Book excerpt: Seminar paper from the year 2009 in the subject Didactics for the subject English - Literature, Works, , language: English, abstract: Fielding is often considered one of the most significant contributors to the development of the English novel. His nearly seamless incorporation of drama, satire, romance, and epic into his works helped distinguish the novel as a new and unique genre quite distinct from its early influences. Fielding's long and bitter feud with rival novelist Samuel Richardson also contributed to the development of the novel form: opposed to the didactic tone and unrealistic characters and situations of his contemporaries, Fielding infused the novel with compassion, comedy, and a heightened sense of realism. His comic sense is deep and sometimes under it very serious themes may appear. Although Fielding's lasting reputation rests on his major novels, he was also a popular and important playwright, an influential journalist, and one of England's leading judicial reformers. In all of his writing, Fielding demonstrated a concern with social and moral hypocrisy, attacking not only Richardson but also dramatist and Poet Laureate Colley Cibber and Prime Minister Robert Walpole for what he considered their failure to deal openly with serious social issues, whether in literary works or as a government official. Nowadays his novels and his humor became popular again and in this work author is going to look deeply in one of the comic literary works”The History of Tom Jones, a Foundling”.

Book Approaches to Teaching the Novels of Henry Fielding

Download or read book Approaches to Teaching the Novels of Henry Fielding written by Jennifer Preston Wilson and published by Modern Language Association. This book was released on 2015-12-01 with total page 256 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The works of Henry Fielding, though written nearly three hundred years ago, retain their sense of comedy and innovation in the face of tradition, and they easily engage the twenty-first-century student with many aspects of eighteenth-century life: travel, inns, masquerades, political and religious factions, the '45, prisons and the legal system, gender ideals and realities, social class. Part 1 of this volume, "Materials," discusses the available editions of Joseph Andrews, Tom Jones, Shamela, Jonathan Wild, and Amelia; suggests useful critical and contextual works for teaching them; and recommends helpful audiovisual and electronic resources. The essays of part 2, "Approaches," demonstrate that many of the methods and models used for one novel--the romance tradition, Fielding's legal and journalistic writing, his techniques as a playwright, the ideas of Machiavelli--can be adapted to others.

Book excerpt: This study offers a fresh introduction to the achievement of Henry Fielding (1707-1754) as dramatist, journalist and novelist. In his day Fielding was always a centre of controversy, attacked as 'immoral', yet praised for his 'realistic' portrayal of contemporary society and his attack on hypocrisy and exploitation. Jenny Uglow sets Fielding in the light of recent critical debates and places him in the context of his age; identifying central ideas on judgement, mercy and benevolence, tracing the development of his craft and clarifying his ideas on comedy and the role of the novel, particularly his rivalry with Samuel Richardson. Readings of key works - Tom Jones, Shamela, Joseph Andrews, Jonathan Wild and Amelia - are enriched by studies of his drama and of lesser known works such as A Journey from this World to the Next, and by reference to Fielding's essays, journalism, politics and work as a pioneering magistrate in London. Fielding emerges as a writer of startling originality, constantly adaptin

Book The History of the Adventures of Joseph Andrews and of His Friend Mr Abraham Adams

Download or read book The History of the Adventures of Joseph Andrews and of His Friend Mr Abraham Adams written by Henry Fielding and published by Oxford University Press, USA. This book was released on 1999 with total page 472 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: 'I beg as soon as you get Fielding's Joseph Andrews, I fear in Ridicule of your Pamela and of Virtue in the Notion of Don Quixote's Manner, you would send it to me by the very first Coach.' (George Cheyne in a letter to Samuel Richardson, February 1742) Both Joseph Andrews (1742) and Shamela (1741) were prompted by the success of Richardson's Pamela (1740), of which Shamela is a splendidly bawdy parody. But in Shamela Fielding also demonstrates his concern for the corruption of contemporary society, politics, religion, morality, and taste. Thesame themes - together with a presentation of love as charity, as friendship, and in its sexual taste - are present in Joseph Andrews, Fielding's first novel. It is a work of considerable literary sophistication and satirical verve, but its appeal lies also in its spirit of comic affirmation, epitomized in the celebrated character of Parson Adams. This revised and expanded edition follows the text of Joseph Andrews established by Martin C. Battestin for the definitive Wesleyan Edition of Fielding's works. The text of Shamela is based on the first edition, and two substantial appendices reprint the preliminary matter from Conyers Middleton'sLife of Cicero and the second edition of Richardson's Pamela (both closely parodied in Shamela). A new introduction by Thomas Keymer situates Fielding's works in their critical and historical contexts.

Book The Plays of Henry Fielding

    Book Details:
  • Author : Albert J. Rivero
  • Publisher : University of Virginia Press
  • Release : 1989
  • ISBN : 9780813912288
  • Pages : 198 pages

Download or read book The Plays of Henry Fielding written by Albert J. Rivero and published by University of Virginia Press. This book was released on 1989 with total page 198 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Henry Fielding was one of the most interesting playwrights of his time because of his historical position, similar to that of George Bernard Shaw, and his awareness of what it meant to be a playwright at a time when the native dramatic tradition appeared to have settled down for a long sleep and when the only hope for an awakening lay in such low crowd-pleasers as farces, puppet shows, "laughing" tragedies, and ballad operas. By focusing on the plays themselves, Rivero tells the story of Fielding's dramatic career without burdening the reader with an exhaustive history of contemporary plays and playwrights. He provides us with a clear, critical account of Fielding's dramatic career in terms of trends in contemporary dramatic affairs that help to account for his artistic choices in individual plays.

Book Miscellanies by Henry Fielding Esq

Download or read book Miscellanies by Henry Fielding Esq written by Henry Fielding and published by Wesleyan University Press. This book was released on 1993-08 with total page 458 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Contains the fantasy, A Journey from This World to the Next, and two plays: the farce Eurydice, and The Wedding Day, a revision of an early intrigue comedy. Volume Three of Henry Fielding's Miscellanies, first published as a three-volume set in 1743, consists in its entirety of a major work of fiction, The History of the life of the Late Mr. Jonathan Wild the Great. Jonathan Wild takes its title from the 'thief-taker' and gangleader of that name who has hanged in 1725, but in Fielding's hands the history of Wild is transformed into a mock-historical work of sustained irony aimed at all who would be 'great men'. The general introduction to this edition sets the novel against its historical and biographical background and argues against the view, common and since the mid-nineteenth century, that it is a personal satire directed at the figure of Sir Robert Walpole. In both the general and the textual introductions, the editors also offer a fresh view on questions about the date and history of the work's composition. Full explanatory notes and commentary place Fielding's allusions and details in their contemporary context. As in previous volumes of the Wesleyan Edition, this provides a critical, unmodernized text, based on the Greg-Bowers 'Rationale of Copy-text'. The version is that of the first edition, with an appendix giving al variants in wording and presentation of the 1754 revision. In his introduction the textual editor lays out the rationale for his choice version. This volume also includes, for the first time in a modern edition, Fielding's list of subscribers to the Miscellanies, along with detailed biographical notes and an analysis of the subscription list by textual author.
