Book Home Life in Spain Classic Reprint

Download or read book Home Life in Spain Classic Reprint written by S. L. Bensusan and published by . This book was released on 2015-07-04 with total page 390 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Home Life in Spain My acquaintance with Spain dates back nearly twenty years. Since the first trip to Andalusia, taken on a tramp steamer that still fills a leading role when I suffer from nightmare, I have revisited the south half a dozen times and lived awhile in centre, north, and east. On several occasions holiday-making has provided the sole excuse for a visit, but I have acted as special correspondent to two daily papers, and this work gave me my first insight into the working of Spain's political machine. Of the fascination of the country and the charm of the people there is little set down in the following pages, not that it is possible to forget either, but because many pens have made the recital more tedious than a twice told tale. In the preparation of this volume I have relied for the most part upon memory and Charles Rudy. He it is who has set me right when memory tired or sought to play me false; in his pleasant company I still recall incidents of half-forgotten days and nights spent in the most fascinating country in Europe. Book The Spaniard in History Classic Reprint

Download or read book The Spaniard in History Classic Reprint written by James Champlin Fernald and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-02-04 with total page 152 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Spaniard in History But that something is wrong with Spain must be apparent, it would seem, even to her own people. How else should her once splendid, world-wide empire have so fallen into decay? N ow her possessions have dwindled to a frac tion of the Iber1an Peninsula and three muti nous colonies, one of which already lies under American guns. Spain herself has declined to the position of a fourth-rate European power, scarcely able to bolster up by ruinous loans her exhausted finances. Here are effects for which there is surely a cause. That cause 1s not in any desolating foreign invasion, and - must be in some qualities of the Spanish people. What are some at least, of those fateful traits, it is believed that this brief sketch will make evident. This book was released on 2015-07-17 with total page 498 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Land of the Dons IN writing the land OF the dons my aim has been to produce an intimate and trustworthy account of Spain and the Spaniards. I do not aspire to compete with the printed impressions of British or American tourists who pay a flying visit to a Spanish city or two, and scurry home ward reeking with inspiration. These are the most prolific and perceptive of authors; and doubtless many of them would volunteer to turn out in a fortnight what has occupied my close attention for a number of years. Of the Spanish words or phrases which figure in the text, many are explained, or explain them selves, upon the spot. A small glossary just before the index deals adequately, I think, with the remainder. Various of the illustrations are from my own negatives. Where this is not so the name of the photographer is always stated; and it should be understood that my thanks are due for courteous permission to reproduce. The English man, who cared something, after his fashion, for God, but not a jot for the Pope, entirely declined to acquiesce in this interpretation Of the divine decree. For many generations past the right Of mutual trade between England and the House of Burgundy had existed by treaties which had never been an nulled and as the Duchy of Burgundy, with the Netherlands, had been, since Charles the F ifth's accession, an appanage of the Spanish Crown, those treaties, our merchants argued, made them free also to trade with the Spanish colonies in America. Book Spain and the Spaniards Vol 2 of 2 Classic Reprint

Download or read book Spain and the Spaniards Vol 2 of 2 Classic Reprint written by Edmondo De Amicis and published by . This book was released on 2015-06-30 with total page 396 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Spain and the Spaniards, Vol. 2 of 2 As on arriving at Madrid by way of the north, so on leaving it by way of the south, one must pass through a desolate country that resembles the poorest provinces of Arragon and Old Castile. There are vast plains, parched and yellow, which look as though they would echo like a hollow passageway if one were to strike them, or crumble like the crust of a crisp tart. And through the plains are scattered a few wretched villages of the same color as the soil, which seem as though they would take fire like a pile of dry leaves if one were to touch a torch to the corner of one of the huts. After an hour of travel my shoulders sought the cushions of the carriage, my elbow sought for a support, my head sought my hand, and I fell into a deep sleep like a member of Leopardi's "Assembly of Listeners." A few minutes after I had closed my eyes I was rudely awakened by a desperate cry from the women and children, and leaped to my feet, demanding of my neighbors what had occurred. But before I had ended my question a general burst of laughter reassured me. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Spanish Dowry: A Romance As a child 1 had lived at home in a northern town, where it seemed to me that my father worked very hard, and did not make enough money to pay for my mother's frocks - at least, i used to hear some thing like that when my maternal grandmother came to see us. My father and i liked each other very much indeed; my sisters were at school; I never saw much of my mother, and i hated my grand mother. My misfortune came about when I was still a little chap. My father and l were both in a railway accident; he was but slightly hurt, and was taken home to recover; i, with one leg hopelessly injured, was taken to a hospital to lie long in pain. But it was my father who died and I who recovered. He had been dead for some months before they thought fit to tell me, and by that time our relatives had made a division of the family. My mother, with my sisters, went back to her parents' house, and my father's brother offered to adopt me. One day, in the hospital, the nurses put me in a little white room of? The big ward where i had hitherto been. They told me that I was going home. I had been up and about the ward in the afternoons for two or three days, learning to hop on my new crutch; and everybody had so praised my agility and admired my new crutch and new clothes that I felt very fine and perfectly happy. I fell asleep that day in the little white room, and next hearing my grandmother's hated voice, I lay still. I always kept as still as possible when with her, in order not to attract her notice.
