Book The Speech that I didn t give at my Father s Funeral

Download or read book The Speech that I didn t give at my Father s Funeral written by Alson Bhebe and published by Lulu.com. This book was released on 2020-01-14 with total page 90 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: When Dad passed away I was asked to offer a speech at his funeral on behalf of the surviving children. I had been nursing dad for about a month before his passing away. I had been on the road for over two days and two nights from Bloemfontein to Bulawayo for the burial. I was mentally and emotionally drained to summarize a proper speech that would have been a fair representation of I and my young brother's experience with Dad. I gave a very short speech. After the funeral, an auntie asked me whether we had a normal relationship with Dad. She was worried that since Dad was a pastor, maybe at home he remained a pastor - robbing us of an intimate father and sons relationship. This book is an answer to my aunt's inquiry. My physical and emotional state made impossible for me to say everything worth mentioning about Dad. This book is the complete version of what I was supposed to say.

Book Notes on Grief

Download or read book Notes on Grief written by Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie and published by Knopf. This book was released on 2021-05-11 with total page 44 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: From the globally acclaimed, best-selling novelist and author of We Should All Be Feminists, a timely and deeply personal account of the loss of her father: “With raw eloquence, Notes on Grief … captures the bewildering messiness of loss in a society that requires serenity, when you’d rather just scream. Grief is impolite ... Adichie’s words put welcome, authentic voice to this most universal of emotions, which is also one of the most universally avoided” (The Washington Post). Notes on Grief is an exquisite work of meditation, remembrance, and hope, written in the wake of Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie's beloved father’s death in the summer of 2020. As the COVID-19 pandemic raged around the world, and kept Adichie and her family members separated from one another, her father succumbed unexpectedly to complications of kidney failure. Expanding on her original New Yorker piece, Adichie shares how this loss shook her to her core. She writes about being one of the millions of people grieving this year; about the familial and cultural dimensions of grief and also about the loneliness and anger that are unavoidable in it. With signature precision of language, and glittering, devastating detail on the page—and never without touches of rich, honest humor—Adichie weaves together her own experience of her father’s death with threads of his life story, from his remarkable survival during the Biafran war, through a long career as a statistics professor, into the days of the pandemic in which he’d stay connected with his children and grandchildren over video chat from the family home in Abba, Nigeria. In the compact format of We Should All Be Feminists and Dear Ijeawele, Adichie delivers a gem of a book—a book that fundamentally connects us to one another as it probes one of the most universal human experiences. Notes on Grief is a book for this moment—a work readers will treasure and share now more than ever—and yet will prove durable and timeless, an indispensable addition to Adichie's canon.

Book Into the Stars

Download or read book Into the Stars written by Thomas James and published by Lulu.com. This book was released on 2010-04-15 with total page 267 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Is it better to have loved and lost or to have never loved at all? Let me explain. I just moved to New York City with my daughter, Arianna, to direct a play I had written to get over my ex, Derek. He left me ten years ago. Because of my friend, Sekoya, I have to smile at the images of how things should have gone between Derek and me.However, my move to the city wasn’t a complete mistake. If I hadn’t, I wouldn’t have met Angelo, the hunky father of Arianna’s classmate. He’s showing signs of interest, but I’d been badly hurt by Derek, I don’t know if I can trust someone with my heart again.I have to remember that he is not Derek, though. He’s kind, considerate, and…Did I mention attractive? Am I misreading his signs? Is he the man that will help me forget about Derek and love again? I’d love to believe that’s true, but I can’t help but feel that heartache is right around the corner. My name is Orlando. This is my story.

Book I Know A Way Out

Download or read book I Know A Way Out written by Katherine 'Cookie' Jones and published by Xlibris Corporation. This book was released on 2003-03-26 with total page 108 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: “I Know a Way Out” is an account of my life’s journey towards a sense of peace and fulfillment culminating in personal acceptance of a greater power that resides in all of us. Emphasizing issues relating to family, much of my work centers on my experiences and interactions in the household of my aunt and uncle after the deaths of my parents, six month apart. While I had a connection with my aunt, my relationship with my uncle posed numerous challenges as a result of his pattern of sexual abuse, beginning when I was a young child and lasting through my teen years. As I moved into my twenties, I began to find some measure of independence through my career path, but events took a downward turn when my uncle decided that I should move out of the home in which I was raised. Later, I describe starting a new life with my husband, Jay, but this association failed to provide the happiness that I desired. In concluding sections of “I Know a Way Out”, I portray the events of my present, depicting a new life with my “stranger” as well as the spiritual re-awakening that I experienced at the age of thirty-one. Although grounded on a level of despair and uncertainty, this narrative frequently injects a spirit of hope based on my personal faith. As a whole, I wish to inspire the reader by rendering the notion that spirituality will furnish the power to transcend the relative limitations that life may present.

