Book The Stability of Moving Average Technical Trading Rules on the Dow Jones Index

Download or read book The Stability of Moving Average Technical Trading Rules on the Dow Jones Index written by Blake LeBaron and published by . This book was released on 2000 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This paper reafirms previous results that show a distinct change in performance of moving average trading rules on the Dow Jones Index over the past 10 years relative to the previous 90 years. The performance in forecasting conditional means has changed significantly. In contrast to this is the fact that technical rules continue to forecast conditional variances in a similar fashion to the previous 90 years. Several tests are performed to demonstrate the robustness of these results over alternative trading mechnasims. Finally, the results are discussed in the context of datasnooping versus structural changes in the Dow.

Book Profits from Technical Trading Rules

Download or read book Profits from Technical Trading Rules written by Mark Ready and published by . This book was released on 2009 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: I examine the predictability of daily returns for the Dow Jones Industrial Average by comparing the technical trading rules developed by Allen and Karjalainen (1999) with moving average rules studied by Brock, Lakonishok, and LeBaron (1992). I argue that this comparison lends support to the hypothesis that the apparent success (after transaction costs) of the Brock et al. (1992) moving average rules is a spurious result of data snooping. If it were reliable, investors would like to use technical analysis to improve their portfolio returns, and firms would like to use it to improve the timing of their security offerings. My results serve as a reminder that patterns in historical data, even though they appear very consistent, need not persist in the future.

Book Computational Intelligence Techniques for Trading and Investment

Download or read book Computational Intelligence Techniques for Trading and Investment written by Christian Dunis and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2014-03-26 with total page 239 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book provides a comprehensive guide to market timing using moving averages. Part I explores the foundations of market timing rules, presenting a methodology for examining how the value of a trading indicator is computed. Using this methodology the author then applies the computation of trading indicators to a variety of market timing rules to analyse the commonalities and differences between the rules. Part II goes on to present a comprehensive analysis of the empirical performance of trading rules based on moving averages.

Book Do Moving Average Rules Make Profits A Study Using the Madrid Stock Market

Download or read book Do Moving Average Rules Make Profits A Study Using the Madrid Stock Market written by Laura Nuñez and published by . This book was released on 2007 with total page 16 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Previous studies have reported mixed results with regard to the success of technical trading rules.Studies that provide positive evidence are [Brock et al (1992), Karjalainen (1994), Bessembinder et al (1995),Mills (1997), and Fernandez et al (1999)]. Studies rejecting the utility of technical trading rules are [Hudson et al (1996) or Allen et al (1999)]. A recent body of work has applied evolutionary algorithms to the design of trading rules [see Karjalainen (1994), Allen et al (1999), Fernandez et al (2001) and Nuntilde;ez (2002 for genetic alhorithms models]. The basic approach of these studies is to choose trading rules based on an genetic optmisation procedure using in-sample-data and then testing the performance of there rules in out-of-the-sample data. This paper tests whether the most popular technical rule-the moving average- generates profits in the Madrid Stock Exchange by utilizing genetic algorithms to optimise the rule in the in-sample period (May 1990-May 1995)and applying it to the out-sample period (May 1995-May 1996) over 25 stocks and indexes. We report the lack of utility, even before transaction costs, of this popular technical rule.

Book Candlestick Forecasting for Investments

Download or read book Candlestick Forecasting for Investments written by Haibin Xie and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2021-03-11 with total page 133 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Candlestick charts are often used in speculative markets to describe and forecast asset price movements. This book is the first of its kind to investigate candlestick charts and their statistical properties. It provides an empirical evaluation of candlestick forecasting. The book proposes a novel technique to obtain the statistical properties of candlestick charts. The technique, which is known as the range decomposition technique, shows how security price is approximately logged into two ranges, i.e. technical range and Parkinson range. Through decomposition-based modeling techniques and empirical datasets, the book investigates the power of, and establishes the statistical foundation of, candlestick forecasting.

