Book Speech Perception By Ear and Eye

Download or read book Speech Perception By Ear and Eye written by Dominic W. Massaro and published by Psychology Press. This book was released on 2014-02-25 with total page 368 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: First published in 1987. This book is about the processing of information. The central domain of interest is face-to-face communication in which the speaker makes available both audible and visible characteristics to the perceiver. Articulation by the speaker creates changes in atmospheric pressure for hearing and provides tongue, lip, jaw, and facial movements for seeing. These characteristics must be processed by the perceiver to recover the message conveyed by the speaker. The speaker and perceiver must share a language to make communication possible; some internal representation is necessarily functional for the perceiver to recover the message of the speaker. The current study integrates information-processing and psychophysical approaches in the analysis of speech perception by ear and eye.

Book Russian Literature and the Classics

Download or read book Russian Literature and the Classics written by Peter I. Barta and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2013-12-02 with total page 210 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Russian Literature and the Classics attempts to fill a gap. To date there has been no book-length, systematic study of the impact of antiquity on Russian literature and culture. While by no means claiming to offer a comprehensive approach, the authors focus on various aspects of the influence which the Classics have had on Russian literature at particularly significant junctures - the beginning of the nineteenth century; the age of the great Russian realist novel; the "Silver Age"; Stalin's terror; the "Thaw" after 1956; and the period just before the collapse of Soviet society. In their introductory essay the editors offer an overview of the Classical Tradition. In it, they provide an insight into the contrasting ways in which that tradition manifested itself in the literatures of Western Europe and of Russia.

Book The Address of the Eye

Download or read book The Address of the Eye written by Vivian Sobchack and published by Princeton University Press. This book was released on 2020-05-05 with total page 356 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Cinema is a sensuous object, but in our presence it becomes also a sensing, sensual, sense-making subject. Thus argues Vivian Sobchack as she challenges basic assumptions of current film theory that reduce film to an object of vision and the spectator to a victim of a deterministic cinematic apparatus. Maintaining that these premises ignore the material and cultural-historical situations of both the spectator and the film, the author makes the radical proposal that the cinematic experience depends on two "viewers" viewing: the spectator and the film, each existing as both subject and object of vision. Drawing on existential and semiotic phenomenology, and particularly on the work of Merleau-Ponty, Sobchack shows how the film experience provides empirical insight into the reversible, dialectical, and signifying nature of that embodied vision we each live daily as both "mine" and "another's." In this attempt to account for cinematic intelligibility and signification, the author explores the possibility of human choice and expressive freedom within the bounds of history and culture.

Traditional Tantra teaches methods of spiritual enlightenment-not sexual practices. In traditional Tantra sexuality and other types of sensuality are integrated into a whole-life approach to spirituality. But merely calling a practice or technique "Tantra" does not make it so. Traditional Tantra can only be learned from one who has studied and practiced in a line of enlightened Gurus. Brother William has been studying and practicing traditional Hindu Tantra since 1969 both in India and America, and since 1997, when he founded Ashram West, he has been teaching his adaptation of traditional Tantra for gay-identified persons, making intelligible the esoteric teachings of the ancient tradition.
