Book The Sounds and Inflections of the Greek Dialects

Download or read book The Sounds and Inflections of the Greek Dialects written by Herbert Weir Smyth and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2016-10-10 with total page 744 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Sounds and Inflections of the Greek Dialects: Ionic The present work attempts to combine the two methods by which dialectal phenomena may be studied - the philological and the linguistic. Primary importance has been attached to the point of view of Philology, which seeks, among other things, to determine on the basis of tradition the forms proper to the dialect of each author, the place occupied by him in the history of the development of the dialect, the interrelation of the various connected styles of literary composition, and the connection between the language of artistic construction and the language of the public and private documents preserved in the inscriptions. So far as Ionic is concerned, these matters have been discussed brie y in the Introduction, but the conclusions there presented can be fully understood only by comparison with the detailed investigation that follows. I have deferred to another occasion a sketch of ancient dialectology a discussion of the inter relation of the chief canton a1 idioms, and an examination of the principles that govern their appearance in a literature permeated to a remarkable degree by artistic consciousness. Book Studies in Ancient Greek Dialects

Download or read book Studies in Ancient Greek Dialects written by Georgios K. Giannakis and published by Walter de Gruyter GmbH & Co KG. This book was released on 2017-12-18 with total page 618 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A new collective volume with over twenty important studies on less well-studied dialects of ancient Greek, particularly of the northern regions. The book covers geographically a broad area of the classical Greek world ranging from Central Greece to the overseas Greek colonies of Thrace and the Black Sea. Particular emphasis is placed on the epichoric varieties of areas on the northern fringe of the classical Greek world, including Thessaly, Epirus and Macedonia. Recent advances in research are taken into consideration in providing state-of-the art accounts of these understudied dialects, but also of more well-known dialects like Lesbian. In addition, other papers address special intriguing topics in these, but also in other dialects, such as Thessalian, Lesbian and Ionic, or focus on important multi-dialectal corpora such as the oracular tablets from Dodona. Finally, a number of studies examine broader topics like the supraregional Doric koinai or the concept of dialect continuum, or even explore the possibility of an ancient Balkansprachbund, which included Greek too. This new reference work covers a gap in current research and will be indispensable for people interested in Greek dialectology and ancient Greek in general.

Book The Greek Dialects

Download or read book The Greek Dialects written by Carl D. Buck and published by Bristol Classical Press. This book was released on 1998-03-26 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Part of the Advanced Language Series, this is a revised edition of "The Greek Dialects" published by Chicago University Press in 1955. Its virtues were comparative clarity and conciseness on a subject too often treated, for example by contemporary work in German, with prolixity and obscurity. It became the standard scholarly introduction and reference work on questions of dialect; and though much valuable additional work has been done on the subject since its appearance, it largely retains its original virtues and still provides a valuable starting point of reference. The Advanced Language Series reissues important books on Greek and Latin Language (and associated areas) which have been unavailable for some time or have not previously appeared in readily affordable paperback format. They are intended for the reference shelves of all scholars and students of classical languages.

Book Ancient Greek Dialects and Early Authors

Download or read book Ancient Greek Dialects and Early Authors written by D. Gary Miller and published by Walter de Gruyter. This book was released on 2013-12-12 with total page 476 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Epic is dialectally mixed but Ionic at its core. The proper dialect for elegy was Ionic, even when composed by Tyrtaeus in Sparta or Theognis in Megara, both Doric areas. Choral lyric poets represent the major dialect areas: Aeolic (Sappho, Alcaeus), Ionic (Anacreon, Archilochus, Simonides), and Doric (Alcman, Ibycus, Stesichorus, Pindar). Most distinctive are the Aeolic poets. The rest may have a preference for their own dialect (some more than others) but in their Lesbian veneer and mixture of Doric and Ionic forms are to some extent dialectally indistinguishable. All of the ancient authors use a literary language that is artificial from the point of view of any individual dialect. Homer has the most forms that occur in no actual dialect. In this volume, by means of dialectally and chronologically arranged illustrative texts, translated and provided with running commentary, some of the early Greek authors are compared against epigraphic records, where available, from the same period and locality in order to provide an appreciation of: the internal history of the Ancient Greek language and its dialects; the evolution of the multilectal, artificial poetic language that characterizes the main genres of the most ancient Greek literature, especially Homer / epic, with notes on choral lyric and even the literary language of the prose historian Herodotus; the formulaic properties of ancient poetry, especially epic genres; the development of more complex meters, colometric structure, and poetic conventions; and the basis for decisions about text editing and the selection of a manuscript alternant or emendation that was plausibly used by a given author.