Book The Oxford Handbook of Computational Economics and Finance

Download or read book The Oxford Handbook of Computational Economics and Finance written by Shu-Heng Chen and published by Oxford University Press. This book was released on 2018 with total page 785 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Oxford Handbook of Computational Economics and Finance provides a survey of both the foundations of and recent advances in the frontiers of analysis and action. It is both historically and interdisciplinarily rich and also tightly connected to the rise of digital society. It begins with the conventional view of computational economics, including recent algorithmic development in computing rational expectations, volatility, and general equilibrium. It then moves from traditional computing in economics and finance to recent developments in natural computing, including applications of nature-inspired intelligence, genetic programming, swarm intelligence, and fuzzy logic. Also examined are recent developments of network and agent-based computing in economics. How these approaches are applied is examined in chapters on such subjects as trading robots and automated markets. The last part deals with the epistemology of simulation in its trinity form with the integration of simulation, computation, and dynamics. Distinctive is the focus on natural computationalism and the examination of the implications of intelligent machines for the future of computational economics and finance. Not merely individual robots, but whole integrated systems are extending their "immigration" to the world of Homo sapiens, or symbiogenesis.

By identifying trends, moving averages allow traders to make those trends work in their favor and increase the number of winning trades. I hope that by reading this book you will have a clear understanding of why moving averages are important, how they are calculated and how you can incorporate them into your trading strategies.

Book Genetic Algorithms in Applications

Download or read book Genetic Algorithms in Applications written by Rustem Popa and published by BoD – Books on Demand. This book was released on 2012-03-21 with total page 332 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Genetic Algorithms (GAs) are one of several techniques in the family of Evolutionary Algorithms - algorithms that search for solutions to optimization problems by "evolving" better and better solutions. Genetic Algorithms have been applied in science, engineering, business and social sciences. This book consists of 16 chapters organized into five sections. The first section deals with some applications in automatic control, the second section contains several applications in scheduling of resources, and the third section introduces some applications in electrical and electronics engineering. The next section illustrates some examples of character recognition and multi-criteria classification, and the last one deals with trading systems. These evolutionary techniques may be useful to engineers and scientists in various fields of specialization, who need some optimization techniques in their work and who may be using Genetic Algorithms in their applications for the first time. These applications may be useful to many other people who are getting familiar with the subject of Genetic Algorithms.

Book Technical Analysis of Stock Trends

Download or read book Technical Analysis of Stock Trends written by Robert D. Edwards and published by CRC Press. This book was released on 2012-11-28 with total page 616 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Sixty-three years. Sixty-three years and Technical Analysis of Stock Trends still towers over the discipline of technical analysis like a mighty redwood. Originally published in 1948 and now in its Tenth Edition, this book remains the original and most important work on this topic. The book contains more than dry chart patterns, it passes down accumulated experience and wisdom from Dow to Schabacker, to Edwards, and to Magee, and has been modernized by W.H.C. Bassetti. Bassetti, a client, friend, and student of John Magee, one of the original authors, has converted the material on the craft of manual charting with TEKNIPLAT chart paper to modern computer software methods. In actuality, none of Magee’s concepts have proven invalid and some of his work predated modern concepts such as beta and volatility. In addition, Magee described a trend-following procedure that is so simple and so elegant that Bassetti has adapted it to enable the general investor to use it to replace the cranky Dow Theory. This procedure, called the Basing Points procedure, is extensively described in the new Tenth Edition along with new material on powerful moving average systems and Leverage Space Portfolio Model generously contributed by the formidable analyst, Ralph Vince., author of Handbook of Portfolio Mathematics. See what’s new in the Tenth Edition: Chapters on replacing Dow Theory Update of Dow Theory Record Deletion of extraneous material on manual charting New chapters on Stops and Basing Points New material on moving average systems New material on Ralph Vince’s Leverage Space Portfolio Model So much has changed since the first edition, yet so much has remained the same. Everyone wants to know how to play the game. The foundational work of the discipline of technical analysis, this book gives you more than a technical formula for trading and investing, it gives you the knowledge and wisdom to craft long-term success.