Book Speechless

Download or read book Speechless written by James Button and published by Melbourne Univ. Publishing. This book was released on 2012-10-01 with total page 215 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: James Button spent a year writing speeches for Kevin Rudd. Before that, he reported on politics as a highly regarded journalist for Fairfax. But James also has politics in the blood: his father was the diminutive but larger-than-life Senator John Button, who was a minister in the Hawke and Keating governments. Growing up, James watched a roll-call of political luminaries debating the fate of the Labor Party. He saw great victories and defeats at close hand. He believes both his father and his family paid a heavy price for politics. Speechless is James' highly personal account of a year working in Canberra, seen from both the inside and the outside. It's told through his experience of Kevin Rudd's failure to tell his story, and how this helped destroy his prime ministership. It also reflects on how far the Labor Party has moved from the idealism and pragmatism of his father's generation. He ends on a note of hope for the Party's revival.

Book How Adam Smith Can Change Your Life

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "How the insights of an 18th century economist can help us live better in the 21st century. Adam Smith became famous for The Wealth of Nations, but the Scottish economist also cared deeply about our moral choices and behavior--the subjects of his other brilliant book, The Theory of Moral Sentiments (1759). Now, economist Russ Roberts shows why Smith's neglected work might be the greatest self-help book you've never read. Roberts explores Smith's unique and fascinating approach to fundamental questions such as: - What is the deepest source of human satisfaction? - Why do we sometimes swing between selfishness and altruism? - What's the connection between morality and happiness? Drawing on current events, literature, history, and pop culture, Roberts offers an accessible and thought-provoking view of human behavior through the lenses of behavioral economics and philosophy"--

Book THE AFTERGLOW OF SUNSET

Download or read book THE AFTERGLOW OF SUNSET written by GAO HUAIFEI and published by American Academic Press. This book was released on 2017-04-18 with total page 256 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: He was that naive boy like humble slope grass or a carefree little fish in the stream in the little mountain village which was isolated from the outside world of civilization then. Then he was suddenly brought into a curious city in the north of China by his father. Everything around him became a wonder and mystery. So he turned to be another silly boy who would like to sit alone by the city street to enjoy the passing automobiles. In a couple of years he learned to fend for himself while his father was out of town because of his work; a real home alone. During the following years of his growing-up, he also witnessed the breathtaking changes of his home nation as well as of his own life. For him happiness was actually ephemeral while emotional suffering had to be recuperated by the elapsing of time. This is what he learned from his experience: Never to be afraid of being shrouded in the darkness! He was always fascinated by the brilliant and mysterious clouds that were aflame in the sunset. Why? Because there would always be new hope beyond the afterglow of sunset.

Book excerpt: Mark Sternum, a professor who teaches spelling and grammar at Boston's McClintock College, is full of droll observations about the rules that govern our language, but he leads a diligent if somewhat detached life. Friends and family try to coax him into deeper involvement, yet he keeps even his lover at arm's length. He screens all incoming calls, including his eccentric sister's "word pictures" about the waning days of their comatose mother. One day, an African–American single mother who has failed the college's basic skills test for the last time accuses Mark of "prejudgism," and Mark is fired. Blown off course, he monitors the ensuing academic skirmish from a distance as his case makes national headlines, and turns his attention instead to the graceful rhythms of a small Shaker community. As the scrambled pieces of Mark's life and the simple ways of the Shakers begin to merge, Mark finds new beauty in his own maddening, blissful dependency on the people in his life. Funny and generous, Downing's seemingly effortless prose juxtaposes cunning portraits of academic functionaries weathering the age of political correctness with the people and values of the last Shaker families in America.

