Book The Southern States Vol 2 Classic Reprint

Download or read book The Southern States Vol 2 Classic Reprint written by and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-12-10 with total page 676 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Southern States, Vol. 2 The Northern farmer is enterprising. He raises fruits and vegetables and engages in dairying and kindred enter prises because he has a home market for these things. The Southern farmer had none and could not create one. He might deplore his enforced idleness when he saw his family in want, but that would not bring him buyers for his eggs or chickens or fruit when there was no one in his section to consume them. The almost unlimited amount of work for the mechanics and day laborers generally at the North enabled every man to find something to do. In the South there was almost an entire absence of work of this character. Men hung around the village stores because there was no work to be had which would yield them any returns. With the development of manufactures there came a great change. The opportunity for work had come, and the way in which the people who had hitherto been idlers rushed to the factories, the fur naces, and wherever employment could be secured demonstrated that they only needed the chance to prove their energy. The greatest blessing that industrial activity has brought to the South is that it is daily creating new work for thousands of hitherto idle hands, and creating a home market wherever a furnace or a factory is started for the diversified products of the farm. The latent energy of the people has been stimulated into activity, and the whole South is at work. But to fully understand the South in its relation to business matters, it is necessary to study its business history before the war had brought about a degree of poverty which has no equal in modern history. This book was released on 2016-07-17 with total page 632 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The South in the Building of the Nation, Vol. 2 of 12: A History of the Southern States Designed to Record the South's Part in the Making of the American Nation In the year 1524 Giovanni Verrazano, a native of Florence, Italy, was sent across the Atlantic by Francis of France. Verrazano reached the American coast at a point near the mouth of the Cape Fear River, North Carolina. He coasted thence southward fifty leagues in search of a harbor. This voyage, of course, brought him to the region now known as South Carolina. The whole shore, runs Verrazano's description of the country, is covered with fine sand about fifteen feet thick, rising in the form of little hills about fifteen paces broad. Ascending farther, we found several arms of the sea, which make in through inlets, washing the shores on both sides as the coast runs. He speaks, also, of immense forests of trees, more or less dense, too various in color and too delightful and charming in appearance to be described. They are adorned with palms, laurels, cypresses and other varieties unknown to Europe, that send forth the sweetest fragrance to a great distance. His technical scholarship was recognized by his colleagues in English throughout the United States; his teaching quality attested by students who had been resorting to him in increasing numbers for more than twenty years; his power to please as well as instruct the general public evidenced by numerous calls to lecture at Chautauqua, in Colorado, at Monteagle, and elsewhere; and he was just finding his widest audience through his literary sketches and studies, and awakening in good judges the conviction that he was to be the historian of the intellectual movement called Southern Literature. William Malone Baskervill, son of Rev. John Baskervill and his wife, Elizabeth Malone, was born in Fayette County, Tenn., April 1, 1850. It should also be remembered that these reports must be complete and therefore it is essential that particular attention be given to them. Tasistro and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-09-16 with total page 246 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Random Shots and Southern Breezes, Containing Critical Remarks on the Southern States and Southern Institutions, Vol. 2 of 2: With Semi-Serious Observations on Men and Manners In the course of my visits to the residence of this hospitable gentleman, I had frequent Opportunities to observe the treatment of slaves; and, without undertaking a vindication of the character of the planters, I may be at liberty to say, that experience and observation have convinced me that they have been most grossly misrepresented on this subject. I am not disposed to go so far as Mrs. Carmichael, in attributing to them a galaxy of virtues such as could only be found in the fabled Arcadia; but I am disposed to go as far as that lady in refuting the imputations of immorality and cruelty which have so frequently been brought against them. The treatment which the negroes receive on the estates of Monsieur Pititititit reflects the highest credit on the humanity of their master. To say that they are under-worked, and over-fed, and far happier than the labourers of Great Britain, would hardly convey a sufficiently clear notion of their actual condition. They put me much more in mind of a community of grown-up children, spoiled by too much kindness, than of a body of dependants, much less a company of slaves. I conversed with them at different times, and on every topic connected with their situation; and I not only found them extremely contented with their lot, but generally disposed to reject the boon of freedom, should it be offered them. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Southern Review, Vol. 2: August and November, 1828 His earliest publications were remarkable for their vivacity, their graphic delineations of persons and of character, their racy humour, the delicacy and truth of their reflections, and the freedom, yet correctness of their style. His later productions have, we think, lost in case and vigour, all that they have gained in the more polished structure of their sentences and in the works published since his residence in Europe, there is, appa tautly, more restraint, more effort to be correct, and, couse quently, more tameness, than in thofi of his earlier years. He no longer laughs with the hearty and cordial glee of inborn cheerfulness. In his later works, it is only when he reverts to his native land, to the scenes of his youth, to the traditions which beguiled and enkindled his awakening imagination, that we can discover the felicitous graces of his earlier writings, and the charms of his playful and interesting narratives.
