Book The Spirit of the East Vol 2 of 2 Classic Reprint

Download or read book The Spirit of the East Vol 2 of 2 Classic Reprint written by David Urquhart and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-11-04 with total page 458 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Spirit of the East, Vol. 2 of 2 When our siesta was over, and when the sun had already set behind our lofty horizon, we mounted and proceeded towards Rapsana. After skirting the lake, we turned to the left, over a low hill, and descended into a deep glen, or lac, Opening to the sea. We could not see it; but a sea-scented breeze came winding through the hills. Here we came upon a party of villagers, who had just killed a wild boar. It was with great difficulty that we got away from them, for they insisted on our spending the night at their village, and ran over the bill of fare to which we should be treated. First, there was the boar, appealing directly to our senses with eloquence in ruby tints, and rhetoric in rounded forms; then there were kids, still tender, that had just returned from Olympus;* venison. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: New Softcover Edition with Index! Considered by Ratzinger devotees as his greatest work on the Liturgy, this profound and beautifully written treatment of the "great prayer of the Church" will help readers rediscover the Liturgy in all its hidden spiritual wealth and transcendent grandeur as the very center of our Christian life. Among the many liturgical issues that he covers in this work, Cardinal Ratzinger discusses fundamental misunderstandings of the Second Vatican Council's intentions for liturgical renewal, especially the orientation of prayer at the Eucharistic sacrifice, the placement of the tabernacle, and the posture of kneeling. Other important topics he discusses include the following: the essence of worship; Jewish roots and new elements of the Christian Liturgy; the historic and cosmic dimensions of the Liturgy; the relationship of the Liturgy to time and space; art, music, and the Liturgy; active participation of all the faithful; gestures, posture, and vestments. "My purpose here is to assist this renewal of understanding of the Liturgy. Its basic intentions coincide with what Guardini wanted to achieve. The only difference is that I have had to translate what Guardini did at the end of the First World War, in a totally different historical situation, into the context of our present-day questions, hopes, and dangers. Like Guardini, I am not attempting to involve myself with scholarly discussion and research. I am simply offering an aid to the understanding of the faith and to the right way to give the faith its central form of expression in the Liturgy." - Joseph Cardinal Ratzinger, from the preface

Download or read book Sisters in Spirit written by Andreana C. Prichard and published by MSU Press. This book was released on 2017-05-01 with total page 308 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In this pioneering study, historian Andreana Prichard presents an intimate history of a single mission organization, the Universities’ Mission to Central Africa (UMCA), told through the rich personal stories of a group of female African lay evangelists. Founded by British Anglican missionaries in the 1860s, the UMCA worked among refugees from the Indian Ocean slave trade on Zanzibar and among disparate communities on the adjacent Tanzanian mainland. Prichard illustrates how the mission’s unique theology and the demographics of its adherents produced cohorts of African Christian women who, in the face of linguistic and cultural dissimilarity, used the daily performance of a certain set of “civilized” Christian values and affective relationships to evangelize to new inquirers. The UMCA’s “sisters in spirit” ultimately forged a united spiritual community that spanned discontiguous mission stations across Tanzania and Zanzibar, incorporated diverse ethnolinguistic communities, and transcended generations. Focusing on the emotional and personal dimensions of their lives and on the relationships of affective spirituality that grew up among them, Prichard tells stories that are vital to our understanding of Tanzanian history, the history of religion and Christian missions in Africa, the development of cultural nationalisms, and the intellectual histories of African women.

Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Spirit of the East, Vol. 1 of 2: Illustrated in a Journal of Travels; Through of During an Eventful Period No traveller offers a work to the public without supposing that he has some new facts or ideas to communicate, or some erroneous statements or opinions in the works of his predecessors to correct. If this is true with reference to countries that are at our doors, and with the language, institutions, and customs of which we are perfectly familiar, it must be far more applicable to countries at a distance, with manners and institutions dissimilar to our own; with whose language we never are acquainted; of whose literature we know nothing; with whose society we never mingle; between whose inhabitants and the natives of our own country, friendship seldom or never exists.
