Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Spirit of Military Institutions The judicious choice of strategic points 'and lines is the safety of armies in reverses, and the cause of the greatest results in successes. Napoleon particularly possessed the genius of strategy; no general has ever surpassed him in this respect; none knew better, beforehand, how to find the point where it was necessary to strike. A large army is composed of several columns; they are necessarily separated in order to subsist and to move with facility. The most dis tant parts should be able to arrive in time for the battle, either to take part in the conflict, or to serve merely as a reserve. The object of strategy is to regulate the march for the promptest reunion upon the same point, be it at the centre or upon one of the wings. A march thus regulated is what Napoleon was in the habit of calling his chess-board. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Universal Military Service and Democracy It is natural that in the staff of the army not only younger active officers, but likewise experienced strategists, should feel the need of turning to account the efficiency of the troops led by them, and their own capacity to lead, and of making them prominent in history. It would be a matter of regret if this effect of the military spirit did not exist in the army; the task of keeping its results within such limits at the nations need of peace can justly claim, is the duty of the political, not the mili tary, heads of the state. Book Oak Ridge Military Institute 1937 Classic Reprint

Download or read book Oak Ridge Military Institute 1937 Classic Reprint written by Oak Ridge Military Institute and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-09-09 with total page 24 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Oak Ridge Military Institute, 1937 The military school is productive of the best type of scholarship. The well-ordered time schedule and the practice of performing every duty with promptness and precision are conducive to the formation of good mental habits. The military system makes easy the enforcement of the regulation that students must spend a certain definite portion of each day in study. It reduces discipline to a routine, thus enabling both teacher and student to devote their attention to the day's work. The military school develops the moral and spiritual side of the cadet's life by helping to build up in him those qualities which make for good citizenship. The rigorous discipline and training teach respect for law, obedience to authority, self-control, and a sense of responsibility for conduct. Military training breaks down class distinction, eliminates snobbishness, broadens the vision, makes our civilization democratic, teaches the patriotism of service and obedience to law, and removes the danger of national disintegration. Oak Ridge Military Institute is essentially military, a junior unit of the U. S. Reserve Officers Training Corps, with all military activities under the direction and supervision of U. S. Army officers detailed by the War Department. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from State Military Academies: An Address Delivered Before the Calliopean Society of the Citadel Academy, Charleston It is the part of each individual legislator to feel as the Prussian counsellor has written, that in every poor man's son, there was a being who would complain of him before God, if he did not provide for him the best education possible. In the light of these general truths, I invite your atten tion to an exposition of the nature and tendencies of that system of education which South Carolina has authorized in the establishment of her State Military Academies. Book The Soul and Body of an Army Classic Reprint

Download or read book The Soul and Body of an Army Classic Reprint written by Ian Hamilton and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-03-22 with total page 328 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Soul and Body of an Army The Armies thus differ more typically than their nation, but where an Army is based upon voluntary service it may be conceded that it represents that part of the nation which has responded to a high appeal, and in so responding has left the residue below par. Our British Army was the pick of the nation (speaking broadly), and the balance (still speaking broadly) consisted of its leavings. The whole of the young virility of town and country-side flows into the ranks, and so, in war, an Army becomes dominant to the civilian crowd left at home, who are, in Mendelian phrase, recessive. The impact of the opinion of a Victoriously returning Army upon the people who had remained behind should produce the same result as the impact of a black bull upon a red heifer: i.e. The black or dominant colour should appear in the calf, or post-war policy, although that calf may carry in it the factors, the germs, the potentialities, of reasserting in time to come a recessive character or colour.
