Book Betrayal of the Spirit

Download or read book Betrayal of the Spirit written by Nori J. Muster and published by University of Illinois Press. This book was released on 1997 with total page 260 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Combining behind-the-scenes views of an often besieged religious group with a personal account of the author's struggle to find meaning in it, Betrayal of the Spirit takes the reader closer than any other source so far to the reality of life in the Hare Krishna movement. Nori J. Muster, a California native, joined the International Society of Krishna Consciousness (ISKON) - the Hare Krishnas - in 1977, shortly after the death of the movement's spiritual master, Srila A. C. Bhaktivedanta Swami Prabhupada. She lived in the Krishnas' western world headquarters in Los Angeles and worked for ten years as a public relations secretary and editor of the organization's newspaper, the ISKON World Review. Her story of the Hare Krishnas' decline is a gripping presentation of facts gleaned from personal reminiscences, published articles, and internal documents. Betrayal of the Spirit details drug dealing, weapons stockpiling, deceptive fund-raising, child abuse, and murder within ISKON, as well as the dynamics of schisms that forced some 95 percent of the group's original members to leave. Although the movement fell into disarray after the death of its founder, the author's story is one of a continual search for truth and religious meaning as an ISKON member. Muster's account of the scandal-plagued decade following Swami Prabhupada's death ends in 1988 when, disillusioned over the continuing internal strife and scandals, she left her job and the movement.

Book excerpt: "Hare Krishna Ghosh, the only living son of Paramhansa Yogananda's brother, Sananda Lal Ghosh, was born in Calcutta at 4 Garpar Road, where Yogananda lived from the time he was 12 until he met his guru, Swami Sri Yukteswar. After ten years of training in his guru's hermitage, Yogananda left India for America in 1920 to begin his life's mission: demonstrating to truth seekers around the world the essential oneness of the religions of East and West. In 1935 Yogananda returned to India to be reunited for a time with his guru, his beloved father and other family members, and his friends and disciples. It was during this visit that Hare Krishna, age 15, met him for the first time. That meeting, and the subsequent months spent with the master, changed Hare Krishna's life forever. We met Hare Krishna and his wife, Anjali, on our first pilgrimage to India in 1986, when they graciously hosted us in their home. It was our pleasure then also to meet their son, Somnath, and their daughter, Papia, both of whom are married and have children of their own. On first entering the house where our guru lived and where, he later stated, "I found God," we could feel his vibrations everywhere-as a small boy running up and down the staircases, laughing and playing pranks on his sisters and brothers; as a young man diving deeper and deeper into God-communion; as an avatar for this age. For any of you who find yourselves longing to go to India to experience Yogananda's presence there, we highly recommend that you go to Hare Krishna's home at 4 Garpar Road. Their doors are always open: for meditating in Yogananda's attic room, talking with the family, or just quietly soaking in the spiritual vibrations that are felt throughout the house. In the following pages Hare Krishna has very beautifully described many of his experiences with Yogananda, in his unique relationship to him as uncle and guru. We hope that you will find the same inspiration and joy we have felt in reading these glimpses into Yogananda's life, and into the deep effect he had on all those around him"--

Book excerpt: Servant of the Lotus Feet: A Hare Krishna Odyssey is the true story of an adolescent's quest for spiritual meaning. Enchanted by the wisdom of the Orient, Sidd drops out of his freshman year of college in the early 1980's to join the Hare Krishnas while visiting Boston. During the course of four years in New England and New York City, Sidd struggles as a fund-raiser for the cult. As an initiated Brahman priest, he gains privilege and responsibility. Sidd's innocent question posed to the spiritual master in a room of hundreds of curious guests and devoted followers shakes the foundations of the temple walls, engaging the "holy man's" wrath. Disillusioned by the contradictions and deceits perpetrated by the elders of the Indian religious cult, including his and other allegedly "pure" spiritual masters, Sidd gradually backs out of the movement. While visiting his family for a holiday reunion, Sidd is abducted and compelled to review the facts about the religious cult he had embraced.

Book A World History of Higher Education Exchange

Download or read book A World History of Higher Education Exchange written by Teresa Brawner Bevis and published by Springer. This book was released on 2019-04-11 with total page 343 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book examines the origins of higher learning, and then traces education exchange to the aftermath of World War II, when the United States was internationally recognized as the epicenter of critical thinking and scientific discovery. As centers of learning arose in the ancient world, the gathering of students they drew invariably included “foreigners”—those not native to the immediate local area. Then as now, inquisitive minds compelled humans to explore, crossing borders to seek enlightenment in faraway places before returning to their homelands. Few societies have been so remote that they could not be affected by the acquisition of imported information. The number of international students and scholars in the United States now exceeds one million. This book narrates the complex and colorful history of intrepid individuals, inspired programs, and world events that have given direction to the path of education exchange, as well as the global dissemination of American scholarship.

Book A History of Science in World Cultures

Download or read book A History of Science in World Cultures written by Scott L. Montgomery and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2015-06-12 with total page 350 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: To understand modern science, it is essential to recognize that many of the most fundamental scientific principles are drawn from the knowledge of ancient civilizations. Taking a global yet comprehensive approach to this complex topic, A History of Science in World Cultures uses a broad range of case studies and examples to demonstrate that the scientific thought and method of the present day is deeply rooted in a pluricultural past. Covering ancient Egypt, Mesopotamia, India, Greece, China, Islam, and the New World, this volume discusses the scope of scientific and technological achievements in each civilization and how the knowledge it developed came to impact the European Renaissance. Themes covered include the influence these scientific cultures had upon one another, the power of writing and its technologies, visions of mathematical order in the universe and how it can be represented, and what elements of the distant scientific past we continue to depend upon today. Topics often left unexamined in histories of science are treated in fascinating detail, such as the chemistry of mummification and the Great Library in Alexandria in Egypt, jewellery and urban planning of the Indus Valley, hydraulic engineering and the compass in China, the sustainable agriculture and dental surgery of the Mayas, and algebra and optics in Islam. This book shows that scientific thought has never been confined to any one era, culture, or geographic region. Clearly presented and highly illustrated, A History of Science in World Cultures is the perfect text for all students and others interested in the development of science throughout history.
