Book excerpt: Author turned amateur sleuth Paisley Sterling returns in a new mystery! When Paisley overhears two busybody gossips talking at the gym, little does she realize it's the beginning of a new mystery... "Do you really think he murdered her?" "I tell you, Crystal, she'd never been sick a day in her life! The woman was a walking, talking, medical miracle. Winston used to say if everyone in Rowan Springs were as healthy as Millicent Grazziani, he would have to hang his shingle out somewhere else." "But, murder, Agnes? Isn't that going a bit too far? Do you really think that puny little guy could get up enough gumption to kill somebody?" Crystal's laugh was rich and boisterous. "I remember when he was working as a hairdresser in Mildred's Beauty Box -- that's how he met Millicent in the first place -- he used to go to her house and do her hair twice a week. You could have knocked me over with a straw when he moved in with her. The story was that Millicent hated him. Used to tease him all the time. Called him ‘Willie the wimp.'" "People are funny," agreed Agnes. "Rich eccentric little old ladies included." "Well, there's nothing funny about being the sole heir to one rich, eccentric little old lady's estate. Especially when she kicks the bucket under suspicious circumstances..."

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Sow's Ear A Real English fire, albeit it was an Italian hearth - a shaded lamp throwing quaint shadows round the big room, so foreign in the sparseness of its furnishing - and two figures at the fireside - a little child in a pale blue night-wrapper, with bare pink feet, and a woman, whose fragile, youthful beauty was the more accentuated by her widow's weeds: such was the picture. A moment ago a tiny, dark-haired girl had been borne off in the nurse's arms, having brought a parrot-like formula of a prayer to an abrupt conclusion with a very genuine petition for chocolates. The concrete had this advantage over the abstract - chocolates the small Giselda understood, but to the best of her knowledge she had never tasted a "blessing" in her life, though she had prayed for one systematically night and morning for the best part of six years. But the little one left behind, rising from her brief devotions, stood dreamily gazing into the glowing coals, and spoke no word at all. Her companion watched her without stirring, perhaps deeming that a child's thoughts melt as snow under the hot breath of questioning; but there was love unspeakable, and a certain yearning wistfulness, in the eyes that rested upon the glory of auburn curls framing the earnest baby face. Suddenly the little creature turned, and met the look with something of the same expression, in a pair of eyes as blue as corn-flowers. Book The Independent Farmstead

Download or read book The Independent Farmstead written by Beth Dougherty and published by Chelsea Green Publishing. This book was released on 2016 with total page 338 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Twenty years ago, when authors Shawn and Beth Dougherty purchased the land they would come to name the Sow's Ear, the state of Ohio designated it "not suitable for agriculture." Today, their family raises and grows 90% of their own food. Such self-sufficiency is largely the result of basing their farming practices around intensive pasture management. Pioneered by such luminaries as Allan Savory, Greg Judy, and Joel Salatin, the tenets of holistic grazing -- employed mostly by larger-scale commercial operations -- have been adapted by the Doughertys to fit their family's needs. In The Independent Farmstead, The Sow's Ear model for regenerating the land and growing food --“the best you ever tasted” -- is elucidated for others to use and build upon. In witty and welcoming style, The Independent Farmstead covers everything from choosing a species of ruminant and incorporating it into a grass-based system to innovative electric fencing and watering systems, to what to do with all of the milk, meat, and, yes, manure that the self-sustaining farm produces.--COVER.

Book The Tunisian Crochet Handbook

Download or read book The Tunisian Crochet Handbook written by Toni Lipsey and published by Abrams. This book was released on 2021-12-07 with total page 180 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: From fiber artist Toni Lipsey of TL Yarn Craft, an introduction to the craft of Tunisian crochet—a unique crochet style that looks more like knitting—with 20 projects for beginners. There are hundreds of books that explore traditional crochet, but there are few that reference the concept of Tunisian crochet or present it in a modern, approachable way. The Tunisian Crochet Handbook introduces this fascinating and rewarding technique with a wide array of stitches and design possibilities. The goal of this book is to guide crocheters step-by-step through Tunisian crochet, starting with tools and yarns, transitioning into how-to’s and stitches, and finishing with easy but engaging patterns. Every shawl, garment, and accessory featured takes makers beyond the basics, introducing new stitches to expand their skill sets. In this way, author Toni Lipsey is reintroducing crochet and encouraging makers to explore the craft further with each new design. Crochet continues to grow in popularity, and this guidebook offers a new take on the timeless classic, one that readers won’t be able to find anywhere else. Includes instructional sections and patterns, complete with the necessary schematics and styled, chic photographs.

Book Quality Research in Literacy and Science Education

Download or read book Quality Research in Literacy and Science Education written by Mack C. Shelley and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2008-12-30 with total page 667 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Statistical models attempt to describe and quantify relationships between variables. In the models presented in this chapter, there is a response variable (sometimes called dependent variable) and at least one predictor variable (sometimes called independent or explanatory variable). When investigating a possible cause-and-effect type of relationship, the response variable is the putative effect and the predictors are the hypothesized causes. Typically, there is a main predictor variable of interest; other predictors in the model are called covariates. Unknown covariates or other independent variables not controlled in an experiment or analysis can affect the dependent or outcome variable and mislead the conclusions made from the inquiry (Bock, Velleman, & De Veaux, 2009). A p value (p) measures the statistical significance of the observed relationship; given the model, p is the probability that a relationship is seen by mere chance. The smaller the p value, the more confident we can be that the pattern seen in the data 2 is not random. In the type of models examined here, the R measures the prop- tion of the variation in the response variable that is explained by the predictors 2 specified in the model; if R is close to 1, then almost all the variation in the response variable has been explained. This measure is also known as the multiple correlation coefficient. Statistical studies can be grouped into two types: experimental and observational.
