This book was released on 2015-07-07 with total page 534 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The South in the Building of the Nation, Vol. 8 of 12 The selections from the writings of Southern novelists and story-writers found in this volume have an absolute value from the standpoint of pure fiction. In some cases short stories have been given in full, while the selections from novels have an inherent interest independent of the complete stories. They serve also as an interpretation of various phases of Southern life; for this reason, longer selections have been made from Kennedy's Swallow Barn and Baldwin's Flush Times in Alabama and Mississippi than would otherwise have been given. Furthermore, a certain unity may be seen in the volume in that it suggests the main tendencies of Southern fiction and the characteristics of some distinct groups of writers. If there should seem to be an undue proportion of ante-bellum fiction, it must be borne in mind that the earlier writings are inaccessible to the general reader, either because they are now out of print or are found only in expensive editions. A sufficient reason for the absence of some recent writings is that the publishers have in some cases refused the right to use selections, and in other cases have limited the publishers of this volume to very fragmentary selections. It is particularly to be regretted that for this reason selections could not be given from Richard Malcolm Johnston and Mr. James Lane Allen, though there is some compensation in the case of the latter in the admirable study by the late Professor John Bell Henneman. In addition, others have been included as of a representative or typical nature. The limitations of space forbid the treatment of all important per sons, hence the Omission of some individuals rather prominent, especially in recent times. The average man of ability in the year 1800 exercised a stronger shaping in uence than a man of the same qualities in 1900. Consequently fuller treatment is given the early leaders. The value of the work then is in its accuracy and in the sympathetic point of View of the writers, in the adequacy of treatment and in the completion of the general history by this biographical history of the South, a section where character, personality and individuality have always counted for so much. There is no better source of inspiration than the characters and achievements of these Southern men and women, who were the best products of the South, the rich fruitage of the Southern civilization. This book was released on 2017-12-03 with total page 630 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The South in the Building of the Nation, Vol. 2 of 12: A History of the Southern States Designed to Record the South's Part in the Making of the American Nation In the year 1524 Giovanni Verrazano, a native of Florence, Italy, was sent across the Atlantic by Francis I., of France. Verrazano reached the American coast at a point near the mouth of the Cape Fear River, North Carolina. He coasted thence southward fifty leagues in search of a harbor. This voyage, of course, brought him to the region now known as South Carolina. The whole shore, runs Verrazano's description of the country, is covered with fine sand about-fifteen feet thick, rising in the form of little hills about fifteen paces broad. Ascending farther, we found several arms of the sea, which make in through inlets, washing the shores on both sides as the coast runs. He speaks, also, of immense forests of trees, more or less dense, too various in color and too delightful and charming in appearance to be described. They are adorned with palms, laurels, cypresses and other varieties unknown to Europe, that send forth the sweetest fragrance to a great distance. This book was released on 2015-07-02 with total page 738 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The South in the Building of the Nation, Vol. 6 Economically as well as politically the South was prostrate when her armies surrendered in 1865. For the next ten years, or during the Reconstruction period, the conditions which existed prevented or hindered normal recovery from the effects of war. Before the war the South was a distinct economic region with problems and conditions unlike those of the free states. This condition was generally considered one of the results of slavery, but the abolition of the slave-labor system failed to change radically the economic peculiarities of the South. In 1865 industrial society scarcely existed in the South. The great loss of life and health by the whites in the war, the destruction of the slave-labor system, the suffering and destitution which existed during the last years of the war and for several years after the surrender, the destruction of property during the war, the loss of capital, the bankruptcy of the state and local governments all these unfavorable conditions bore heavily upon the desolated country. Public property was, for the most part destroyed or confiscated because it had been used by the Confederate government. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: NATIONAL BESTSELLER • NATIONAL BOOK AWARD FINALIST • An "extraordinary ... profoundly moving" history (The New York Times Book Review) of the American Civil War that reveals the ways that death on such a scale changed not only individual lives but the life of the nation. An estiated 750,000 soldiers lost their lives in the American Civil War. An equivalent proportion of today's population would be seven and a half million. In This Republic of Suffering, Drew Gilpin Faust describes how the survivors managed on a practical level and how a deeply religious culture struggled to reconcile the unprecedented carnage with its belief in a benevolent God. Throughout, the voices of soldiers and their families, of statesmen, generals, preachers, poets, surgeons, nurses, northerners and southerners come together to give us a vivid understanding of the Civil War's most fundamental and widely shared reality. With a new introduction by the author, and a new foreword by Mike Mullen, 17th Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff.

Book John Bell Hood and the Fight for Civil War Memory

Download or read book John Bell Hood and the Fight for Civil War Memory written by Brian Craig Miller and published by Univ. of Tennessee Press. This book was released on 2010 with total page 346 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "In this first biography of the general in more than twenty years, Miller offers a new original perspective, directly challenging those historians who have pointed to Hood's perceived personality flaws, his alleged abuse of painkillers, and other unsubstantiated claims as proof of his incompetence as a military leader. This book takes into account Hood's entire life -- as a student at West Point, his meteoric rise and fall as a soldier and Civil War commander, and his career as a successful postwar businessman. In many ways, Hood represents a typical southern man, consumed by personal and societal definitions of manhood that were threatened by amputation and preserved and reconstructed by Civil War memory. Miller consults an extensive variety of sources, explaining not only what Hood did but also the environment in which he lived and how it affected him"--Jacket.

Book Nation and Its Modes of Oppressions in South Asia

Download or read book Nation and Its Modes of Oppressions in South Asia written by Sajal Nag and published by Taylor & Francis. This book was released on 2022-12-30 with total page 306 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume examines nationhood as a concept and how it became the basis of political discourse in South Asia. It studies the emergence of nationalism in modern states as a powerful, omnipotent, and omnipresent form of political identity in the nineteenth and twentieth centuries. This book examines the idea of a nation, as it originated in medieval Europe, as an unending process of 'othering' individuals, groups, and communities to establish its hegemony, exclusivity, and absolute power within a political discourse. It sheds light on how these new political frameworks in the name of nationalism resulted in conflicts and bloodshed. It unleashed politics of retribution and facilitated majoritarianism, minority persecution, and collective authoritarianism which devastated individuals and collectivities. Further, the author also discusses various prominent ideas and contemporary theories on nationalism alongside pivotal socio-cultural factors which have significantly shaped the formation of modern nation states and their politics. Topical and nuanced, this book will be indispensable to researchers, scholars, and readers interested in nationalism, political science, modern history, political theory, political philosophy, political sociology, political history, post-colonial studies, and South Asia studies.
