Book The Spirit of Tolerance in Islam

Download or read book The Spirit of Tolerance in Islam written by Reza Shah-Kazemi and published by Bloomsbury Publishing. This book was released on 2012-01-27 with total page 199 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In 1932, the eminent British scholar of Islam, Sir Hamilton Gibb, wrote: "The nobility and broad tolerance of this religion [Islam], which accepted all the real religions of the world as God-inspired, will always be a glorious heritage for mankind. No other society has such a record of success in uniting, in an equality of status, of opportunity, and of endeavor, so many and so various races of humanity." (Whither Islam?) Such scholarly objectivity towards the tolerance which has historically characterized the Islamic tradition as a whole is in short supply these days. Through an insidious symbiosis of fanatical Muslims and prejudiced Islamophobes, the very opposite image of Islam has emerged as one of the most dangerous stereotypes of our times. The most cursory glance at history will not only reveal the falsity of this stereotype of an intolerant Islam, it will also reveal the little known fact that, not so long ago, it was the Islamic world that provided models of tolerant conduct for a fanatically intolerant Christian world tearing itself apart over dogmatic differences. The first part of this monograph examines the historical record of tolerance in the Islamic tradition, illustrating the expression of the principle of tolerance through the rule of such dynasties as the Ottomans, Mughals, Fatimids, and the Umayyads of Spain. In the second, the principle of tolerance is shown to be rooted in the spirit of the Qur'anic revelation and embodied in the exemplary conduct of the Prophet.

Reza Safa, openly talks about the spirit of Islam from an insider's point of view. Safa is well-versed in the laws and history of Islam. Radical Muslims claim to believe that the Bible is untrue, eternal life is only attained by sacrifice in a holy war and that Christians are naïve and weak in their beliefs. He explains that they seem to have a lust for martyrdom and their lives are lived in fear of their god, Allah. Book The House of Islam

Download or read book The House of Islam written by Ed Husain and published by Bloomsbury Publishing USA. This book was released on 2018-06-19 with total page 343 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: “Ed Husain has become one of the most vital Muslim voices in the world. The House of Islam could very well be his magnum opus.” -Reza Aslan, #1 New York Times bestselling author of Zealot “This should be compulsory reading.” -Peter Frankopan, author of the international bestseller The Silk Roads Today, Islam is to many in the West an alien force, with Muslims held in suspicion. Failure to grasp the inner workings of religion and geopolitics has haunted American foreign policy for decades and has been decisive in the new administration's controversial orders. The intricacies and shadings must be understood by the West not only to build a stronger, more harmonious relationship between the two cultures, but also for greater accuracy in predictions as to how current crises, such as the growth of ISIS, will develop and from where the next might emerge. The House of Islam addresses key questions and points of disconnection. What are the roots of the conflict between Sunni and Shi'a Muslims that is engulfing Pakistan and the Middle East? Does the Koran encourage the killing of infidels? The book thoughtfully explores the events and issues that have come from and contributed to the broadening gulf between Islam and the West, from the United States' overthrow of Iran's first democratically elected leader to the emergence of ISIS, from the declaration of a fatwa on Salman Rushdie to the attack on the offices of Charlie Hebdo. Authoritative and engaging, Ed Husain leads us clearly and carefully through the nuances of Islam and its people, taking us back to basics to contend that the Muslim world need not be a stranger to the West, nor our enemy, but our peaceable allies.

