Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Southern Planter, Vol. 69: Devoted to Practical and Progressive Agriculture, Horticulture, Trucking, Live Stock and the Fireside; April, 1908 Discussing this subject a few years ago with Professor Newman, of the South Carolina Experiment Station, he told us that in order to demonstrate the truth of the extent to which corn roots would extend to some doubting South Carolina farmers, he had had a corn plant which had grown in well prepared land washed out of the soil by a hose and strong stream of water so as not to break oh any of the roots and rootlets. After hours of working in following the roots to the extremity of their growth, the plant, with all its roots and fibres, was got out of the soil and the roots spread out on a canvass sheet and 'dried. It was then seen that the plant had a root system so large that the canvass, when stretched out in the lecture' room of the College, covered the whole of One side of the room. The capacity of such a root system to extract food from the soil could then be well understood and it became possible to realize that even if the soil was not over-rich such a plant could, when given the Opportunity by proper preparation of the soil, make a good yield of corn, and that if properly supplied with addi tional plant food, a heavy growth of stalks could make almost an unthought of yield of corn. It was such a crop as this, grown under these conditions in South Carolina. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Southern Planter, Vol. 69: Devoted to Practical and Progressive Agriculture, Horticulture, Trucking, Live Stock and the Fireside; September, 1908 There is still complaint of the scarcity of labor, though nearly all the farmers are using more labor than they need if they would use better implements. On.'the beau tiful level flats near the Roanoke river. On the Norfolk line of the Atlantic Coast Line, I saw in one field five men with five mules, each pulling a turning plow, going four times in a row banking up the soil to the cotton, and of course damaging the roots, while a single pair of mules, driven by one hand riding on a two-row cultivator, would have done as much work' as the five, and would have done it better for the crop. Far keep up, though there is not that active and brisk demand so observable a year ii ago. People out of work and working short time in the North and -east are not the good customers they were when in full work a year ago, and this cannot fail to have its effect on prices. The cabbage crop, of which about thirteen per cent. Of the crop of the country is grown in Tidewater Virginia and Western North Carolina, has been a good one, the condition being above the average. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Southern Planter, Vol. 69: A Monthly Journal Devoted to Practical and Progressive Agriculture, Horticulture, Trucking, Live Stock and the Fireside; August, 1908 What a tremendous addition to our resources it would make if the full potential nutritive power of the corn plant' were obtained on our farms. But does this sug gestion smack of a Utopian ideal which we can never hope to reach? Not at all, because the intelligence of the American farmer is developing apace, and the time is not far distant when many exceedingly wasteful forms of practice which now find favor will pass into disuse. On thousands of farms corn stover is never harvested. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Southern Planter, Vol. 69: A Monthly Journal Devoted to Practical and Progressive Agriculture, Horticulture, Trucking, Live Stock and the Fireside; May 1908 The peanut crop should be planted about from the middle to the end of the month. In our last issue we gave advice as to the preparation of the land and the fertilizer proper to be used to make the crop successfully. Mix the fertilizer well with the soil before planting the nuts. The seed may be planted in either rows or hills, but the most usual way is to plant in rows three feet apart and the plants 12 or 15 inches apart in the rows. Cultivation should be frequent to keep all weeds down' and a loose' soil'mulch on the ground. Keep the land level. Experiments have shown that level cultivation gives the best crops. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Southern Planter, Vol. 69: A Monthly Journal Devoted to Practical and Progressive Agriculture, Horticulture, Trucking, Live Stock and the Fireside; March, 1908 Do not. Sow Canada peas and oats for a forage crop later than the middle of this month in middle or Eastern Virginia. The hot weather will come too soon to permit of the crop making a success. In the Western and North ern part of the State the crop may be seeded up to the end of the month. Dwarf Essex rape should be seeded this month for a grazing crop for sheep and hogs. This is a quick growing crop and, with a favorable season, will be ready to graze in six weeks or two months from time of seeding. The land should be finely prepared, as the seed is very small and should be rolled after sowing, if dry enough to roll without packing on the roller: Sow about three or four pounds of seed per acre broadcast. The feeding value of this crop for sheep, lambs and hogs is great and, with some corn fed with it, quick and profitable returns are made. If wanted to be grazed very quickly, it is better sown in drills two feet six inches apart and cultivated two or three times.
