Book The Structure of Strategic Revolution

Download or read book The Structure of Strategic Revolution written by James Joseph Schneider and published by Presidio Press. This book was released on 1994 with total page 362 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The national defense and security apparatus, internal and external, developed by the Soviet Union was unique in the history of the world. Soviet leaders created a warfare state that, taken in its totality, left no part of life in the Soviet Union untouched. Social, economic, artistic, industrial, politicalall aspects of Soviet society were affected. Professor Schneider shows how the Soviet security apparatus evolved and how the warfare state was achieved by Stalin. He offers important new insights into the strategic revolution of the nineteenth century that resulted from the Industrial Revolution, providing the technological means and industrial capacity for nations to wage total war. Ironically, the Soviet warfare state contained the seeds of its own destruction. Professor Schneider shows how the success of Stalin's "revolution from above", which resulted in the warfare state, created the conditions that ultimately made the historical achievement of Mikhail Gorbachev's reforms possible.

Book The Age of Total War 1860 1945

Download or read book The Age of Total War 1860 1945 written by Jeremy Black and published by Rowman & Littlefield Publishers. This book was released on 2010-09-16 with total page 217 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: What is total war? Definitions abound, but one thing is certain—the concept of total war has come to be seen as a defining concept of the modern age. In The Age of Total War, celebrated historian Jeremy Black explores the rise and demise of an era of total war, which he defines in terms of the intensity of the struggle, the range (geographical and/or chronological) of conflict, the nature of the goals, and the extent to which civil society was involved. He contends that this era (roughly 1860–1945) was markedly different from the warfare that characterized earlier periods, and that it is very different from the situation that has evolved since, with its emphasis on asymmetrical conflict and limited warfare. Acknowledging that various definitions are problematic and often contradictory, Black argues that 1860 to 1945 was an era in which the prospect of war and the consequences of it were crucially important for human history. He focuses primarily on conflict between Western powers, including Japanese participation in the Russo-Japanese War. Trends and developments subsequent to 1945 have combined, Black asserts, to make a return to total war unlikely.

Book Nazi Policy on the Eastern Front 1941

Download or read book Nazi Policy on the Eastern Front 1941 written by Alex J. Kay and published by University Rochester Press. This book was released on 2012 with total page 371 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Nazi Germany's invasion of the Soviet Union in June 1941 and events on the Eastern Front that same year were pivotal to the history of World War II. It was during this year that the radicalization of Nazi policy -- through both an all-encompassing approach to warfare and the application of genocidal practices -- became most obvious. Germany's military aggression and overtly ideological conduct, culminating in genocide against Soviet Jewry and the decimation of the Soviet population through planned starvation and brutal antipartisan policies, distinguished Operation Barbarossa-the code name for the German invasion of the Soviet Union-from all previous military campaigns in modern European history. This collection of essays, written by young scholars of seven different nationalities, provides readers with the most current interpretations of Germany's military, economic, racial, and diplomatic policies in 1941. With its breadth and its thematic focus on total war, genocide, and radicalization, this volume fills a considerable gap in English-language literature on Germany's war of annihilation against the Soviet Union and the radicalization of World War II during this critical year. Alex J. Kay is the author of Exploitation, Resettlement, Mass Murder: Political and Economic Planning for German Occupation Policy in the Soviet Union, 1940-1941 and is an independent contractor for the Ludwig Boltzmann Institute for Research on War Consequences. Jeff Rutherford is assistant professor of history at Wheeling Jesuit University, where he teaches modern European history. David Stahel is the author of Operation Barbarossa and Germany's Defeat in the East and Kiev 1941: Hitler's Battle for Supremacy in the East.

Book Total War

  • Pages : 360 pages

Download or read book Total War written by Michael Jones and published by John Murray. This book was released on 2011-06-09 with total page 360 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In February 1943, German forces surrendered to the Red Army at Stalingrad and the tide of war turned. By May 1945 Soviet soldiers had stormed Berlin and brought down Hitler's regime. Total War follows the fortunes of these fighters as they liberated Russia and the Ukraine from the Nazi invader and fought their way into the heart of the Reich. It reveals the horrors they experienced - the Holocaust, genocide and the mass murder of Soviet POWs - and shows the Red Army, brutalized by war, taking its terrible revenge on the German civilian population. For the first time Russian veterans are candid about the terrible atrocities their own army committed. But they also describe their struggle to raise themselves from the abyss of hatred. Their war against the Nazis - which in large part brought the Second World War in Europe to an end - is a tarnished but deeply moving story of sacrifice and redemption.