Book Society Without God

Download or read book Society Without God written by Phil Zuckerman and published by NYU Press. This book was released on 2010-06-07 with total page 237 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Are lawyers, by their very nature, agents of the state, of capital, of institutions of power? Or are there ways in which they can work constructively or transformatively for the disempowered, the working class, the underprivileged? Lawyers in a Postmodern World explores how lawyers actively create the forms of power which they and others deploy. Through engaging case studies, the book examines how lawyers work within and for powerful institutions and provides suggestions--both general and practical--for ways in which the practice of law can be made to work with and for the powerless. Individuals chapters address such subjects as the contradictions of radical law practice; legal work in South Africa; the economics and politics of negotiating justice; feminist legal scholarship and women's gendered lives; the overlapping worlds of law, business, and politics; theories of legal practice; and how lawyers are constitutive of gender relations. Contributing to the book are Maureen Cain (University of West Indies), Yves Dezalay (Centre National de la Recherche Scientifique, France), Martha Fineman (Columbia University), Sue Lees (University of North London), Doreen McBarnet (Wolfson College, Oxford), Frank Munger (SUNY, Buffalo), Wilfried Scharf (University of Cape Town), Stuart Scheingold (University of Washington), David Sugarman (Lancaster University), and Sally Wheeler (University of Nottingham).

Book Kwa Mabinti

Download or read book Kwa Mabinti written by Purity and published by Xlibris Corporation. This book was released on 2017-01-06 with total page 184 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The book is an extremely honest letter to daughters, written by a mother. It is a story of her life and the memories and experiences she has had. She has not had the easiest life growing up, but faith and people strategically placed in her life helped her survive and encouraged her to tell her story. She talks of the feeling of being rejected, of never being able to measure up to the expectations of others, of sexual abuse as a child, of mourning, of bad decisions in her life, of porn addiction, and of a feeling of not being fully accepted by those around her. It is a story of anger and hurt, of feeling vulnerable and unprotected. It is a story about the brokenness of humanity showing how we fail over and over again, and it tells how God readily gives us a second and third chance. It is also a story of God's forgiveness, of learning to forgive others; it is a story of God's healing. The letter is written to encourage the daughters to live a life of faith, one that pleases God no matter the circumstances they find themselves in. A letter that encourages them to hold on to God even if those around them do not; a story that tells them that just because others say they are Christians does not mean they will not hurt them or let them down. It also reminds them that they too will fail sometimes, and it tells them of the importance of picking themselves up, forgiving themselves, seeking forgiveness from God, and walking on the narrow path. We are all still human, Christian or not, and we should focus on God and not those around us. Only God sees and judges the heart of man.

Book Tracey Richardson

Download or read book Tracey Richardson written by Tracey Richardson and published by Penguin Random House New Zealand Limited. This book was released on 2013-03-01 with total page 217 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Motivational autobiography of a morbidly obese mother of children with cystic fibrosis, who radically changed her life to become an Ironman competitor. Tracey Richardson has an inspirational and amazing story to tell — a story of success despite ongoing adversity and seemingly insurmountable odds, a story of how focus and passion can change lives. The continuous pressures of running a business and intensively caring for her two sick children, both of whom have the terminal genetic condition, cystic fibrosis, finally took its toll on Tracey. Morbidly obese and clinically depressed, she was overwhelmed by her children's increasing medical issues, feeling powerless to stop their ultimate course. At this low point, Tracey nearly opted out of life, but instead set about radically changing her life, embarking on a daunting physical and mental journey to find some value and purpose. Tracey’s two-year odyssey took her from 25 kilos overweight and feeling worthless and powerless about her life to training for and completing the gruelling Ironman New Zealand triathlon: a 3.8km swim, 180km cycle and 42km run. She then went on to compete at the world-famous Hawaii Ironman. Tracey did this while simultaneously raising the profile of cystic fibrosis. Tracey was selected by the Vodafone New Zealand Foundation as a 2004 winner of its ‘World of Difference’ programme. She was made a Member of the New Zealand Order of Merit (MNZM) in January 2005 ‘for services to persons with cystic fibrosis’. She is in demand as a professional speaker, inspiring and motivating everyone she comes in contact with.
