Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: We ask much of our leaders and blame them for ay failure to order the world to our liking. Yet many of us are reluctant to engage, preferring to disparage leaders as a class apart, a quarrelsome lot and overpaid to boot-the useful butt of barbecue humour. Will we engage better with the next generation of leaders? Will they conduct a kinder, gentler national conversation? In this book, 36 Australian voices-both early achievers and the venerable from across the political and social landscape-offer fresh ideas and timeless wisdom for people entering public life. Whether you are a budding politician, advisor, lobbyist, advocate, local councillor, NGO leader, social activist, blogger, philanthropist, sporting administrator or the representative of an industry, the arts, a profession or a trade-you are in public life. This book will deepen your understanding of what you must know, do, say and be to succeed. "... Philip Crisp has done us all an enormous favour by assembling not only a first class and diverse group of leaders, but ones who are willing to be frank, confronting and not merely offering the usual 'leadership' platitudes." - Simon McKeon AO: Australian of the Year 2011 "... a 'must read' for any aspiring leader... a treasure trove of invaluable insights into effective leadership." - Laurie Wilson: President, National Press Club "... a most timely and comprehensive analysis of leadership and the making of good leaders... Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Was Mounted Constable William Willshire really the cold-blooded killer of 'literally thousands' of Aboriginal people in Central Australia? Or was he the first white man to write a love poem to an Aboriginal woman? Was he both? Did the Finke River missionaries imprison and beat their recalcitrant converts, or did they mark out a future path for a people abandoned by South Australian society? Did the mission connive at the murder of the men who opposed them? Did they really convert anyone to Lutheran Christianity? And what did the people and governments of South Australia know and care about their northern frontier? Could a policeman be hanged for murder? This book goes beyond the stereotypes to answer these questions. It brings back to life some remarkable people.

Book Challenging Knowledge Sex and Power

Download or read book Challenging Knowledge Sex and Power written by Julie E. Mills and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2013-07-18 with total page 206 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Women in the developed world expect to work in the labour force over the course of their lives. On finishing school more girls are entering universities and undertaking professional training for careers than ever before. Males and females enter many high status professions in roughly equal numbers. However, engineering stands out as a profession that remains obstinately male dominated. Despite efforts to change, little progress has been made in attracting and retaining women in engineering. This book analyses the outcomes of a decade-long investigation into this phenomenon, framed by two questions: Why are there so few women in engineering? And why is this so difficult to change? The study includes data from two major surveys, accounts from female engineers in a range of locations and engineering fields, and case studies of three large engineering corporations. The authors explore the history and politics of several organisations related to women in engineering, and conclude with an analysis of a range of campaigns that have been waged to address the issue of women’s minority status in engineering. Challenging Knowledge, Sex and Power will be of great interest to students of feminist economics, and is also relevant to researchers in women’s studies and engineering education.

Book Dementia is Different

Download or read book Dementia is Different written by Ludomyr Mykyta and published by Australian Scholarly Publishing. This book was released on 2019-09-06 with total page 288 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The conventional way that dementia is evaluated and managed is one-dimensional and outdated. We are fixated on identifying a cause, when we should be identifying the consequences. We use tests when we should be seeing and talking to people. Drawing from his long career in geriatric medicine, Dr Ludomyr Mykyta critiques the state of dementia treatment and care in Australia, highlighting the discrimination faced by our ageing residents. People suffering from dementia need continued high-quality health care from diagnosis until the end of life. Stable relationships and wellness are the prerequisites for quality of life. In countries like ours, this is the era of chronic illness of which dementia is the epitome. The seeming epidemic of dementia comes with the ageing of the population, which was predictable for generations and for which successive governments failed to prepare. What now passes for aged care in Australia is a travesty where the glowing reform rhetoric obfuscates the grim reality.