Book A Battle for the Soul of Islam

Download or read book A Battle for the Soul of Islam written by M. Zuhdi Jasser and published by Simon and Schuster. This book was released on 2012-06-05 with total page 291 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Among the unsettling social shifts in the wake of 9/11 was the global attention paid to Islam. Here in the United States, we became divided, often sadly along partisan lines, between those who believed every Muslim was a potential threat and those who believed no Muslim could do wrong. For conservative Wisconsin native and former U.S. Navy Lieutenant Commander Dr. M. Zuhdi Jasser, these radical times meant facing a new reality as a devout Muslim and a patriot—a certain betrayal within his faith, and a need to answer a question that crossed the minds of even the most sensitive and politically correct: “Can a good Muslim be a good American as well?” Jasser founded the American Islamic Forum for Democracy (AIFD) to instill in young American Muslims an appreciation for the distinctively positive impact that this nation’s ideals of liberty have had upon the world. As a nationally recognized expert on Muslim radicalization, he offers non-Muslims a definitive comprehension of the difference between Islam and the spiritual cancer known as Islamism, or political Islam, and how violence and extremism run counter to Islam’s true teachings. As he persuasively argues, until we acknowledge the threat of Islamism in all its forms, the majority of Americans will be gulled into recognizing only the most obvious: terrorism. In A Battle for the Soul of Islam, Jasser embraces both his faith and his country while asking hard questions: * Are American Muslim children learning entitlement as victims, or are they being taught individual responsibility and critical thinking? * Are poisonous conspiracy theories dividing their American identity, or are they gaining exposure to reason, nationalism, and patriotism? * Are Muslims publicly critical of the Islamist movements of the Middle East, or do they remain silent on aspects of religious doctrine that conflict with modernity and universal equality? * Is the American press downplaying the seditious threat of homegrown Islamist radicalism and the influence of Islamists’ propaganda arm on our governmental policies? * Is our culture of political correctness a major obstacle toward long-overdue Muslim reform against Islamism? All these years after 9/11, it’s time for us to understand the true threat of Islamism. It is a Muslim problem that needs a Muslim solution, and A Battle for the Soul of Islam builds a solid, balanced, and imperative must-read foundation for the fight.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: “A theoretically sophisticated reading of the mediation of social and spiritual relationships in Fez.” —Gregory Starrett, University of North Carolina at Charlotte The sacred calls that summon believers are the focus of this study of religion and power in Fez, Morocco. Focusing on how dissemination of the call through mass media has transformed understandings of piety and authority, Emilio Spadola details the new importance of once-marginal Sufi practices such as spirit trance and exorcism for ordinary believers, the state, and Islamist movements. The Calls of Islam offers new ethnographic perspectives on ritual, performance, and media in the Muslim world. “A superb demonstration of anthropological analysis at its best. A major contribution to our understanding of the complicated nexus of religion, nationalism, and technology.” —Charles Hirschkind, author of The Feeling of History “An instructive contribution to the literature on Morocco’s socio-cultural and political idiosyncrasies.” —Review of Middle East Studies “Spadola’s dense but short study . . . manages admirably well to deal with a complex topic, skillfully balancing ethnographic and analytic elements.” —American Ethnologist “[The] tension between social classes is subtly drawn out throughout this exemplary book, and Spadola also does a magnificent job tying local, national, and transnational contexts together. Although writing about a very specific place and time, he manages to capture post-millennial anxieties about Islam and belonging that are far reaching in their scope.” —Contemporary Islam “Spadola’s book is theoretically sophisticated, skillfully constructed, and rich in detail.” —Journal of Religion

Book The Challenge of Islam to Christians

Download or read book The Challenge of Islam to Christians written by David Pawson and published by Anchor. This book was released on 2022-02-11 with total page 195 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Challenge of Islam to Christians is David Pawson's most important and perhaps his most sobering - prophetic message to date. Moral decline and erosion of a sense of ultimate truth have created a spiritual vacuum in the United Kingdom. Pawson believes Islam is better equipped than the Church to move into that gap and it is far more likely to become the country's dominant religion in the future. This book unpacks and explains the background behind Pawson's claims. and - crucially - sets out a positive blueprint for the Church's response. Christians must rediscover and demonstrate to society the three qualities that make Christianity unique: Reality. Relationship and Righteousness. This book is essential reading for all Christians.

Book A Wind in the House of Islam

Download or read book A Wind in the House of Islam written by V. David Garrison and published by Wigtake Resources LLC. This book was released on 2014 with total page 314 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A Wind in the House of Islam investigates the phenomenon of millions of Muslims who are turning to faith in Jesus Christ today. Over the course of Islamic history tens of millions of Christians were absorbed into the House of Islam. But what about the opposite? Have there ever been movements of Muslim communities who voluntarily turned to Jesus Christ and were baptized? The first 13 centuries of Islam's history saw only three movements numbering at least a thousand Muslims turning to Christianity, apart from those that were coerced through wars, Crusades and Inquisitions. Today, the story is changing. Over the past two decades there have been 69 additional movements of Muslims to Christ scattered across the Muslim world from West Africa to Indonesia. In an unprecedented global survey, Dr. David Garrison, Ph.D. University of Chicago, traveled a quarter-million miles throughout the House of Islam to find out why and how this is happening today. His research took him into every corner of the Muslim world where he gathered more than a thousand interviews of Muslim-background followers of Jesus Christ. His core question: What did God use to bring you to faith in Jesus Christ? A Wind in the House of Islam reveals their stories, and David Garrison's journey through all nine Rooms in the House of Islam, where he discovered that the Wind of God's Spirit is blowing through every one of them. A Wind in the House of Islam is a 328-page book written in an engaging style, but also includes a glossary of Islamic terms, a bibliography for further reading, endnotes, 11 maps with data tables of Muslim populations, 46 photographs, and excerpts from more than a thousand interviews. Each of the book's 15 chapters conclude with discussion questions to facilitate small group dialogue and discovery. Learn more about the book at: www.WindintheHouse.org

  • ISBN : 1973630087
  • Pages : 244 pages

Download or read book The Islamic Inversion written by Robert Sievers and published by WestBow Press. This book was released on 2018-06-22 with total page 244 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Any endeavor to lead Muslims to Christ comes with its own unique frustrations. Attempts to get Muslims into Gods Word often seem to go nowhere. Islam generates a steady stream of barricades and firewalls that systematically thwart efforts to share the good news of Jesus Christ. Ironically enough, the hidden opportunities to lead Muslims to Christ may actually be found in the very assaults Muslims make on core Christian doctrines. Islamic theology conforms to a certain pattern of spiritual reversal when contrasted against sound Christian doctrine. By recognizing these patterns, Christians can find new ways to interact with Muslims in a manner that is nonconfrontational without denying the exclusivity and power of the gospel. With prayer and love, the follower of Christ may use these antiparellels, or inversions, to find a unique and peculiar avenue to share the good news with Muslims.
