He must be something of a prophet that he may take in all his country's long life, and not be misled by too narrow a study of her present condition. Such a patriot was Christ. He could not be deluded by enormous stores and stately structures so long as the heart of Jerusalem was selfish and corrupt. He could not be satisfied with the peace and quiet of the moment while His ears heard afar off the thunder of the coming storm. It was the poet and the prophet in His soul that loved His city, and so He could upbraid her as no other of her children could. He has a certain intel lectual and moral likeness to God; and by cultivation and discipline this likeness may be advanced till his thought and will reflect, in some measure, the thought and will of God, and all his movements and desires are in the direction of God. He may yield his whole nature - all his powers and faculties - up to the guid ance of God, and the current of an exalted fellow ship may flow back and forth between his heart and the heart Of God. Having fallen out of this fellow ship, and lost this divine life, through sin, he may yet find it again through faith in the Son of God, who came into the world for the express purpose of renewing men dead in trespasses and sins, and re storing the marred image in which they were made. He may have inward witness that God is his Father, and that he is God's child. He may know and eh joy God. These are general statements covering the case. In the earlier volume, the author aimed to address the human conscience. In this, he would speak to the Christian heart. The former supposed original and unpardoned sin, and endeavored to produce the consciousness of it. The latter supposes forgiven and indwelling sin, and would aid in the struggle and victory over it. The writer has had evidence, both from this country and from abroad, that theological sermonizing and the close application of truth are not so unwelcome and unpopular, as they are sometimes represented to be. This encourages him to hope that the present volume, which takes a wider range, and brings to view the experiences and aspirations of the regenerate believer, may find a yet larger class of sympathetic readers. At the same time, the author is well aware that both volumes are out of all keeping with some existing tendencies in the religious world. But these tendencies are destined to disappear, whenever the blind guides shall cease to lead the blind, and honest self-knowledge shall take the place of self-flattery and religious delusion. That this will happen, is as certain as that the Holy Spirit has not forsaken the world for which God incarnate died, but will, in His own way, again search and illumine the human soul, as in "the times of refreshing from the presence of the Lord."
