the first article, Bushnell provides a historical background on laminar flow control (LFC) research and summarizes the crucial role played by stability theory in LFC system design. He also identifies problem areas in stability theory requiring further research from the view-point of ap plications to LFC design. It is an excellent article for theoreticians looking for some down-to-earth applications of stability theory.

Book On the Three dimensional Instability of Laminar Boundary Layers on Concave Walls

Download or read book On the Three dimensional Instability of Laminar Boundary Layers on Concave Walls written by Henry Görtler and published by . This book was released on 1954 with total page 40 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A study is made of the stability of laminar boundary-layer profiles on slightly curved walls relative to small disturbances that result from vortices whose axes are parallel to the principal direction of flow. The result is an eigenvalue problem by which, for a given undisturbed flow at a prescribed wall, the amplification or decay is computed for each Reynolds number and each vortex thickness. For neutral disturbances (zero amplification) a critical Reynolds number is determined for each vortex distribution. The numerical calculation produces amplified disturbances on concave walls only.
