Book The Sportsman s British Bird Book Classic Reprint

Download or read book The Sportsman s British Bird Book Classic Reprint written by R. Lydekker and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2016-12-22 with total page 652 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Sportsman's British Bird Book The illustrations, which speak for themselves, are absolutely true to nature, having, in the great majority of instances, been photographed under the personal superintendence of Mr. Rowland Ward from specimens mounted at his studios in Piccadilly for this particular purpose. A considerable number of these specimens have been pre sented by Mr. Ward to the Natural History Museum, where they are exhibited in the British Saloon at the end of the Bird Gallery. A novel feature is the omission of the names of authorities and Observers of the facts recorded in this volume, many of whom are unknown to the general public. This is justified by the circum stance that when a statement has once been published it becomes public property. In certain books on the same subject it has been attempted to draw a distinction between birds which can properly be regarded as British and those which cannot lay a claim to such a privilege. Any such distinction is, however, manifestly an impossibility, and all the species are accordingly treated in serial order, although such as are mere stragglers are not accorded insets of their own in the text. The introduction of a certain number of technical terms relating to the plumage, such as wing-coverts, primary and secondary quills, etc., is unavoidable. The meaning of these - as well as of other terms used in scientific ornithology - will, however, be made apparent at a glance by the diagrammatic sketch of the topography of a bird's plumage on page xviii. In future editions, should such be called for, it will be the special aim of both the publisher and author to keep the work up to date. This enhanced epub version of the fourth edition of the book – featuring songs and calls – is set to change birding, forever. Optimised for tablets, it features the Handbook in crisp, clear high-resolution. Its pages contain 1,200 colour illustrations, plus seven comparison spreads, with comprehensive text on identification, habitats, food, breeding and conservation, and accurate range maps. In addition, the epub edition features songs, calls and other sounds from each species, making this the ultimate one-stop resources for anyone interested in identifying and learning more about the birds they see. This collection of images and sounds represents a step change in the way birdwatchers operate. No more carrying heavy books into the field; no more trying to remember sounds days later, while all other methods for taking sounds into the field are consigned to the dustbin. The RSPB Handbook of British Birds e-book provides a complete field-based ID solution – no birdwatcher will want to be without it. (Note: Audio may not play on all devices. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Game Birds and Wild Fowl of the British Islands: Being a Handbook for the Naturalist and Sportsman Every naturalist may not be a sportsman, but there are certainly very few sportsmen that are not, or do not eventually become, ardent naturalists. The habit and economy of birds are specially the naturalist's own province; but then, on the other hand, no sportsman worthy of the name is indifferent to the life-history of the birds and beasts that are the object of his chase. A man who would be a successful sportsman must be familiar with the ways of the creatures that furnish his sport; not only so, the constant chase of bird and beast, in nine cases out of ten, creates a desire for knowledge, and a wish to know something more of their economy. The present volume has been written with the object of furnishing the naturalist and sportsman with concise yet fairly complete, and I hope accurate, information respecting the Game Birds and Wild Fowl of the British Islands, and their allied races and species in other parts of the world. I have sought to bring this information up to date, not only by including several species new to our avi-fauna, but by dealing with these birds from an evolutionary point of view, and according to modern ideas on and recent discoveries in that particular branch of natural knowledge which is embraced by Darwinian Ornithology. Hence it has been my constant care to discard insular and narrow study, which only too often leads to pedantry and error, and to treat the birds incorporated in the following pages on broad, evolutionary lines, and from a more cosmopolitan point of view.
